I have to agree with Rockit's post here. The rules for Deep Strike are unusually clear in that the central model is placed and scatter determined before the rest of the unit is put down.

Since you don't put any models beyond the first down until the scatter is determined it would be impossible to place the whole unit then measure from the edge of the outermost model and claim "I don't scatter because Demon #9 here is within 6" of the icon". It just doesn't work that way according to the rules for Deep Strike.

Now can you pre-measure the 6" to make sure your central model is within it? I dunno. On the one hand, it seem reasonable especially when compared to deploying from vehicles as previously noted. On the other hand in a game where a large degree of guesstimation is required it might not be the intent to premeasure, especially given the wording in the various Codexes.

I welcome an INAT FAQ ruling on the subject.

Come on people if you can't eyeball 6" there's some thing wrong with you. For me it slightly less then the distance between my index finger and my thumb when spread.
