This works wonderfully if everyone in your group is actively working to finish their painting, but at least one of my buddies is a perennial non-painter and always downs on suggestions like this (even when they're in the game rules directly e.g. BFG, unpainted ships are at -1 Leadership).

There should be more rules for this. Stop my lazy mate from driving around with his two poorly painted eBay desert-scheme bassies, his even more poorly painted eBay mars leman russ, and the rest of his army is pure grey or black.
He has painted nothing, in 2 years of collecting his army.

Rule 1 would mean a lot of re-rolls (unless you roll in box).
But there is a disadvantage to rule 2. Someone may make a ridiculous argument and bide for time until that 1min is up, and then have a chance of an absolutley unfair rule being played to their advantage.

So your either an alcoholic 40k champion or a broke 40k loser!
Our house rule is have fun. If rules get in the way of everyone (not just one) having a good game then it is usually overlooked.
A secondary house rule would be BYO, but that is universal, not just 40k.

Heres one we came up with:
"Models in Terminator (or equivalent) armour have the ability to run through walls. Place the flame template at the point that each terminator hits the wall, in the direction the terminator is running, to represent the shrapnel spray. Any models touched by the template take a S2, Ap- hit, cover/armor saves allowed. Roll a difficult terrain test: on a 1, the terminator / his unit become pinned"

hmmm, interesting but it wouldn't be reserved for just termies would it? It would probably include all kinds of monstrous creatures/ walkers and some stronger infantry right?

In my old gaming group, we had an optional house rule that allowed you to take the more advantageous result of a cocked die/dice as long as you stated in a clear voice:
"I'll take the cock."

My favorite house rule is a reroll of dice that bounce off the table. I don't like the idea that wayward dice always fail the roll. For a cocked dice, i usually count the result if you ban balance another dice on the preferred side. Although that rule is imaginative.

I love this idea, however I would be so tempted to paint my terminators all red and a big smiley face on their chest and shout out " OH YEAH!" whenever I do this.
or immplementing that how about anything on that size base wiith a 3+ or up armour save? or maybe anything with the relentless special rule.

Some things at ours - mostly limitations, not rules.
1) Self-generating cover saves don't exist. If you attempt it, neither unit gets a cover save.
2) Master of Ordnance can't have a Mortar in his unit spot for him.
3) Dice off table or cocked in any way are re-rolled. Dropped dice are re-rolled.
And we don't usually have a painting requirement, but right now I'm running a campaign where only painted models can be used. Those who really wanted the motivation to paint have joined. Those who don't, didn't. It's working out great.

I played a small campain-game like that, though we also allowed it for every unit as well. IE-each model fired independently. Of course we also alternated moving and firing and an number of other major changes, so it's not exactly a clear use of it.

I agree with Willy. house rules are for clarifications and increasing play ability, not for changing fundamentals of the game. The biggest house rule I employ is that if a model looks good, even if it isn't GW, then it can be played as long as it is WYSIWYG.

That renders alot of vehicle upgrades and abilities useless or lesser. Tau Target Locks for instance.

wow!... loads of great ideas!
here's a few I use quite often:
Buildings of 2 storeys or more can topple and collapse when destroyed, the height of the biulding is halved, and then a scatter dice is rolled.. this is where the 'shadow' of the debris falls.. models are hit with a base strength 3 hit, and plus 2 for each storey above the 2nd. Eg a 3 storey biulding which is 9" falls 4.5" and causes strength 5 hits.
I use a similar strength of wound system for models that fall (or fail their initiative when jumping across a 2 or 3" gap) from buildings.
exploding barrels are great, and rolling barrels is fun too.. shoot a pile of barrels and send all the others scattering, we use a small blast marker and strength 3.
momentum... vehicles which travelled over 12" continue moving d6" in the same direction in the turn they were shot, models aren't tank shocked as its not really a threat. (we add d6" for every 6" over 12", so 18" = 2d6", 24" = 3d6")
Jumping vehicles... models moving over 12" can jump if the scenery is appropriate.. this is quite vague as we only really play it for fun... and its great fun!! - landing requires a leadership, and dismounting and landing in close combat requires a leadership, but gives and extra attack!!
Blast markers and intervening scenery... as blast markers have a bit of an advantage when shooting at models in cover, especially if there are several bits of cover in the way (this comes up most when shots go through several windows or doorways) ... the targeted unit gets 1 cover save per window / biulding the shot passes through. If the unit passes a cover save, then the shot explodes on the appropriate biulding... this we sometimes use for heavy weapons like krak missiles and lascannons etc to represent the level of damage they can cause to scenery.
cool.. I think that's the most of them.. if I remember more I'll post them.
