I'm always hoping for a remake of the Dune movie. Preferably one that doesn't suck colossal Harkonnen dong.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

Having surgery on my ears at the age of 6.
It restored around 80% of my hearing.
I was a really quiet kid when I was young (small wonder, I couldn't hear much of the world).
Meeting and falling in love with my girlfriend (and now wife) and then getting married after a rough 12 years.
These are the key moments so far.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
That is not dead which can eternal lie ...
... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

Some other key points that have defined my life so far:
1.Going to uni. I met (and still have) some of the greatest friends I'm ever likely to find. Actually I met some other great guys at high school, but who cares, I have great friends.
2.Moving to China. I met my wife here and it has absolutely defined the person I have become (she has taught me a hell of a lot about growing up).
My previous post kind of defined the type of boy I was (shy, sensitive and quiet).

She didn't say she wasn't asian, it sounds like an uncomfortable situation either way though.

One of my recent "life-defining" moments was realising or becoming an atheist (depending on how you want to look at it).
I've never been very religious but still had the basic underlying Christian beliefs. It sort of shook up how I viewed some things and answered the question I used to have about why so many atheists seem to be obsessed with religion.
There are other, greater and more personal things but I'll keep those to myself right now. Suffice to say, I can empathise with a number of people in this thread to some degree.

I'm still working on it. Maybe I'll have a better answer in 70 years or so, assuming I'm still alive then, but I'm not holding my breath. I'm not in a particular hurry to do much defining, but I certainly don't try to avoid redefining it, when I feel it's necessary.
If that makes sense.

The first time I decided I unconditionaly hated my older brother, but loved my oldest was definately a big moment in my life. (Third of 3 boys.) Everyday I get the same lecture "when we're gone you'll only have each other. I hope you'll be friends then". If he wasn't such a f*ckin nutcase maybe we would be. As for now, he constantly demands things of my parents and has a real control issue. And somehow, he's popular, even after his friends see him treat my parents and me like dirt. And somehow, I'm the crazy one? WTF!?
Now with the oldest, I wish I could be like him. He's strong, not just physically. His girlfriend got pregnant when he turned 21, and he really stepped up. He is traing in the Border Patrol, and is a pretty good father. I'd be happy being 1/36th as strong as him.

The day I started lying. You'd be surprised how much fun you can have just by making someone think you're someone else. Like I am not a 15 yr old loner, but rather Matt Sinclare, a short 22 yr old who has a penchant for crashing parties.

The day the main character of a novel series I am working on came to me, a moment of clarity if you will.
Certainly never seen anything like the character anywhere before, and believe me I've now looked on a almost paranoid level since.
Sadly still writing the first four novels and planning the following eight, its going to be a long journey.
The most important day however is a sad one, the day my wife and I lost our first child, our daughter.
It totally focused our relationship, after a troubled five years, the baby was something my wife feared, felt she'd be an awful mother.
When we held the dying child, it was an early birth, but long enough she had to deliver it normally. We both knew we wanted to be together. We married two months after the funeral and my wife knew she wanted more kids from that day as well.
Had our second and eldest Son a year later, and have since had another boy, planning for two more as well, once the youngest gets to school age.
Oh and I must note, this isn't some kind of twisted sympathy bid. When I needed sympathy I couldn't talk about her, not even to close friends.
Its been seven years however and I can now talk about her even to those I don't really know.
The key thing for me is without a single doubt my first published novel will be dedicated to her.

Defining moment? Probably when my 'Freinds' decided to kick me out of their lives. I knew I could be an ass sometimes, but I was really trying to change! I guess they just thought I wasn't 'cool' enough, as I am the only person in my year who hasn't had a gf. That taught me a lot about the world.
It also kick-started something else, but that's very personal (And no, its nothing to do with Girls or 'love')
Your stories are interesting guys, I really do feel sorry for some of you (And thats rare for me)

Some powerful, and entertaining, posts here. I guess I can probably narrow down my list to two.
1: After finishing college I fell into a full-time job at my local DIY store. Worked hard and played less. Moved in with one of my best mates and his girlfriend and it was a blast for a few months. Then they started to push me around and me being me let them. Then I found out they were screwing me out of money. After being almost sick by how little money I had to survive on that was the straw that broke this camels back and I flipped. I helped this guy out when his dad left him and moved to America when he was 16. I was there for him in the worst time of his life and this is how I get treated? They didn't listen to me until I went into the Estate Agents and told them I wanted out. I got angry for the first time in my life and forced all partys to let me go. Now I don't let anybody push me around and I do my best to not let anybody get away with any sh*t they try to pull.
2: Fell quite ill early last year due to the hours my job wanted me to do and a bowel infection. It soon blossomed to something horrible and I became depressed and lost an incredible amount of weight as my condition causes me to not absorb stuff from food that much but it also causes a huge loss of appitite. I had to give up my car, seeing a lot of my friends and doing a lot of what I like doing. Over the last three months I have forced myself to become better, have enrolled at University, got a new car and gotten myself a really laid back job. I am still in constant pain but I now walk about with a smile on my face as nothing seems too difficult and anything small that goes wrong can be fixed. I've managed to rebuild my life from the ground up and, somehow, come out the other end more sane than when I went in.
Probably a lot of words for most to read there but if you did, thanks.
