Prime Black
Drybrush Boltgun metal over the whole model
Use a fairly large brush to put Knarloc Green on the flesh.
Wash flesh with watered-down orkhide shade.
Drybrush flesh with camo green (for earthier looking orks) or Goblin Green (for brighter orks)
Lightly drybrush face with rotting flesh (for earthier) or Scorpion Green (for brighter)
Paint clothing with whatever colour foundation paint works for you - taking care not to paint over the metal bits.
Give that a quick wash of devlan mud or gryphonne sepia, depending on what colour you were using.
Touch up nails, teeth, etc. w/ Deneb Stone + Sepia wash
Put red dots in for eyes.
Yields good results quickly, especially assembly-line:

My first army was (like a lot of people) Ultramarines. I only have one beaky-marine left from that army (which miraculously survived when I sold the 'entire' army), and the painting is a little messy. I only had a Starter Paint set at the time, so I didn't have Gold- the Aquila on his chest is Bad Moon Yellow (remember that colour?), and the yellow banding around the shoulders isn't even straight in places. My painting has improved, but I'm still rarely happy with it (I don't use washes because I'm not sure how to use them yet).

First army i got around to painting was eldar. Apparently, i wasn't paying attention when i bought the spray paint to prime them, and ended up priming about 10 guardians with Gloss white.
Not knowing at the time what a horrible mistake i had made, i attempted to paint them anyway. Long story short, it was a disaster. Primer was thick, and the paintjob was blotchy. And i never did discover a stripper that would remove the primer without melting them. Although at the time i had not discovered the wonders of Simple Green.
There was even one game where i knocked a guardian off the table and stepped on it. I didn't even care. As far as i was concerned, they were already dead to me.

My first 40k mini:
Rogue Trader had just been released, and the plastic minis looked awesome in all the ads. Unfortunately, I think they impregnated the dark green plastic with Teflon, because it repelled paint. Seriously.I'd throw some red paint on the guy, and I swear he'd shake himself like a wet cocker spaniel until he was back to his original dark green colour. I didn't know about washing the casting grease off first with soap, or undercoating with white. Kinda cool at first, but soon got very annoying...
Almost 30 years later, I think I'm getting the hang of this painting thing...
The difference? I now undercoat with tree sap. Good for the enviroment (unless you're a tree), it retains any paint I throw on the model, and makes a fine air freshener for my classic '05 Cavalier.
Wierd, all that time and I'm STILL trying to finish a space wolves army.

Beautiful... this thread should be some inspiration to some newer painters because when you look at the amazing work done by Mastiff and others, you can see how far they've come. All it takes is a bit of determination and sticking with it. Great stuff!

I found a few models from when I first tried painting as an adolescent. I'm pretty sure I was confusing paint with mortar. Not many survivors from that era.
I'm getting back into it now and was thinking I was doing a respectable job. I've seen some of the before/after pictures though and I'm inclined to think I lean a lot more towards "Before" and a bit less to "After" than I thought. I guess they're acceptable for table top, but that's not great considering I spend an awful lot of time per mini (My assembly line painting has a bad habit of turning into "Let's futz with this one some more").
My eyes are downright embarassing, and I really, really need to learn how to thin and blend paint.

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

My first minis were a squad of tyranids. they. were. HORRID. I say were, because they're been stripped, trimmed, and toothbrush'd so many times that they look like blobs of plastic.

Most of my painting improvement came between end 2004 and 2006. Improving technique, brushes, color theory etc.
Early 2004 - Drybrush, wash, and gloss varnish FTW.
