OMG. I agree...

@ Polonius: Running equally mechanized was a good counter to Rhino Rush. Typical army would contain 5-6 rhino hulls. You'd just need 2-3 stunned/immobilized results to completely blunt that attack, as stunned prohibitted disembark in V3. Multishot S6-8 weapons were very good for this. If you deployed second, you could castle on one flank. That'd also buy you some time. There were other very good builds in V3 other than Rhino rush... there were:

Tyranid escalating foot horde of everything getting cover saves!
Ork Kult of Speed...!
Dark Eldar Raider Horde and Dark Eldar Wych Cult
Eldar - Vanilla, Alaitoc, Ulthwe and Biel Tan were all competitive.
Sisters of Battle and Sisters of Battle with Zealots!

Getting back on track - I think a Golden Age is when there is lots of interest and the hobby is growing. I am not sure that the hobby is growing any faster now than it was at the advent of V3. Models are better, but the starting price point has got to be hurting growth.

@ Polonius 2 re: Eldar being a marine killing manual...

You'll get no sympathy from me, considering that heavy bolters and whirlwinds were the ubiquitous "wound on 2+ no save" answer to 90% of the Eldar dex.

Hey, I played IG, and IG alone in 3rd. I knew how to stop a rhino rush.

I'll agree that late 3rd was more of golden age in terms of expanding the hobby. The world was a bit more limitless then, it seemed.

To be fair, Eldar could also be built as other things.

But who are we kidding?

Eldar were built as Marine-killers par excellence, precisely because the metagame was so heavily Marine.

And really, Dark Reapers as Troops were pure WIN.

Mine were homing beacons for whirlwind shells. Wound on 2+, no save and all that jazz.

Oddly enough, while Whirlwinds were great in 3E, only a few players took them. I saw a lot more Las Preds at twice the cost.

You saw a lot of guys with a single whirlwind. In my area they were pretty ubiquitous, along with the triple las predator and a five man ML dev squad.

Is it too early to claim golden age? Certainly 5th edition is better than 4th. But 3rd was also better than 4th. I think we need at least two succesive editions of improvement before we start claiming golden age.

By the way the models they are coming out with are truly amazing. (excepting the space marine riding a wolf thing)

I had a fantastic time playing Third ed. It had a lot of broken stuff/systems, but it was the biggest overhaul the game ever got, and really made the game fresh and new after the insanity of earlier editions. It added much more movement and sped the game up a great deal. 4th was largely an improvement, but missed a number of opportunities. 5th is certainly the best-written and designed rules set 40k has ever had.

There are codices that could certainly be much better, but there have always been stinkers. If anyone wants to complain about the current Dark Angels or Chaos codices, please feel free to refresh your memories of Jervis’ 3rd ed Dark Angels and Chaos codices. Hey, at the beginning of each turn I roll a d6 for each of my DA units, and on a 1 they refuse to move this turn! Awesome!

The models are much better now as well.

Washes and kits nowadays make painting well so much easier.

The only areas in which GW doesn’t have it all over their earlier selves are the freshness/sense of infinite possibility of the fluff (which those of us who started 10+ years ago are probably incapable of comparing anyway, due to our long familiarity with the fluff), and White Dwarf.

Yes, it’s a golden age. The only thing which could genuinely make it better would be more kits matching the amazing pricing/value of the current line of Warhammer core unit boxes.

I think that modelling HAS gotten a LOT better than it was before. But the price gouging is just INSANE.

Take for instance the Imperial Guard. I was collecting those not too long ago, maybe 4 months ago at the most. I loved how you could get 20 guardsmen for a reasonable price. Flash forward to now....Now you pay the same, if not MORE for 10 guardsmen. The quality hasn't gone up, it's the same model-same sprue-same everything with nothing new added. They just took out some sprues, put it in a better looking cardboard box with updated graphics, and increased the price by $5 to $7. I know times are hard but that's just insane.

HOWEVER, I do like the fact that they made Battleforce Sets where you can get a bunch of things at one time. Too bad that if you total everything up from the battleforce separately, you don't save anything. I understand that business is business, but it's pretty bad when a 12 year old can figure out that math...

Don't worry too much. Your quotation in my sig (from a certain thread) was civil diobedience in the face of your absence. Now that you're back, I'll just wait until you say something else ridiculous, dead-on, or ridiculously dead-on. It can't be that long a wait, I'm sure.

Alright, this I'll settle for as reasonable.
