You could build a shanty 1/2 mile from your "actual" home and defend it from there so technically you COULD defend it from 1/2 mile away.

Or you could be defending livestock from predators. Farmers around here may shoot coyotes on sight due to depredation laws. "Protection" shouldn't be construed to only apply to criminals.

*Modified to have a wireless, battery powered Webcam (so you can see where it's going) and an MP3 player replete with Speakers, blaring out ride of the Valkyries for added psychological effect.
Sit back, watch the screen, and chase that thieving little gyppo all the way home!
Thinking like this is what gets you an Empire, dontcha know!
That would get you a million hits on youtube easy.
