Hi folks,
So, a long-overdue update, with pics to follow later on: project got a bit sidelined, but hopefully will get finished off in the next short while: new aerials required, some extra detailing added which I want feedback on etc.

Also, I wanted a quick informal poll on what to build next: I'm thinking a Stormlord (I acquired the front gun off a pal building a plaguelord), possibly magnetised at the front to swap for Banehammer/Doomhammer. Opinions?

Stormlord is the Vulcan Mega Bolter one, I think. If I'm remembering correctly, Stormblade is Plasma Blastgun.

Indeed, stormbkade is the blast gun. That will, eventually, be tank #3 in the far, far future...

I'm exercising the write in vote option and going with...

Rule #1: Never cross a mod...

I'm going to look at the feasability of making the entire upper hull swappable, so that I can switch between stormlord/doom/bane and shadowsword/stormblade. I really don't know if it's doable, but the big-a$$ gun is tempting me!

A couple of detail shots, paintwork incomplete as usual; sorry about camerawork, wife's camera much quicker and easier to set up than mine.

The sword, well, it's a "blade", after all; I'm reasonably happy with the freehand scrollwork, less so with the lettering but dang, it's tricky! And the BB is officially named Cantate Veniae: Sing for Absolution.

This came from a friend's suggestion. I felt the faring was too plain, and could do with something extra; he suggested scrollwork, and that got me thinking. One banner later, and we've got the beginning of a dedication scroll:
I think I need to cut some chips into the purity seal tail, and I'm now wondering what aspect of the liturgy to have on the scrollwork - suggestions?

Lastly, a top-shot - observant viewers will notice aerials are missing, becuase they're going to get redone with brass rod. C&C as always appreciated, folks!

Quick update - I thought I'd add some oil staining:

Sadly, that's the last of my classic chestnut ink gone, and devlan mud/gryphone sepia just don't seem to cut it, so it may be a case of thinning windsor and newton inks. Any other suggestions?

At the top of the pic you can also see the banner detail taking shape, btw.

I'm also adding some bullet damage, new aerials are on, some more stowage is going to get added and I might try a freehand logo of a knight charging. I'm a bit scared of that though...

Looking good, as I said before I like the girth on this guy! What are the dimensions, if you don't mind me asking?
At some point I want to try my hand at another baneblade-esque tank, this time completely scratchbuilt like yours, and I think your dimensions are great for what I'm imagining!

Rude boy Well, off the top of my head I can tell you how it compares to as standard baneblade: each faring is 1cm ider, the back is 3 cm longer, and it sits 4cm higher (though that's more my wheels than anything else). I'll happily email you the plans if you wish.

The next big project is going to be the Stormlord. I've got most of the bitz I need - go on the bargain bin at Conflict - total spend stands at £8.46 before foamcore, at present. However, I don't have plans for this, so mostly, it'll be trial and error - joy. Unless anyone knows of plans for a Stormlord (or a Shadowsword for that matter - easily adapted). I know that I'm intending to make it wider, again, and longer, so that the crew compartment can feasibly carry 20 troops (I know it has capacity 40, but that'd be just daft) in game cos that'd just look awesome.

I'm also getting a Hellhammer cannon; I was going to use it to make a LR Eradicator but I'm now seriously thinking about taking a saw to the front of the Baneblade's cannon about halfway up (one side of the ring of rivets) and magnetising. Thoughts?

I have a similar question as that, usually when I choose to make something it is a mix of cost vs time and sometimes no model of what I want.
A very expensive model is worth a bit of time to make but you look like you went well past the time it is worth to buy (or is it to show you can?).
Not many people can scratch build anything that good so the point is moot: it looks like the original FW model so no issues.

Used a Tamiya Mud Stick for the first time: good for adding colour and texture simultaneously, if a bit blocky (vid. front right wheel) and then layered browns from MP Chocolate Brown, through MP Earth Brown, MP Khakhi and GW Desert Yellow. Even found time to do a bit of freehand scrollwork along the top! Also experimented with Tamiya powders for rust/soot on the exhausts; like the result, very subtle, but photo was rubbish and I'm too tired to take another one. Next stop: adding colour to lights and painting the commander (hence the shiny forehead!).

Ah, grasshopper, you have only just discovered the joys of Tamiya mud stick. As time passes, you will find it has millions of uses, from basing minis to creating dioramas.

Well, a couple of centimeters here and there certainly makes a difference. Cool, I may take you up on your offer about the plans, but it won't be for awhile, uni and another project come first for now. Can't wait to see the finished project!

Ooh! Project! Looking forward to that then.

@Baron: Yeah, it's pretty tasty. I think it's going to be in full force with my Death Rider bases. I'm still uncertain about the Tamiya Powders, the rust is really too delicate, I think.

@Lx: That's more the wheels than the tracks, I think. I do see where you're coming from, but it was a compromise and as such leaves no-one satisfied

Yeah, well, it's really just born of sheer bloody-mindedness on my part and a refusal to pay for £50-60 if it's feasible to do oneself. It's also massively satisfying, it's chunky and entirely to my own tastes. In addition, the build itself wasn't really the time consuming part; it's the constant fiddling and tweaking paintwork and accessories (hmm, does it still need more stowage? Argh!) Nevertheless, tis very kind of you to say it looks like the FW original, much appreciated.

I picked up the Hellhammer cannon, and realised having looked up reference pics I'd need to cut it right back to the mount. The barrel of the Baneblade cannon is actually mounted inside a rubber stopper, so I *could* remove it (this would break it; it's glued/gs'd in, so I'd need to make another) and make the weapons swappable; or, I could cut and magnetize; or, I could just leave it. Thoughts?

C&C appreciated as ever,

graven

Yeah, I apply the dust *after* I seal it, otherwise the dullcoat overwhelms it. The 'weathering master' kit has a little more staying power, but I'll admit that I tend to use it instead of drybrushing edge highlights. (their 'sand' one puts a nice highlight on olive green/OD green, but is still best applied on top of dullcoat)

Which people complain about since it's not a 'cool' mini color choice, it's looks too 'generic' but I personally like it looking similar to real vehicles rather then the fantasy paintjobs I see on some models, or the absurd levels of weathering on others. Someone would be painting the tank again, and have steady KP for the duration if the Lt saw some of these...

Are you going to get more chestnut ink from Coat D'arm? It's pretty much the same thing.

I agree about the weathering, Baron. I've always been into a pseudo-realistic style of painting, fairly muted; I like the line taken by military modellers with tank treatments. Good tip on the sand. I have the two weathering kits with rust, I'll look out for that one though.

Heliodore wrote:Are you going to get more chestnut ink from Coat D'arm? It's pretty much the same thing.

Ooh, forgot about that. A distinct possiblity.

So I had a look at the the Hellhammer cannon - it's tiny! It'll just look stupid against my macho baneblade. Hmm, save it for a LR turret, methinks.

This also has me worried about the Vulcan Mega Bolter -which, let's face it, isn't especially mega. I've heard some folk express concerns about its scale on the standard Stormlord, so if I'm beefing up this is a real worry.
