@ Orlanth: Valid! Availability of plans and reference pics - several options, allowing me to tweak and tailor - and it's a good starting point for a first build (although nevertheless pretty ambitious). I'm already planning what next, though, much to my wife's despair!

Okay, so, didn't get much done over the weekend - nephew's birthday (bought him black reach - thread to follow, as I want some opinions!) and hanging curtains, but I did do a paint test: specifically, Chaos Black spray on foam core. And, it didn't melt So, now I wonder if I should risk it on the tank as a whole? It may be that because it is nitheringly cold, which can affect the ability of spray to permeate, or just the paper coated core is okay to spray. Thoughts?

Have conceded that I'm going to add a couple of extra rivetty bits here and there. I also found a couple of terminator honours and scrolls off a crusader; good to add, or just inconsistent and weird?

Things look good when you keep them in scale. I put purity seals on my titan, they are okay, but they're really too small in my opinion. Mine would have benefited from another medium size banner instead.

love this! is it bigger than a standard baneblade? oh and proabably too late, but you could buy some brass etched imperial eagles quiet cheaply considering from forgeworld. they look good

Only difference is that it's slightly wider in the tracks (about 1cm) to account for my chunky wheels and foamcore (4.5cm rather than 3.5cm, IIRC); it is modelled on the FW Mars Pattern, though, rather than the plastic kit, so I suppose if that's slightly beefier, then yes again. I was thinking of calling it an Arkurion pattern BB and seeing if anyone twigged

As for FW - yup, they're loverly, but I can't justify the spend: £8.80 would take the total project spend to over £30, which is against the rules! Crazy perhaps, but true.

I was hanging more curtains last night - - and as I was standing in the garage in -4C hacking away at steel poles I thought to myself hmmm... these offcuts'd make some mighty gun barrels! Oh dear...

Looking good, creative use of bitz and other items. I wish I could mentally prepare better for projects like this, can't wait to see it painted!

Ok, so added some detail to the side doors, the rear of the sponsons, trim and to the rear sides of the farings:

I had thought about adding more plasticard trim to the edges of rear and side sponson hatches, but am now thinking of just grey stuffing and sculpting/filing flat. Thoughts?

Other than that, it's pretty much done. I wonder about a couple of small plates on the outer edges of each faring at the front (before the rhino door/track guards) as trim.

I'm also thinking of posting a wip of the army as a whole - it's a combination of plastic cadians, urban war and space tommies, mostly (plus some resurrected tanks - ah, eBay!) if folk would be interested.

As always, comments etc appreciated!

If I were you i'd be tempted to give it an all-over coat of your base colour, just to get it looking uniform, so you can stand back and assess the level of detail without all the different colours and materials distracting the eye. But that's just me.

It's looking great, and i'd love to see a blog of your other work on this army

Yes, I know it's rubbish picture, I'll break out my proper camera at some point!

Primed by hand with MP Black Primer 0 and a Citadel Master large flat drybrush. Lovely stuff, actually, but I've run out

Hey man, you said it about the photo quality, so the only one really qualified to say if it needs more work or not is you!

But from here, it looks excellent

Looks really good! Nothing's better than a good scratchbuild post and watching the project bear fruit.

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

Okay, so, decent (ish) pics - excuse the fruit bowl... The Griffon's there for size comparison (though makes the bb look very shiny, as it's had its first stage of dulling down):

(You can see where I ran out of primer!)

Thanks for continuing comments folks (@Heliodore - I see your jealousy and raise you envy...)

Spooky!

Anyway. I think it looks really good, if you do more to it it might look a bit overwrought

Glad you like it (tank, not fruit). Yeah, I feel it's about right in the bumpy stakes. I'm tempted to replace the plastic antennae with thin brass, as per the Griffon. A friend gave me some brass olives, about 6mm deep, to place atop the exhausts, but I think they're okay as they are. I also wondered about more luggage etc., but again, I think it's just about there.

I was worried that the side hatches needed hinges, but I think they're okay, and that the sponson hatches (the chimera ones and the gothic arched ones) needed some filling around the edges likewise (but, ditto).

The only thing I spot from the photos (a good thing sitting back and just looking at the still image) is that the barrel tip needs filled, both at the top and bottom and around the inside of the rim, which I hadn't noticed on the physical model.

Anyway, cheers for the feedback Million; keep 'em coming, folks!

Nice work on this scratchbuild, it's come together really nicely. I remember the plans published in WD, and actually tried to make the BB from card (which was too thin so I never got far). IIRC there were some plans to build an Ork Gobsmasha published around the same time - they weren't in the same issue were they? (That used coffee jar lids for wheels! )

Note to self - or anyone else who attempts this - paint wheels/track before assembly. Nightmare. 2 hours and much south park later, just about done. Bed...

Been a while with an update - xmas, offspring and all that. Sat down to apply the basecoat yesterday, as well as all the rivets (most will disappear after weathering, but I want some to be able to peek out, as it were). Next stage is probably to Tamiya Smoke the whole beast (I'll do a test underneath and see how it goes) Cheers for the continuing input folks!

Oh, I also replace the aerials with brass rod. Too flimsy, otherwise. Excuse the state of my modelling area, too!

You're modeling area looks down right clean and clear in my opinion.

Okay, so gave the entire thing a coat of thinned Tamiya Smoke:

It's certainly added depth and, in particular, the rivets are looking good (not sure how apparent that is in the photo). However, it's very shiny, which I'm only slightly concerned about. What it will do is give a good surface for weathering to adhere to: the plan is to add lightened Deep Bronze Green to the flat surfaces, and then begin weathering in earnest - washing grease and oil (and some chestnut inked rust areas), drybrushing dirt and powdering areas of rust and smoke (using Tamiya powders). Any tips gratefully received!

Testor's Dullcote that's what you need to get rid of the shine. I use it quite a bit, but don't use it when you have the windows closed, it whiffs! Goes on shiny and sometimes looks a bit thick but will dry to a nice matt finish.

So, flattened down the colour with additional drybrushing, and started added weathering:

Used a Tamiya Mud Stick for the first time: good for adding colour and texture simultaneously, if a bit blocky (vid. front right wheel) and then layered browns from MP Chocolate Brown, through MP Earth Brown, MP Khakhi and GW Desert Yellow. Even found time to do a bit of freehand scrollwork along the top! Also experimented with Tamiya powders for rust/soot on the exhausts; like the result, very subtle, but photo was rubbish and I'm too tired to take another one. Next stop: adding colour to lights and painting the commander (hence the shiny forehead!).
