Well, now that I've looked up Trijicon's serial system, I can say that it isn't actually part of a serial number. The line number actually end immediately before the passage quote, the model number is either located after it (out of frame) or on another part of the sight.
Though there would be no way for anyone to know that without first being told, or questioning the odd colon in the number itself.

As has been said, this isn't that big a deal and certainly no reason to stop buying from a quality manufacturer, but if it is okay to have this much Jesus on your military gear, you get into an issue of how much Jesus is too much?
Better to just do what most governments are doing and file the numbers off and require no such references on future weapons.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I've been following this thread with some interest, being of mixed opinion on the subject.
The thing that could be bad is if the scopes were passed off to the Afgans and it seemed the only concern seen from on our part were a shoulder shrug, and a comment, "It doesn't matter that much".
I'm not a huge historian, but didn't a mutiny against the British start in India because Indian soldiers believed their cartidges were greased with pigs and cow fat? If I recall from reading about it, the British didn't think it was that big an issue and ignored it. The whole thing then blew up in the face of the British and became rather nasty.
Is such a thing possible for us over the scripture references?

The Mutiny was not just about the cartridges. There was widespread dissatisfaction with British rule.
The cartridge grease issue was not true, just a rumour that got picked up by the sepoys because they were already in a bad mood.

Right, but wasn't the issue ignored by the British until they had to start jailing people for refusing to use the ammo?

Yes.
It was punishment of some sepoys which actually sparked off the mutiny (I don't remember the precise detail of the first outbreak.)

Thing is, though, we're not Christian nations and we don't favour one religion over any other, and our armed forces consist of people from all walks of life. If you're going to accept general use equipment with obtuse references to the Bible, what exactly is the line where there's too much Jesus on your army gear?

Seeing the way it was snuck in though... Kinda makes me think the company should have been a bit more up front about it maybe?

And the cycle of ignorance continues. You can wear Christian endorsed gear and uniforms in a multi-ethnic, multi-religious army in your second war. In your first one you have to wear things promoting Hindu. That's ok with right?

I post on another forum that's a lot more left leaning than this one. I was puzzled by the faux outrage over this on that site, and was genuinely puzzled by the efforts to make this into a much bigger issue than it is. I'm a lot more puzzled by the inability of people on this site to realise that the military of a government that prides itself on treating all religions equally shouldn't have references to one religion on it's gear.
Yes, it isn't a big deal that a supplier snuck obscure religious references onto gun sights. But once found, they should be removed. I really have no idea how anyone could reach a different conclusion.

It is because people do not care, that simple, no more thought needed.
Reading through reactions on several websites, and listening to several clips, I can safely conclude that is the main reason.
I say, give each soldier a file, and have them go to work on the last digits of the serial number. I personally feel that irrelevant to it's priority, it's ease of repair as a political issue, clearly leans to your conclusion.
If there is no issue, then get rid of it. No more thought needed, this is not a piece of hardware that in any way relies on those last few digits to be there, so file them off.

What did you think I said, because I'm trying to figure out where your post differs to mine.
I wouldn't even bother soldiers with handing out files and haslling soldiers who likely have much better things to do. I'd just assign the job to some poor kid in the quartermaster's office, and as each weapon is handed in for whatever purpose, then the markings are filed off before return.
