The appartment complex I live in had over a dozen break ins in less than 2 months, and the police, when they finaly did arive, seemed less than interested in what many of the victiams had to report (most of those burglirized seemed to belive the cops attitude was due to the fact that the neighborhood is predominantly Hispanic).
Personaly,I have very little faith in "law enforcement" to protect my family,so I choose to equip myself to protect them myself.
Yeah, there are areas which are comparable in the UK - I've been burgled several times. I had a mate who was burgled so many times he ended up leaving a note out which said 'we have nothing left - stop breaking into our house'. I get it - I really do. There are rough areas in which you will be more likely to be a victim of crime in most countries. My point was that for most people, being victim of crime is not a common occurence - the perception of threat can often be grossly inflated until it barely resembles reality.
That said I don't blame you for having a gun if your area is 'less than salubrious', lets' say - I hated the area I was brought up in and would definitely have bought a gun if I had been legally allowed to back then. What I DID do was get the feth 'out of Dodge' as soon as I could, and I never looked back. I honestly think that taking oneself out of harm's way makes for a more peaceful life.
Yeah, the neighborhood I grew up in was definatly "less than salubrious",most of us learned how to fight before we learned how to read,so I can honestly understand "getting the feth out of Dodge".
The neighborhood we live in now really isn't that bad, predominatly working class folks, most of whom are quite nice, just an occasional bit of trouble now and again, truthfully me owning a gun (or 4) just heightens my sense of security .
I also agree with you that the perception of a threat (selling fear) can become a bit of an obsesion ( bar up your home!,install this alarm system!Load up your guns and hide under the table!!),I don't go that far by any means.

That's what hollow points are for
And if all else fails, then I have a monstrous bayonet and a steel-backed wooden buttstock

You know if you give that Pomeranian a steady diet of Mex food you'd have an RPP ("rocket propelled pomeranian").

I have claymores I put out before bed in front of both back and front door. If anyone survives that they get a .45 hollow to the chest cavity.

Ever read a claymore?
Front: point towards enemy--good advice.
DO NOT EAT--even better advice.
