I think it would make sense to have limit on the amount of time you could stay in the guard as you get older you get weaker etc, making you not worth the trouble in the imperiums eyes.

As regiments are normally recruited all at once the men would age the same. I ve read references to regiments getting retired onto worlds they conquered this may be a way out.

Apart from that i d hazard a guess at having a certain age after which you retire or something unsure though

Cadian's don't all serve in the IG, they all serve in the PDF. Those that show the most skill in battle are inducted into the IG, as the other guy said. Also, if a regiment performs really well they're given custodianship of the planet they've just liberated, so they can have more kids there. And, as another guy said, sometimes they travel with there family.

Oh, and there's lots of guardswomen too.....

Considering Cadia is on a permanent war footing, for damned good reason, why do people keep insisting that it has a PDF and not a permanently garrisoned army? It makes sense for every Cadian to be in the military because when a crusade comes out the gate, said crusade is going to be doing their best to kill every person on the planet so they might as well be trained to defend themselves properly.

Yep. Got his hand shot off in the process, too.
