Ard boyz isnt worth the 3 hour drive to a story for a better chance of winning for me. Thats too much effort for a tournament of 40k I can play much closer. I can understand if your store has lots and lots of really good players, but its just not worth it to me. Traveling for hours to hunt down noobs is just bad sportsmanship in my mind.
@dashofpepper
Why would you drive to a store with the intent of of preventing their players from playing in the ard boys. Sounds like they have every reason to dislike you at that store. Anytime I start getting back into the competitive swing of the hobby I read some of your posts to remind myself what not to become.

shoggoth - retaliation. Small in scale to the affronts deserving retaliation, but all I could do. I've no trouble getting along with gamers around the world, and count myself fortunate that I've met so many awesome folks from around the country in my travels to play 40k. I've no tears to shed for a handful of local dicks.

The only PM I sent you was one asking you to not to call my wife names or be disrespectful in your messages to her or other people. I wouldn't need to PM you at all if you would behave yourself, and I'd rather PM you asking you to moderate yourself than mash "mod alert" all day. I'm sure that deep down you have the ability to be polite. Bring that to the forefront and show us your nicer side!

Wow, this got sort of ugly. I wonder why the harsh feelings?
Choosing your battles is simply smart play in my mind, but everyone is free to have their opinions about it. I really don't see any need to start hurling insults at anyone over something so minor.

Nobody wants to beat their friends, or be synched out of competition by them.
It's "fine to do" b/c 40k isn't professionalized. Were it, you'd have to play within your "division" and just suck it up. Just talk to the NFC East.
Within tabletop strategy gaming? Just go wherever you want, dudes ... it's not like ard boyz is king competition, anyway - it's 2500 point madness in pursuit of a free army.

This is a good point. I hate when I show up to an event, and just play against my friends. Especially when we carpool at least 100 miles to play in it.

@Dash
I seem to recall semis at the Hobbit going a little differently than all that...
@the room
My friend and I drove from Columbia to Fayetteville to game at the Hobbit and had a good experience all around. Decent tables, competent TO, and the space was great for the event.
On topic:
My friends and I are trying to figure out the same thing. There's not too many places hosting in SC, so we're definitely going to have to travel, and we'll probably go to two separate venues for all the reasons outlined by others-- especially since it does suck to drive 1-2 hours only to play someone you could have played at the FLGS or at home with beer in hand.

Ah...there was nothing wrong with the Hobbit Hobby. There was a single player there I had a problem with, who happened to be my first round opponent. We started game 1, I packed up my models momentarily after that - had friends in from Cary, Knightdale and Greenville; went to pass my regards and wish them luck, then went home and slept the rest of the day. I was sick going into the event, and the first round shenanigans were more than I could take. Wouldn't happen again in a million years; I know the rules pretty damn well now. The game started off with me not remembering how to do deployment; I was that out of it. Mechanized Orks and I told my opponent to deploy first with his mechanized Eldar. *laughing* Then I was caught off guard when he got to go first too; I thought....I have no idea what I was thinking.
But this one individual later promised in bitter forum posts here and elsewhere that he was going to try ruining me, and he *is* a Fayetteville local; so I'd rather play somewhere fresh and clean. I played at quarterfinals last year at the Hobbit Hobby and took first; had a great time. Only had a minor issue second round against old tyranids and...whatever the mission was and the killpoints. He ended up getting 4th, but I gave up my 1st place semi-finals ticket so he got in anyway (I played elsewhere on Sunday and took 1st there too). At the time I was still building my army and $60 or $90 of loot or whatever it was was too attractive not to try for x2.

So...you got upset that you messed up in deployment, saw yourself getting your ass handed to you, and stormed out? No wonder people dont like you locally, between that and the other shenanigans you have already admitted to. Geez. That's the link to the info for the GE Ard boyz tournament.
With Dave, Geoff, Shane, Pat, Danny, George, Ian, and any of a bout a half dozen other guys there playing, the comp will be pretty damn stiff. Don't let that put you off though, if you want to come you should, it will be a fun tournament and a good learning experience.

Hey Hulk,
In the So Cal area, I could be wrong, but I believe that all the stores are doing it on Sat the 15th. As I understand it, that date is also somewhat "Mandated" by GW, since otherwise it would allow players to play in multiple qualifying rounds.
I know at Game Empire in SD, Cliff (The owner) tried to do some event juggling since the RPGA (Dungeons & Dragons) folks had something scheduled on the same day.

Playing someone you play with all the time the 1st round is not very fun. That being said, playing 10 minutes from my house is much better then driving a long ways away.

@Wolflord
It's not mandated that they do it on saturday. Just that they do it that weekend. In fact it says on the website to check with your local stores. Last year there were 2 places locally doing it sunday instead of saturday because of the Magic Release and it might have been more across the country. I've just got my fingers crossed for someone doing it on sunday since it's a family moving day on Saturday
