One of the reasons the UK has restricted gun ownership laws is that there were so many people coming back with guns from kicking French bottom (yet again) after the Napoleonic wars.

Plus if you give an Englishman a gun, it is only a matter of time before he starts wearing a red jacket and owns half the world...

I thought that had something to do with foxhunting or pheasants. The 'take over the world' idea is so 3 centuries ago. Now they make movies like 'snatch' instead.

Retroactively applied infallability is its own reward. I wish I knew this years ago.

You dont ban guns you tax the gak out of them.. like my beloved cigarettes going up 22% because the delicate folk can't breathe or something. Stupid Australia.

Like I'm probably gonna have to quit properly now..

Stupid Australia..

And every time some stupid lobby mentions how guns are bad the tax goes up again because you love money don't you Govt.

I'm not against Yanks having guns cause well its part of their culture. But personally I have no interest in owning one.

However, unlike cigarettes, guns don't kill people - rappers do.

The US became a soverign nation on the back of civilians with guns. We may have gotten our ass's handed to us at almost every major battle by the brits, but it still helped us make the revelution to costly for your wallets.

During the French & Indian war, the "mountain men" were just civilians with guns and look what they did.

In WWI the first snipers were farm boys that grew up in rural America hunting.

I feal that guns are deeply engrained into the American way of life. I'm a firm beliver that the goverment should stay out of my life. I think everyone should be able to own whatever they want as long as it doesnt interfer with others inalienable rights.

Do I own guns? Yes I do. Have my guns ever hurt anyone? Nope and they never will. Unless Russia invades, then there will be a pile of dead Commies at the end of my driveway

The militia played an important, albeit often overstated role in the revolution.

The idea that simple gun ownership makes one capable of a revolution is the error, however. Once one has everything else needed to undertake a revolution, it's very easy to get your hands on a gun.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Sorry to but in on here, i think Silver was joking with that one. A Welsh rap group called goldie lookin chain did a song called that.

On Topic - I honestly don't think legal gun possession is related to intended violence. I know plenty of people who own shotguns legally and have very few violent tendencies. So really if someone wanted to shoot someone, they would get themselves one illegally. Or knife them instead. So if it makes someone feel safer in their own home, whats the issue?

The goal of this law is laudable, but reality says it won't work. The Restricted Firearms law doesn't even work here in Canada. Every week the RCMP or Municipal Police forces across BC alone are making drug/gun busts and they're pulling out everything from Machine Pistols to AK47's, Dragunovs, and M4's, to SAWs, MG3's, and there was even one bust a few years ago that netted a damn RPG.

Restricted Firearms laws -do- make certain types of weapons harder to obtain - which does severely limit gun-crime - though it doesn't come even close to eliminating RF sales and owners.

The other problem with it is that you'd need to set up such laws in a place where 'restricted' weapons weren't already a popular part of the culture. Taking guns away from the American people would end rather poorly for the government. Personally, I think the US Government is better off just letting it slide, and milking cash from all the expenses it takes to purchase and register such a wide variety of guns. They could certainly use the dough.

In WWI the first snipers were farm boys that grew up in rural America hunting.

Then how is it that there were Snipers on both sides before the Americans entered WWI? Never mind that there were Snipers -well- before the turn of the century. I've no intention of coming off as rude, but America can't take credit for the idea of using soldiers trained in long-range precision shooting. The idea of snipers has been around far longer than the US of A.

Don't worry Metallifan, the US government already taxes us to feth and back on guns and ammo and now they want people to report their guns on their tax forms as "assets".

Eventually ammo prices will triple and sales tax on guns and ammo will rise to 30%. The government will figure "hey, we can't take guns away so we'll tax them so bad that gun sales will just stop."

It's their answer to obesity in this country.

--The whole concept of government granted and government regulated 'permits' and the accompanying government mandate for government approved firearms 'training' prior to being blessed by government with the privilege to carry arms in a government approved and regulated manner, flies directly in the face of the fundamental right to keep and bear arms.

You know, they really can't ban guns in this country. I mean, the people who want them are just going to get them off the black market, and the people who would only use them for hunting/self defense can't get them...

But the real reason they can't ban guns in this country is that I would feel so much safer come the Zombie Apocolypse if there were millions of guns lying around for me, ya know?

You're telling me. Gordon Campbell, the Premier of BC, is introducing the new HST "Whether the public likes it or not", which will officially add a 13% tax onto pretty much everything, including food. So for low-income families, he's forcing them to choose between bills or a meal thanks to the fact that he ignored the $4 billion CAD deficit and authorized spending even more money building up the Vancouver Olympics. Essentially, we're picking up his mess and he's not even admitting it's his fault. As if he doesn't make enough selling off whole rivers and chunks of land to private firms that might as well be paying into his pocket for the good he's done with the money.

Kind of like how a pro-income group tried to get him to raise minimum wage in the province to $10.00/hr (up from $8.00) and he practically told them to Feth themselves and gave -himself- a raise just to spite them.

And people wonder why I believe the BC provincial elections have been getting rigged since Campbell took office...

Sorry, OT rant in the OT forums. But when someone is a douche even by political standards, I get all fired up.

I dunno about you but I have never actually been to the 'black market'. It's a cute term, but banned guns means less people willing to sell the one they already have, and I don't hang with guys named Vinnie who may get a shipment that fell off a truck like you see on TV. Maybe I'm just naive.
