Noawadays, I use Gretchin as scoring units, as cheapo tarpit units or (more situational) ablative wound markers for my Nobs. Yes really. I do hate Assault Terminators so much, so assuming I can kill their ride, I try to take advantage of Ork charging radius, to use Grots to pull attacks away from the Nobs; after all, a Thunder Hammer is *less* effective against Grots.

That said, the best Grot units are Killa Kanz; they're so adorable how they waddle into battle, happily blasting away the foe. If we're talking Forgeworld stuff, then Grot Tanks, Grot Sponsons, and Grot Bombs also deserve mention.

As cheap objective holders grots are a nightmare to attempt to shoot off the objective. I think of shooting at 3 point models in a 3+ cover save to be as futile as shooting at 1 point models that are out in the open, both are a waste of bullets that no army can spare as long as there are orks still menacing the battlefield. If anybody finds themselves shooting at grots in an objective based game either their good battle plan has failed, or their battle plan was flawed to begin with. With the morale re roll that the runt herder provides it really is futile to try to shoot them off an objective.

The best possible way to handle grots on an objective is to ignore until one of your own troops choices can boot them off the objective in an assault. Any troops choice will do so fire warriors or tactical marines will work just fine, you just don't need 20 khorne berserker to boot a bunch of grots off an objective. The WS2 S2 T2 means that the runt herder won't be able to produce enough combat resolution to win the assault, and the loss will be great enough that the morale re roll won't matter much either. Once any unit charges the grots it's over for the grots, but don't get too cocky as 20 angry grots can spit out 20 shots from their blastas and 40CC attacks on the charge if a really weak unit (like 6 fire warrriors) gets careless. The only difficult part in what I described is getting a scoring unit to the grots unmolested by the green tide of angry orks that stands between them and the objective in question.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.
