I hear what people are saying but I sympathise. To imbue a model with historic significance, even if you try as you might to remind yourseld of the fact it is just a rock. The connection is there something that won't be so easy to forget.

Personally i'd get rid of the rock. It is clearly not right for you, simply as you asked the question. The only one that could answer this is yourself. By adding the rock to the base over time your unwillingness to associate yourself with the rock will transfer to the model, and so you will come to dislike the model. It is not worth the risk no mater how great the rock is for the purpose, in my opinion it is not right by you so not right for your model.

I too would love to see an answer to this.

No one has ever asked me where I got a rock from, unless it was a rock that looked particularly un-rock-like. Because they're rocks. We know where they come from. We sit on top of 5.9 septillion metric tons of them all day long.
