I only have two armies, but the main reason for choosing them is fluff and the fact that both armies are sooooooo different.

I have Deathwing/Ravenwing Dark Angels and then Mek Orks. Orks are more for fun and because the models are great and the army is change of pace from more serious armies like Dark Angels. However, I will always have a place in my heart for Dark Angels no matter how underpowered they can seem. I have done well with them and still love them. My focus has simply shifted more towards Orks. I'm sure that when/if DA get a new book i'll jump right back to them too.

I usually pick a new army because I want a change of pace and a different feeling army, not necessarily because I am bored of my previous one.

An idea for a new theme or conversion for a centerpiece. Thats mostly what gets me started, but a great deal for lots of models can also convince me.

I have several armies that I am collecting and painting up. I usually buy models that I need when I see either a) the deal is too good to refuse b) the model for my faction is actually in stock (Privateer Press is still bad at getting stuff out that I want), or c) GW updates my codex and thus gives me new shinies to want and paint (thus adding new models to the existing range).

Well I've never actually started a new army as such! The reason for this is that I first started off playing space marines back when I was 12 or whatever, just before 4th edition just came out, and I made up my own chapter, with my own color scheme fluff and everything! I was really into that side of the hobby back then. I stopped playing the game when I was about 15 so 6 years later I've still not got round to completely finish painting everything that I bought in the typical OMGWTF spez mArines teenage buying rage. Even though I'm more interested in competitive since I've returned to the game and currently have totally abandoned my fluff by proxing them as Space Wolves (a weirdly coincidental justification from my original fluff does actually state that the Ice Dragons somehow managed to utilize the lost gene seed of I think Lunar Wolves - and that the Wolfiness never manifested itself in them - until now that is!). Despite abandoning the fluff for the most part I still lovingly paint each model individually with particular care to my color scheme and iconography that I set when I was 12, taking a lot of time to personalize my army.

So now that my army is almost entirely finished I am looking to start a new army - and so I voted I would plan it out well in advance, just as I'm doing currently! The main factor is that the army would would have to be competitive, but also that its from Warhammer fantasy battle as I'm looking for a change from 40k! I would love to be able to unite both parts of my hobby - to be able to collect a force that is both very competitive, but also one that has a lot of room for individuality and a way to make it unique - without having to proxy as a totally different army! I'm currently waiting for the new Vampire Counts codex to come out - rumors are that its out in January, and if its accompanied with lots of cool new models I'll probably start up an army if it the internet deems it satisfactory!

You should add a choice of minis. I don't ever buy new armies so the 'new' minis never grab my attention.

Themes - Nothing like having an army thats makes sence to be an army. Unlike this gang joined this gange, then here's a tank, and a monster painted purple.

Making a force with a story, a theme, and some fluff.

Another thing I like to do before designing a force is making Fluff kick @ss. Like Scouts, Spawns, or Bikes.

I tend to start an army by just seeing one model that grabs my interest. It's just like "Oooh, shiny!" Best example was when the Broodlord model came out, I suddenly just had to start a Genestealer army. It never lasts long though, I always go back to SM in the end.

I'm a Necron Player and have been for about 4 years. I started a Eldar army because I was tired of the Necrons old codex and I just wanted to start a new army. I switch to Eldar because I wanted to play something that no body else was playing. I'm the only Eldar player in my town. There used to be two but the other guy jumped on the GK band wagon.

For me it was just because no one else was playing them (not just to be different, I wanted some variety in games)

Arguing with some people is like playing chess with a pigeon. You can play the best chess in the world, but at the end of the day the pigeon will still knock all the pieces off the board and then gak all over it.

I only buy a new army when I have oppurtunity to play it. This is the only way I move to another game. There have to be other people playing it, who I am interested in playing games and socializing with.

Not all games in my community fit that criteria.

Oh yea, and the models have to look cool enough for me to want to play with them, that decides the army and models I end up playing with.
