If he thought of the big picture that is a bonus for him and his men and his ideas of how the guard should be fighting could be spread further.

You never raised the question of was there any medium/heavy infantry availible? The Cadogus 52nd sent to reinforce them were only availible because they had arrived on Jago late and therefore were the only other troops in position to go to Hinzerhaus long after the 1st had arrived there and discovered the blood pact forces there.

Their lives weren't wasted they protected the entire eastern flank of the Imperial army present allowing them time to redeploy and provided the war effort with information sufficient to shorten the war by 2-3 years saving considerably more than the 1000+ men lost during the siege.

Also as the first troops to advance on the position of which little was known about and the enemy forces present likewise it can be argued that they were on a recon mission and when the situation became apparent command made the choice to use the only unit in the area to hold the line in time for reinforcements to secure the situation.

I can understand the frustrations at the loss of so many men but Gaunts rank as a Colonel means he has to see the bigger picture of the war they are undertaking. To quote Godfather from Generation Kill he cant say "1st Recon don't do Windows"

Exactly, you can't blame Gaunt for getting emotional after losing half his regiment and his frikking eyeballs.

p.s. Generation Kill is awesome.

I sort of agree with your point about rank but he was trained as a commissar so it would be a bit odd for him i think.

If you had read Necropolis you'd realize how much of a "Look at the big picture and command the whole, not just the wanted" Kind of commander he is. He knows how to motivate his men, and also knows what it's like to lead from the front, unlike most Officers.

I have read Necropolis is thought it was good and it proved Gaunt had the gnads to take over large scale operations but being only an officer and not a commissar would mean different duties which he would find odd since he has been trained from childhood as a commissar.
I'm not sure what you mean by "look at the big picture and command the whole not just the wanted" so i can't respond to that.

No problem, I was expecting it. I had my hand in front of my face until I got to the "quick reply" at the bottom of the page

Good idea.
i never usually worry about spoilers unless they are detailed otherwise they're just teasers to me.
But if you haven't read the Gaunts Ghosts series i highly recommend it, it's one of my favorite series and by one of my favorite authors because of it.

Smart. I agree with purplefood below. There's 2 types of books in the Black Library: Gaunt's Ghosts and everything else.

Cool. My family likes to buy me books, so hopefully I can save a couple Bucks

So far I've read nightbringer and a thousand sons (both by sir graham mcneill). It'd be nice to get away from him

Well if you're going to read HH you should start at the beggining. Horus Rising and False Gods.

Actually, a thousand sons was an impulse buy. Glad I read it, but it was just a "hey, this is new! Must read!" sort of thing

They need to start making HH "omnibuses". There's just too many books. My friend has false gods, so I'll probably get horus rising myself.

I don't know. Horus Heresy covers have some awesome artwork so I wouldn't want to lose that in an Omnibus.
