And ailaros has just ignored the fact that if you are at max coherancy, your infantry is most likely out of cover which makes most Russ' more deadly. Max spacing also makes your units very unwieldy (meaning you have a much harder time moving or geting an effective volley from a squad, which as a guard player you should realise is all important otherwise they are just free KP.).

the fact that you can maximum space your infantry in turn 1 to avoid an alpha strike is rather moot because there are another 4 turns in the game. also, again with the cover, units bunched in cover, like MEQs or shooty terminators and such suffer greatly since a 4+ save is a damn sight worse than a 3+ or 2+.

Now I'm not gunna say that the Executioner is the only thing to take, but it is very effective against a wide range of targets. I wouldnt advise using it against light or medium infantry (despite the fact that it does kill them very dead) since they are usualy best handled by chimeras and guardsmen.

opponent "hah! take a void bomb from my void raven!" ..... bomb misses, scatters 12" onto Archon in transport..... transport explodes killing Archon..... me "dude, i think that just voided your warranty"

Against CSM I take a Demolisher with plasma sponsons. Don't worry about the range Chaos will usually come to you. I love Exterminators with triple heavy bolters vs Nids

That's kind of the problem. Whether they come to you or you go to them, being close is bad for a Leman Russ because that means being vulnerable to assaults and half-range meltaguns, which basically invalidate all the points you paid for that front/side 14/13. With other tanks that have 36"+ range, you can move when required to keep a much-needed distance between yourself and your enemies, forcing them to rely on long-range anti-tank (most typically autocannons/missile launchers/lascannons) where that 14/13 AV really pays off.

The only three I find viable are the LRBT the executioner and the demolisher. The other varients are either not effective enough or you can do the same job elsewhere in the armiy for less. I.E the hydra over the executioner.

When taking tanks I consider them how I would take infantry. The core of your army needs to be flexible and then add specialists as you need. So the LRBT is a great choice and then if I feel I need the extra firepower, I consider the other two. LRBT are like the metal versions of what an infantry squad should be. Good anti-tank (or transport for infantry) and good anti infantry. Neither excell but thats when you want to add those specialist anti tanks guns and anti infantry guns like heavy bolters, demo cannons, ect

Statistically, you will almost certainly die when assaulting a well-maintained fortress with a competent commander. You must strive to make your death useful.

Your foe is well equipped, well-trained, battle-hardened. He believes his gods are on his side. Let him believe what he will. We have the tanks on ours.
