I use them for the modelling opportunies and the whole 'feel' of using Chaos Elite troops. The whole army is so expensive and points are at a premium, it's tough to decide what to take and what to leave at home.
Sometimes I'll even field minimum 5 to field a lascannon and hold an objective in the backfield.

By 'hold' do you mean: 'not scoring'? Or maybe you left out they have an icon and you have incoming lesser daemons to 'actually' hold the objective?

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

I think I'd be more likely to field the 5 man/1 heavy weapon Chosen squad if you could use the CSM's point cost over the Havocs. As it is, 125 for a single Lascannon just seems like too big of a price tag.

Well, it could be worse.... like 140 points for 5 Pink MEQ's with a Blastmaster...
At least they won't run away and score .

This is how I use mine. They've been labelled as 'overkill' before, but I don't mind =) I think it's the Eldar player in me showing through - I love them that much that even when playing other armies, I can't shake the Eldar vibe
Seriously, my Chaos army is heavily Thousand Sons themed, so of course anti-tank weaponry is in short supply. Hence 5 Chosen, all carrying meltaguns, and with the Icon of Tzeentch in a Rhino fill the role pretty well!

Has there ever been a time where you wish you had an extra Flamer or two when you're outflanking them?

A. There is no such thing as Overkill. B. Please Read Point A. As to minigun762's comment... it's a personal preference issue.... I mean... he could have flamers out the tailpipe in the rest of the list... /shrug. But yea, just a little diversification can add a whole lot of flexibility without sacrificing their main focus. edit: smileys to indicate joking on the matter.

There is such a thing as overkill, particularly if you're not on a gov't payroll. Too much firepower spent killing one thing means less firepower to kill other things.
For example, take Melta Guns. Three is pretty much as many as you need with BS4. Better than to make the unit more flexible with Flamers or a Champion or something. Remember, the more the complicated the unit, the more resistant it is to AP3- fire.

You want something combbatty in the Dreadclaw.
As for my comments of Overkill, I forget an emocon in that post....ie: for fun, not in terms of maximizing productivity.

I rarely use them, but when I do:
5 Chosen, Icon (usually Chaos Glory), 4 Meltaguns, Champion - 150 pts / 185 if I bring the bonus of an extra Rhino for added coverage for the rest of the army
Why do I rarely use them, and when I do, bring them like this? Greater Summoned Daemon, that's why!
Albeit, this strategy is more for fun than it is competitive, but it can be a pretty nasty slap in the face when your chaos marine opponent infiltrates his cheap champion chosen squad within Melta range AND close proximity for a Greater Summoned Daemon. Death to the armor!

I like the idea of a greater daemon popping from chosen, but I don't like relying on my reserve rolls to work out twice in a row. It feels like too big of a gamble.
My biggest issue with chosen is that you are trading points and non scoring status for more weapons and infiltration. Is it really worth it?

Competitively? I think the answer relies on what kind of army you are playing against/what kind of game type it is.
Like Dreadnoughts, I see Chosen as a fun unit (terminators, raptors, and bikes as more of a reliable source of competition), that when used properly can help out in the long run, and if unlucky, can be a flat out waste.
Everything is a trade off these days, and for CSM, unless you play exactly perfect army lists, everything is a gamble as well!
