I read somewhere in this thread that OP plans to buy 2 pods. I'd go for 3 instead. You're forced to drop half (rounded up) in turn 1 and the rest goes in reserve. If you have 3 then you can drop 2 in turn one and reserve the third. That way you can at least focus some of your force. If you drop just one pod in turn one, the opponent can use his entire army to kill what was inside.

I agree with this. There are good ways to run BT, but a Drop Pod assault might not be one of them.

Yeah, as a BT player, im a BIG advocate of Rhino's especially since if you pay like the 5 points for a smoke launcher, EVERY hit against you will be a "Glancing" hit rather than a penetrating hit!

Since we are such a CC focused army, one turn when all you can do is stand and shoot either bolters or bolt pistols etc. and have an entire army shoot back at you, not a good idea!

But by all means, paint them as BT, run them as Vanilla

Yes, though Drop Pods and Devastators will require a bit of practice. It's a pretty hard way to play.

Actually practice isn't a bad idea, even outside of a game. The ability to judge distances accurately without the necessity of measuring is one of the skills of Warhammer 40k.
