Though this argument has it's place, the OP is simply asking us for some help with symbolic references. He's already at the halfway point, and at least he knows the ideology behind the tattoos that he wants.

Yes, it's a shame that some people don't understand the thought process behind my post, maybe if they took the time to actually read my other posts then they may see what i'm after? I already have a 3/4 sleeve so it's not a case of being 'ready' to get a tattoo, I love the art form and it's history i'm not getting anything to apear 'tough' or anything else, i'm getting more to help myself gain the perspective i want to see every day, and I do already have the general ideas of what I'm looking for, i was merely asking the people of Dakka to help me make sure I was obtaining the correct symbols for the meaning I wanted! I believe 3 times people have posted that i'm not ready to get ink if i'm asking complete strangers! why don't you read the entire thread before commenting? and then if you can't offer anything constructive then don't post at all please, some of my ink has a far deeper meaning to me and is something I can draw my own inner strength from every day and if you believe that something that works for me is silly or wrong? then fine that's your opinion, but if i ever meet you and tell you my story you may agree that anything that can make myself feel good and not suffer when remembering then that's a good thing, whether it's a tattoo I have or haircut or anything else in life that offers the same!

Because if you need someone else to tell you what to get (even if you have a "rough" idea), you shouldn't be getting a tattoo. If you have a rough idea of what you want, bring it to a tattoo artist and have them draw you something up, don't go to a wargaming forum.

We are offering something constructive. We're trying to save you money and save some poor tattoo artist from putting something on your body that a bunch of nerds on the internet (myself included) helped you decide on.

Since you have tattoos, you should be aware that you should get a tattoo for you, not for someone else and you should know better than to go to other people to figure out what you should get for you.

Save your money, take your time and figure it out with the artist.

Ah some people aren't getting this at all are they! Bunker i can see your point but cheesecat is pretty close to right! i'm just asking the question of people to get some differing opinions and ideas also unfortunately I have some rather unhelpful tattoo studios that means I would rather ask the 'nerds' on dakka, whom i've learnt quickly are actually a very intelligent bunch of friendly people from around the world who never hesitate to offer help no matter the forum, and seeing as this fact could lead to uncovering something I had not thought of, I can't believe this thread is going for so long to be honest, I thought the Dakkaites would accept my request and make sure I was on the right track for my design and then that's it, not look at the thread as if i'm 16 making the biggest mistake of my life! I value other people's opinions and that's all i'm asking for here, I can see where you're coming from but all i ask is for you to read the facts and ask me if you need clarification on why, i'll give it to you, this is my way to do my thing and while some (lots) have been humerous some have been legit trying to help me, and I appreciate it, more help than my local artist , Sorry if i've sounded pretty negative in my last couple of posts, but i'm just frustrated, i don't like negativity and i'm sorry if I haven't been clear on my original wishes.

In and of themselves, yes, they are insanely stupid. To a certain subculture, they have an almost religious significance. The bloody and painful act of getting a tattoo inscribed is, for all intents and purposes, a pagan ritual. You are immortalizing something, be it a hope, a dream, a dead relative, or some attribute that you aspire to.

In these cases, the actual tattoo is quite secondary.

Naturally, you'll have folks that just get tattooed because its cool, or because they're addicted to it- these can be equated to the Vegas marriage, or the 6th or 7th marriage. You either don't understand the ritual, or have come to love the pain, you sick motherfether.

Now, back to the serious business of inciting an inking. For protection, why not take the 2+ save? Done in a fanciful script, it could simultaneously announce your nerddom, and be utterly incomprehensible to anyone else.

For happiness, you'll need something more in keeping with your asian motif. Perhaps a sunrise, or another dragon. Or get an asian symbol for twenty put on a polyhedron to obscure the Natural 20 joke. Depending on how materialistic you are, having the yen (Japanese currency) or the Chinese frog with coins might do the trick.

You know, Bunker has a point. These are incredibly lame and generic suggestions. I revert to a modified version of Frazzled's stance- tattoo by committee is insanely stupid.

as lame and generic as they are in some cases, I now at least have some more insight, and that was originally what I was after, not a pat on the back or a wow you're so cool, it's not why i got my tattoo in the first place, I understand and accept that not everyone likes them or wants one, but with the reasoning behind my own that not everyone takes care to discover, I now have a more balanced understanding of my own beliefs, as I may have mentioned before it's a shame that some posters have only taken parts of the question and made a rash decision themselves about what is to me something quite serious and containing meaning for myself, I will even admit that years ago I too thought the act of permanently scarring yourself was vulgar and silly, that was until during deep reflection that I undrstood something else about them, that sometimes a permanent reminder mated with the cleansing pain of the act can offer you a kind of re-birth when faced daily with memories of an act not easily forgotten, so thank you too the posters that have given me ideas and knowledge as that was all i was asking for and to those who just want to push what they believe is stupid then I hope one day you understand, i'm not stupid, the act in itself for me is not stupid, my ideas are not stupid and the fact that it actually works for me is definately not stupid, now excuse me while I go and assemble tiny toy soldiers to do battle across an imaginary planet!.....again.....not stupid! :-)

WOW you don't get it do you? he isn't having people just tell him what to get he is asking for referance of symbology to represent what he wants. That dosen't mean he is going to run out and get whatever anyone tells him to. It means that he is doing some searching to find what he wants, it's the same as searching the internet or books for referances except if he did that he would probably get some more serious answers and woulden't have to deal with people like you who are contributing nothing to the conversation and instead are hampering it due to your personal beliefs.

I love how everyone likes to assume that the OP is just going to run out and get everything that has been suggested considering half of what has been suggested has been immature content that has nothing to do with the stated purpose of the OPs desired tattoo. I also love how people express their opinions as if they are absolutions, and better yet they are expressing them in a post where they aren't needed. If this was a post about the ethics of getting a tattoo then yes you all could say whatever you want. But I do not see any sign of that within this topic other than those of you who think you know all and insist on making a topic about symbolic referance into a post about wether or not the OP should do it. And to be honest the (IMHO) ignorant comments made by certain members throughout this topic have made me even prouder of my tattoos and my proffession, if they differintiate myself from all of you then even more reason to get them because that would be a sorry existance.

As he has been forced to say before and I'll make it big and bold so you all can see it. The OP has tattoos, he isn't some kid just looking into getting his first tattoo for the hell of it who is going to have something random thrown on.

To the OP it's clear that the majority of those who have responded to this have their heads closed off to anything other then what they believe and believe that they know all so I would use dakkas ignore button. They think they can speak for everyone in the world fine let them keep thinking that, just use what people who actually have any real knowledge of tattoos have said as I'm sure that many of these people have never even set foot inside a shop.

You could try and look into celtic or nordic runes, there are probably a few that represent something like you're looking for.
