Every tattoo removal I have ever seen has looked worse than the tattoo they got removed. + it's not cheap.

All it takes is the slightest bit of regret about it (Be it about what the tattoo is, where it is etc.) and it will annoy the feth out of you for the rest of your life. Why don't you learn to express yourself in a different way? Instead of in the form of an irreversible cliche.

The only cliché here is someone trying to force their personal beliefs onto someone else. YOU may not get why someone would want a tattoo and YOU may not have any inclination to get one but that does not mean that it is a bad thing to do if done smartly and for the right reasons. Impulsive tattoos aren't even bad they are just ill advised and we try to prevent people from getting them but in the end they are the responsibility of the owner and that is something that they will have to deal with just like every other choice they make in their lives. As far as finding a differant way of expressing himself you fail to realise that not every tattoo is about expressions, not every person who gets a tattoo is some kid who just wants attention. Tattoos have meaning.

Tattoos are memories. The portrait of my great grand parents on their wedding day that is tattooed onto my ribs is a reminder of 2 people who where a large part of my life and I would not be who I am without them. The tattoo that a mother got in the shop I work at of her little girl who was killed by a drunk driver is a memory not a form of expression. If you want to try and preach about something you need to make sure that you at least have understanding of it past the fact that they are SEMI perminant. Personal opinions is fine but don't try to force your beliefs onto someone else, especially when no one on this site or in this world has the right to say what is right or not for another person to do.

calm down. How exactly am I "forcing personal beliefs onto someone" or "preaching about something" by stating I don't understand why someone does something?

In any case after your answer, I'm still no nearer to understanding why. A memory can be kept in your head, a reminder can be kept anywhere. Why paint it on your body? Usually you only need a reminder for the stuff which isn't important. i.e. not stuff you'd want to put on your skin.

So you tell me to calm down then you say that something you need a reminder of isn't something important after I say I have a tattoo as a reminder of my great grand parents. So you want me to calm down yet you insult me? let me ask you something do you remember exactly what your great grand parents look like? are there things that you don't remember unless you see something that specifically reminds you of it? Unless you have photographic memory I highly doubt it.

I carry my Great Grand Parents with me so I can see them every day and think about them all the time, that women carries her child with her every day and so do thousands of other people who have something important that they want with them. Now if you can't understand something like that then I don't know what to say to you as I think you would never understand.

As for being preachy? You talk about something you obviously know nothing about to someone who already has tattoos like they where a little kid who didn't know any better. Then you put forth the idea that he should find a differant way to "express" himself, I have no doubt that the reason you say this is because it is something you woulden't do. Tell me what that is if not preachy?

Now if you genuinly wanted to try to understand why a person would want to get a tattoo you would simply ask why instead calling it a cliché and talking to the OP (who already has tattoos) as if he knows nothing about them or has no real reason to get one. And then you tell me that no one really has any reason to get one as if you speak for the entire human race saying that anything worth remembering can be put somewhere else. You know what yeah I could just carry a picture of my great grandparents in my wallet, but what if it's lost? What what if it is damaged or stolen? I tell you what I would love for you to tell what you just said to that mother.

If you really want to know about something then ask a question. Don't start insulting the people who actually know something about it.

I guess I've obviously hit a nerve with you. I'm not trying to insult anyone who has a tattoo. I just don't understand why anyone would want one. Your reading far too much into what I've said. Get over it.

If I had actually intended to make up a post which was insulting I would have gone with petty little remarks such as... "I don't know what to say to you as I think you would never understand." "you obviously know nothing... like a little kid who didn't know any better".

You may not be trying to do it but you're sure doing a great job of it. And I repreat if you want to understand something ask a question. And if you took my so called "petty little remarks" as insults then you need to look up what an insult is right alongside the definition of arrogance.

And just for referance that was an insult. Get over it.

My lord! I never expected this thread to get so heated! i'm sorry if even my question has triggered some latent emotion in people, I'm not making an impulsive decision at all, if I were I'd have the umbiguous skull with flames or a scorpion (my apologies to anyone who has these tatts!) i've already got a 3/4 sleeve with personal meaning about my life, surviving hardships (sexual assualt as a young teen, amogst other things) which helps remind me each day about how i've grown to be stronger and actually keep on going through life when it sometimes feels like everyone is untrustworthy! I have struggled for years to find my true self throughout some things no one should be party too, and now I have achieved what i started out to do, be happy within myself and put things behind me and remind myself that i am a very strong person who can overcome anything that comes my way, even if it's as small as someone annoying me on the road, I can always just let it slide and not sweat the small stuff, so that is what my tattoo means,if you look up the meaning of the japanese koi fish and the water dragon you'll se it's a true tale, the koi struggles through the waters up waterfalls through hardships top reach the golden gates where it is rewarded for it's patience perseverence and struggle by being turned into a majestic dragon who is both mystical and wise and can continue to instill the feelings of personal success within whoever deems it appropriate to get the powerful reminder inked onto their body, I feel that sometimes it takes more courage to put a part of your life out there for the world to see than not!
I was merely asking for some outside help when choosing a symbol for another peice of artwork to help me feel shielded and lucky, i'm still here on this earth and i intend to stay for a long time, my way of expressin is ink, please don't judge if it's not yours! if you don't need a reminder every now and again about things that mean a lot to you then you are a lucky man, but I challenge you not to look at a photograph of your parents ever again or flick through a childhood book that brings sweet memories flooding back!

now lets stop getting heated and celebrate the ancient artform and share some stories and images people! I appreciate everyone's comments either negative or positive we all have our perspective, but lets just try and enjoy the thread now eh!

Frazz, I take it you're referring to the stupidity of getting smurfs and not the actual act of the tatt aren't you? maybe I need a couple of smurfs then, just to let people know that they shouldn't take life too seriously! serious and personal on one arm and fun and carefree on the other?

Blokus, i'm not getting help getting a tatt, i'm asking for assistance in obtaining the correct symbology for what I want, it's no different to looking through books or bad tattoo sites, I just thought i'd see if the knowledgeable folks on Dakka could give me some insight! keep in mind my earlier posts on the matter, you will note i'm not a rash fool with permanent ink representing my coolness or toughness these are for me and have meaning about my life and this is the way I choose to express myself, not with my hair or piercings but with ink, if you met me, unless you knew, generally you wouldn't have an inkling that I had a tattoo, I am just trying to get some help finding the correct symbols for what I want, not asking for a design of a flaming skulll or something cliche
