Thanks for the encouragement guys! The project is really starting to come together IMO. Hard not to sit and play with it.....needs more arms! I'm thinking that the massive list I have noted earlier in the thread may be a bit too ambitious. Looking forward to having some paint on him next week!

As usual, a picture of my inspiration for the morning. Made a quick trip to the library and these selections should prove most excellent as "background noise".

A few more pics to demonstrate the level of customizability, if that's even a word.

Rawr, chaosy magic and tentacle porn!

Plz don't look at my uggo mutie face, it makes me self conscious and angry!

A demonstration of structural stability. The hard part with this pic was not getting the model to stay together, it was getting the stupid tweezers to actually grip one of the skull spikes on the torso cowl! In this photo the load bearing portion of the model structure is ONLY the single magnet at the waist join. As you can see, these buggers are really strong. That is a 60mm base filled with GS, Chaos Termie Lord base, termie lord legs, 9 magnets, and all the GS fills being help with a single disc less than 1/8 of an inch in diameter. I'm both surprised and happy!

Project has cost me $22.50 so far, not counting the price of tools and GS....which I would have purchased regardless. The only reason I even spent any money at all is because I had no workable leg options. I attempted a crafted lower torso, but it ended up looking terrible.

Was keeping a log of the actual man hours worked on this guy, but I lost track and gave up after 112:43. Please bear in mind that the VAST majority of that time was the learning process. I've never worked with GS til now and had to figure out how to make molds, casts, get a machined flat surface, and spent huge amounts of time making sure that the fit on each piece interferes with other pieces to the absolute minimum possible degree.

Any clue on where to size some tank treads that would be relatively proportional to the rest of the model? Never so much as opened an IG box.

learning process is always the biggest amount of timedevourer. i cant count how often i have pulled my creations apart...and i will do so again and again. as i tend to do new thing and don´t want to repeat myself... so if i learn something new its only the basics of the theme i can benefit from...

one suggestion? why dont you search for a nice avatar man? would want to put a face to the name...^^

Picture of the torso side join for the backpack adapter. More than any other part I've built, this one really helps to define the project.

Scoring the join surface. If you do this, be very very very careful. The blades I'm using are so sharp and thin that when (not if) I slip, I don't even feel them pass through the meat of my finger until the nerves are sliced. Very odd feeling, not painful but damn sure not pleasant. Fortunately I was a boy scout!!!!

The reason for doing this is simple. Increasing the surface area that an adhesive can bond to increases the strength of the bond. For example I did very deep scoring at the join surface of the feet/rock and then used a slow cure plastic cement that set overnight. Haven't tried cement on GS yet.

Decided to stick in the ear buds, put the Dark Knight soundtrack on and see what happened if I tried to come up with a back story for a specific pose. Again, first try at anything of this nature so I hope it doesn't suck too much. I have read a lot of complaints that home made fluff is really lame....C&C encouraged on this as well!!!!

Edit: Wow, freakish....the album just ended as I finished editing this...like literally as soon as I hit the submit button.

As the chilly dusk air caught in her throat, Joniza again checked the charge on her long las. It had been three weeks since the Black Legion began their assault on the fortified Cadian position. As the numbers of the defenders dwindled the commissar ordered the deployment of short range heavy weaponry in preparation for the inevitable surge that would attempt to breach their defenses. After all thought Jonzia, the infinitely damned legions of The Despoiler appeared limitless in both number and form. Only the iron discipline of her commanders and the unwavering loyalty to the commissar had kept the unit from breaking up until this point. From her position in the sniper nest, Jonzia watched the other guardsmen prepare heavy flamers and multi-melta's. Something about the sight of a heavy flamer pointed at the INSIDE of the massive stone gate made her feel sickened. Its intricately etched stone, never touched by human tools had proved a most effective bulwark against all enemies for hundreds of years.
Without warning a series of explosions began to hammer against the other side of the gate. Jonzia couldn't believe her ears, were the traitors actually trying to blast through stone that couldn't be dented with a meltagun? Her jaw went slack as a series of cracks began to appear in the surface of immeasurably old stonework. The staccato bursts of what had to be an entire squad of boltguns rang in Jonzia's ears. She was shocked beyond words to see the stone shatter and crumble under a barrage clearly fueled by the hatred directed at all faithful servants of the Golden Throne during these crusades.
Staring through the sights of her long las, Jonzia caught her breath at the sight of a massive figure rising through the smoke and dust. With a whine of bionics and the clacking of a well oiled automated bolt loader a form plucked from the darkest part of human imagination stomped forward. Flames spat towards the figure as guardsmen opened up with close range death, however the figure simply turned in one fluid motion. Jonzia was horrified to see a festering mass of organic fluid and bristling gun barrels where the left arm should have been. As a laser rangefinder played over the hapless guardsman futility attempting to harm the behemoth, there was a deafeningly loud burst of gunfire accompanied by a flash of white light.
Jonzia cried out as she was knocked to the floor by a concussive shock-wave. Scrambling to her feet, she saw the unnameable thing continue its inexorable march forward. Where there had been emplacements of multi-melta's and heavy flamers there was no longer anything save for smoke, craters, and an astounding amount of spent bolt casings. Lining up her shot was the work of a few moments, shortly followed by the crack of a precisely aimed head shot from the long las . As Jonzia pulled the trigger time seemed to slow. It was as if she could watch the las round creeping towards the nightmarish figure, still perfectly aligned with the neck join of its helmet.
In this brief instant Jonzia felt the attention of something far more ancient than herself snap into focus and she knew the true meaning of despair. With a flash of the cannons mounted to the thing's back Jonzia's las round ceased to exist. As she was blinded by the red light of the rangefinder bionics dripping from its head, she caught a glimpse of yellow caution stripes and the glint of gunmetal. She then ceased to exist as completely as the las round that never connected with its target.

Its not very impressive, seriously. I've got over 112 man hours invested in this project, if you include the learning process from cracking a tube of GS for the first time to the pics that you see. Doesn't leave much time to paint mass infantry. :(

Also thinking that with a red/bronze/black paintjob I can do a simple yet striking paintjob while still having the freedom to put individual legion or renegade chapter details on specific pieces. I can do god specific icons as part of the terrain. Thoughts?

I think you have the right idea and at least you are taking the time to personalize your army..One day it will be painted and fully field ready.

I like the Icon idea as it really will show people which of the 4 they follow!

Yep, I've been into 40k off and on for 16 years. I'm in no huge hurry to get to the gaming table. Honestly I enjoy the modeling more than any other part of the hobby.

Mostly working on bulking up the area's that need it. They will then be trimmed to fit, and once I've gotten a sculpting tool or some color shapers I'll apply a thin layer of GS and work the details into it. This also allows me to layer the GS instead of putting a blog on. Again, this should increase the structural stability of load bearing parts.

Not quite what I was expecting from the begining post, but a very interesting read. I'm still trying to decide if I think its a good idea or a crazy one. At the least its a better use of GW parts then my idea:

BTW, Id host your pics on dakka, alot from page one are not working.

Yes, I know the page 1 pics are spotty. Most of them were absolutely terrible and focused more on the close up of the experimentation for the first few nights of this project. Not missing anything other than a few really really goofy looking parts.

Is that a termagent skeleton built out of sprue chunks?

Its a termasprue of Hive Fleet Injection Mold. And he is finished. Its a really slow side project just to make some GW guy go "Wait a minute....". It is 100% GW product, so totally tourny legal (in theory).

Well I'm officially calling a halt to the production of new parts....at least for the time being. Doing the final trim on everything now, next will be a thin layer of GS and some VERY small attempts at detailing. Mostly I will be looking to get a fairly smooth finish on the GS skin covering the joins. No more pics til everything is cleaned up and primed!

I could do this so much faster, and get much more dynamic results from using pinning on the arm construction and leaving the shoulder join mag'd. Other than that, I'm very happy with the construction so far.

Literally every 5 minutes when I am working "man, if I pinned it like this I could to this....." pops into my head. Le sigh...challenge set for myself is limiting me.

Next batch of arms/terrain maybe.

I am stress testing the model for simulated falls off a standard height table. If it breaks, I fix it only stronger. I figure if they can survive this, then the model will be sturdy enough to use. Magnets function as "break away zones", so aside from some paint chipping (hello clear varnish spray) this thing should be as strong or stronger than any GW model without pins.

I'm buying a vise and drill as soon as this tedious project is finished!!!!! lol

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And a few pics. Still working on layering GS and smoothing out the area's around the joins. The tabard in the middle isn't glued, just has a GS join curing. Open to suggestions on that area of the model. Coming together nicely imo. Need to get as much as possible done in the next 3 hours since my shawty is flying in today. Something tells me I'm not gonna be doing much modeling the next few days.

Pictured next to a magnetized chaos lord I built about 6 months ago....I'm a slow painter. I was thrilled to see that my model is indeed proportionally about 4 or 5 inches taller than the other one. Edit: By this I mean the bottom of the chin in relation to the top of the terminator cowl. IMO the GW terminator head looks a little oversized.

And yes, I really like the big guns.

The whole model along with 3 terrain choices being supported by the single pair of magnets at the waist socket.

Part of my highly technical testing method is to throw it against the wall. Literally.
