The swarmlord is an INDIVIDUAL in an army of mindless monsters. It basically embodies the Hive Mind in every possible way. It is the peak of the tyranid's genetic engineering, and there can only ever be ONE swarmlord. When he dies in battle (which probably doesn't happen unless marneus calgar is around), it takes an extreme amount of energy to revive him, and at that point, the battle is lost anyway.
The Swarmlord is probably the most ridiculous character in the entire game. It's even worse than taking a daemon primarch (which is an APOC thing, iirc). The simple possibility of ever encountering him is ludicrous He should be an apoc thing.
That is why I dislike the new Nid book. It's like they completely ignored what the 4th ed writers and theme of the tyranid race altogether.
However I think Chaos still tops it as the worst. It's little more than a backwards SM army with cult troopers now.
Best one I would dare say is the Space Wolves and Orks. Plenty of customization, keeping the original feel of it (especailly the wolves. When i first read it I actually forgot they were still space marines until I saw the tanks), and just overall characterful (for HQ choices, Dreadnought for an HQ, Wolf-riding Space Marines, and tons of army customization by using Logan Grimnar on the Wolves side. Biker Armies, Nob Biker armies, Dread Mobz, Green Tide, and other unique armies for the Orks).
When going into context, I thought the Eldar was actually pretty well written at the time. It kept most of the old stuff and managed to blend the Craftworld Book into it. It wasnt a perfect blend but good enough, and most of the updates in the book were understandable and not too gimmicky (namely, I felt all of the Avatar's upgrades from the 2nd ed was well deserved as well as the Avenger options). However with time marching on it's really showing it's age. Necron's I'm iffy on. While they do have some of the more unique stuff (and still do) I really felt it was out of place to actually put the physical manifestations of their gods on the field. Khorne never came to the battle field, neither did the Primarchs or the Emperor, or any of the high lords of Terra. Even the Avatar of Khaine is just that, an Avatar, so it was more of a mood whiplash for me. Otherwise I quite like it, it managed to hold itself together and not be completely unplayable (compared to the Tau and Inquisition anyways, especially the Tau since they already got an update on Necrons and still seem to do worse than them).

Deathleaper really isnt useless - although not as a close combat killer. His -D3 leadership is killer for psykers - making eldrad Ld 7 - 9 dramatically increases his chances of failing psychic powers. And who doesnt like that?
Especially since they nerfed SitW....such a *&"££$ stupid FAQ ruling that was...

Apart from the unnecessary 'fex up pointing, it is a well written book.
Not as much love as IG got, but its stilla book that can be very competitive - it just requires a lot more thinking about. WEll, unless you have 9 hiveguard, I only have rhinos and you penetrate with EVERY hit....and you hit 5 or 6 times out of 6 with each squad. Not bitter me, not bitter at all

No need to worry about that, Old One Eye sucks.
Jokes aside, the only gripe I have with the Tyranid codex is actually Deathleaper. I like him, I even like using him (though he's usually replaced by good ol' Doomy these days) but after all this fluff they build around him of being a genius and a super killer, they make him Instinctive: Lurk, thus shattering ALL of the fluff they built around him. You want your Deathleaper to run in and assassinate things like he does in fluff? Not unless he's in synapse! Dumb.

Kingdom Death Fanatic. Dark Eldar: Kabal of the Fragile Breath. Dark Elves: Allegiance to the Black Crown. Also, Masons, Cygnar, and Legion of Everblight. All unnamed.

Holy gak that is an awesome username. Please tell me your army is called Kabal of the Fragile Breath. Morathi's Darkest Sin has some competition here for best handle, I think. |

Competitiveness is only one aspect of a good book. Style of play and fluffy units is also part of it, the former of which the Tyranids seems to be deviating from.

Style of play? well given that nidzilla has finally been put to rest and swarms of troops are now being used I would say "style of play" has swung more back in line with what most people would regard as "true" tyranids.

Nidzilla only got put down by the fact that DEs now eat them like mad. Not exactly solved by the codex itself. Plus there are now at least 5 new MCs occupying various FoC slots. That's hardly trying to go back to the swarm thing.

Huh? Nidzilla was put down way before DE, as its too easy to kill them - it was waning at the end of their 4th ed codex. Its just the new one REALLY discourages nidzilla with no cheap big bugs.
I never said there werent big bugs: just that you dont see 7 in a 1500 point game any longer.

Seriously? Nidzilla was over when carnifexes got nerfed straight into the ground. Have you read the Tyranid codex?

God yes, I've noticed. Fexes used to really have something going for them. Now you can take a Trygon Prime for nominally more, get a synapse, and a deep striker. I see no reason why everyone wouldn't just one over a fex.
Fexes could have easily been....120, maybe 150 points. NO. They doubled in points! I see no reason to even buy the kit for anything other than tervigon conversions...

I have 4000 points of Nids, over 2000 of that are non-fex MCs. I've played them since 3rd ed. Hell if Fexes are gone, Nidzilla still exists. Except that instead of massing fexes and tyrants, it's turned into massing Tervigons, Tyrannofexes and Trygons. Then there's the Swarmlord too. To top it off, you have Warriors as Troops now, which is much better than using the old "two Ripper Brood" way of getting past the 2 troops minimum in the last codex for Nidzilla.
Or better yet, take two min-squads of gaunts and now you get MCs for troops.

I think DE and Orks Codex are amazing.
The CSM its an abomination, and a Codex to forget when they make the next one.

I am really praying the next SM codex is gonna be CSM. However DA or Templar might get the update due to being even older (and DA being effectively obsolete now).
