Nova this upcoming year will be an 8 game, 2 day event.
Edit: I should correct that, it was this past year too (Or was it 7? I didn't make day 2), although a different format from the one projected for the upcoming year.

8 games in two days is a bit much, even if I was playing with no one but my best friends and had a fresh keg.
You fellas enjoy.

My point is not nullified.
Ard Boyz starts out on a more or less National level, but still does not have complete coverage. Any other event does not have the same coverage.
Most single weekend events tend to be regional with the exception of what amounts to a "Pro" element that hit the such events like Nova. Many of these "pro" players only come out for tournaments, and do not play on a local level.
You can see the same kind of thing with any tournamemted game, Darts, Bowling, Pool, Magic, Scrabble, Monopoly..... The biggest difference with Warhammer/40k tourneys is that there is no "cash" payout.

Of all the races of the universe the Squats have the longest memories and the shortest tempers. They are uncouth, unpredictably violent, and frequently drunk. Overall, I'm glad they're on our side!

Actually, everyone I know who travels for major events is also pretty active in their own local scene. When people care enough to pay out significant sums to fly to, say, Adepticon, it's because they really like the game.
There is no "pro" element to 40k; there are just some of us who are fortunate enough (and obsessed enough?) to be able to hit a few of the larger events around the country (or world, in some people's cases).

How about Well-off enough? Travel costs, and not just in money... time and job also factors.

Well I sure hope it's not canceled. This will be my first year with an actual 2500 point army, and I'd hate for this year to be the year it stops :(

It's not cancelled. No one at GW has said it's cancelled, quite the contrary, they've said that they are continuing 'Ardboyz.

Actually there's $2,000 in cash payout @ the nova invitational this year.
Ard Boyz lacks enough rounds at any event to be competitively evaluative. That a lot of people pljay subsequently becomes irrelevant. If anything it harms the integrity. For pure competitiveness you'd have to have 8 players per tourney set at each and every level until there were only 8 still standing in each regional section for the finals.
This is why events that by design pare down to a single undefeated winner are naturally more meaningful and more competitive, I.e. battle for salvation, bugeater, Nova, AdeptiCon, etc. It's also why an event with the same format that draws from the top two of each of these and many other major events country wide, aka the NOVA Invitational, is a much stronger evaluator than an are boys that no longer goes national for the final and that doesn't have enough rounds to properly eval a winner.
Ard boyz is basically as hulk put it. It's a good marketing tool, a chance to play some games and a chance to win a new army.

I was fortunate enough to eek out an invite and I am in no way well off (not poor but not well off either) and I still plan on going. I 'm really lucky also that my wife likes D.C. and the event is so far off I can still get good price tickets/plan my vacation around it. I dont consider myself pro by any means but it would be cool to test my skills against people that travel around the country, Dash and I have always butted heads and it would be great to finnaly play him. It's also pretty cool (not saying I could ever win an event like this) that I could pay for the trip with the winnings. On top of all this like Janthkin said I really like this game/hobby and I'm a little obsessed

@Helgrenze and Grimgob
Yeah me two! I am not well off by any stretch of the imagination. Unlike Grimgob, I am borderline poor! haha, I have been in the process of starting a company for the past 1.5 years and have been broke as gak.
The reason I say that is I still get out to events. You go if it means enough to you, just like anything in life. It's not about being rich, it's about wanting it bad enough that you find a way to make it work.
Haha, I guess that means I am in the obsessed category! Whether that makes me dedicated or lame I leave for you all to decide =)
@poontangler
Go for it! Ard Boyz is good fun and it gets really exciting, especially with all the big prizes to be had.

@Helgrenze
It’s more about priorities than money. AdeptiCon, for instance certainly can be an expensive weekend but at the same time it can also be a very affordable weekend. It depends on how you are willing to travel, First Class, Coach, or Stowaway. Splitting a room 4 ways, eating out of a cooler of food in your hotel room for the majority of your meals, bringing an air mattress and finding floor space, helping out before hand with aspects of the convention, being there to help unload, setup, and tear down, working a few shifts of the convention, building some awesome terrain, or working the oddball shifts walking around the venue picking up and resetting tables etc... As an event organizer, one thing we are always in need of is good quality “LABOR”. If someone is willing to barter skills, talent and time events can be very affordable.

Ard Boyz is definitely worth it. The last round, well... not so much. I am not sure why but the prizes for the last round are always terrible. Anyone else remember the 1st year of Ard Boyz? Top prize was a 3000 point Red Scorpions army from Forgeworld! What ever happened to great prize support!? Unless the last round was being held near me I doubt I would go. Then again I missed the last 3 years of Ard Boyz in a row due to social "obligations" so I haven't had much to worry about!
