I can't vouch for Strategies, but Imperial Hobbies is excellent. My problem is that The Metrotown GW was so convenient for me, living just a few blocks away.

My local GW just closed to, although no warning. they were in a westfield shopping centre and the rent just became to much. With a battle bunker and a second small store (not to mention the 5 or so independant stockists i happened to come across!) within a half hours drive of thier old store, i don't think they'll bother opening up somewhere else....

Have you no stand alone hobby stores in Canada or elsewhere? In my present locale, we have what GW calls a Rogue Trader store, it sells other things like comics and other game products as well as GW stuff. We play there as it has the space for us to do so. The biggest problem with GW stores is their need to pay rent in overpriced locations like Malls.

Amen. Darren'll do right by you, and the crowd that frequents the place is great. Best of all, painted minis are the unspoken standard. If you were a regular and brought unpainted minis, you'd get a very friendly hard time for it.
Man, I miss that place...

Pardon the Necro but this thread is very deserving of a heads-up.
Strategies is indeed a great games store but if you live South of the Fraser (a.k.a.: Surrey, Cloverdale or White Rock) there's a great game store at the corner of King George Highway and 24th. It's called YourGoGames ( www.yourgogames.ca). Their schedule is open not only to table-top games, like 40k or Malifaux, but to all board games depending on the days.
In total they have 6 tables: three 4 foot square tables and 3 6x4 foot tables. Wednesdays are open game and painting nights but you typically always have a couple 40k players showing up. The big 40k is Sundays, from 12pm till 5pm, where 3 to 8 players typically show up.
Since Thor's Hangout and the Strawberry Hill GW store closed the store has gained a lot of new players.
I realise that this store may be far if you're mostly bussing around the Lower Mainland but it's another store to know about and it's got a thriving community.

Maybe they could stay open if they had more than 3 games on the shelves. It's silly. The store should be called Warhammer Workshop of the Ring. Why can't they sell Fantasy Flight games and other games systems as well? No one really cares about Lord of the Rings that much anymore. There is a reason they stopped selling those miniatures in the early 90s to begin with. I blame GW for most of my favorite independent retail stores closing. In fact, every single independent retail store that I used to buy my Warhammer stuff from has closed since Lord of the Rings came out. So I say, "DIE! DIE AND SUFFER BEFORE DEATH!". Let us see a resurrection of Independent retailers who offer a wide selection of games and miniature ranges and maybe even >gasp< comics and geeky sci fi stuff. Besides, the GW online store is a far better resource for GW products. Die slowly and painfully, GW retail stores. GW retail stores put so many people like you and me who had dreams to open their own stores and live a decent and enjoyable life back into day jobs! I know a few of those poor sods personally.
Fakk, I need a picture and quote of the Fury from MGS3 for a sig. cuz every time I post, I feel my aura burst into black flames. FEEL MY RAGE!!!

I am The Fury. The flames of my rage will incinerate you. I came back from space. As I returned, I had one vision. The world set ablaze. And do you know what I saw there? (he aims his flamethrower upwards and incinerates a group of bats) Fury! A great and terrible Fury at being alive. Now you're going to feel the scorching heat of that horrible blackness. |

Wow, could they have found anywhere less convenient to get to? A 20 minute walk, uphill, from the Skytrain and away from all the main driving routes.

Before this thread, which I never expected to see on the front page again ever, gets nuked let me point out that there are two buses which lead to about a block and a half down-hill of the store. The 106 and the 112 along Kingsway and the 129 along Salisbury Ave. So its not absolutely terrible, just generally not convenient if you're stuck with TransLink.

Good to know there are some buses, but not at all useful for me if either I'm heading from work or home. Looks like the trek to the North Shore remains far more convenient for me, although I can't drop in there after work like I could with Metrotown.

I doubt I'll ever make it to the new GW store, too far out of the way considering I live in White Rock.
If you're South of the Fraser, Langley is now the gaming mecca what with Gamestars and Pastime Sports both offering a good gaming environment. I'd give Gamestars the edge considering all their GW items are at US prices or less and they have more tables.

For what it's worth, still waiting for our "new" GW store to replace the HQ Canada store in Oakville. One year after the HQ Bunker closing down, the Burlington store closed as well and no replacements yet. Guess GW doesn't like Southern Ontario.
So have you guys in Vancouver got your GW store replacement yet?

Gamestars in Langley is a amazing store I have played at it every Friday night for the last two months. Pastime is now running a league and 40k Seems to be on the rise out here south of the Fraser. We have tons of new people playing and Sundays are the day to go to Pastimes for some good 40k or fantasy games. I highly recommend these locations the owners are great and the staff friendly. as for the new Games Workshop store it isn't open yet but at least they have a location.
