^ imho - kit bashing or scratchbuilding is something you build using your imagination & getting your hands dirty so to speak.....& it's something you can be proud of.

Btw: here's my 'new' Whirlwind with some paint...not done yet, but thus far it took me 2hrs to build from scratch

That can be said of all modelling.

The point is that the terms are not interchangable. They denote very different methods of achieving a finished model.

A "scratch build" refers to taking raw materials and fashioning them into some object literally from scratch.

If you take parts from one or more kits and add them together (even if you add other converted/built parts) it isn't a "scratch build", though it is both a "conversion" AND a "kit-bash".

I think it is a matter of recognizing the terminology we are using as modelers; especially in a forum about such, and in particular when naming threads or identifying models, etc.

Nothing I have said is an attack on anyone's work or results, in fact the stuff in this thread is top shelf, but more I was referring to how using certain terminology to describe certain builds can be misleading.

^ good point......as you can see all the models I've displayed here are indeed scratchbuilds, but I did use some parts off kits that I got from a fellow gamer......I still consider my builds to be scratchbuilds - 95% raw materials 5% kit parts

My Whirlwind is however 100% raw materials & so to is all 3 of my drop pods

This may be a conversion and not a scratchbuild to some of you. This is my Land Raider I built in the second edition days when the Rogue Trader kit was out of production and there was no new model to replace it yet, I designed it after an Epic scale Raider and it's built from plasticard with Leman Russ and Predator parts glued on

am i guessing right here that the shown landspeeder is a plastic one and your in the making of a scratchbuild one? that would be cool, as then it would be possible to built and convert one for my IG army as a speedbuggy...

and where did you get the templates from? and how on earth are you so damn quick with these builds? i worked ages on my still not finished LR and although i used plasticcard it was very hard for me to work with the templates...

consider me deeply puzzled^^

^ thanx folks.....I would put more detail into these builds, but I don't have a bunch of Off-time....I restore old vehicles & build Hotrods & KUSTOM cars for a living & usually end a days work @ 9pm...afterwhich I get abit of OFF-time.....

Well it's almost 12pm over here & this is where my scratchbuild Land Speeder is now.....& Yes the black Land Speeder is a friend's which I only used to get measurements off of.......I also got a couple of bits & pieces from him to make the build abit easier....keep watching as I'll be adding paint in the next couple of days

i am all for bigger vehicles in 40k as i think it is a major flaw taht all tanks and stuff are not really up to scale with the figs...i can rather live with non truescale marines than looking at small leman russes that look like they where made for an entirely different scale...

are this by the way nidparts for antenas on the LS? nice idea^^

vik, who looks forward to more better pics at the weekend^^

^ so they are found them in my friend's box of parts & thought it would look 'different' on a LS...LOL!

I try & build my stuff to a measured point & then like adding my own twist to things.....Just look @ my Space Wolf colour scheme..Metallic light Blue

Playing yet another game on Saturday, so I wanna get these 2 ( Whirlwind & LS )rolling into battle a.s.a.p.

SpDDmN wrote:Reason why I'm building such alot of scratch built vehicles is the fact that the real thing costs more than an arm & a leg over here.....eg: normal Land Raider = £60 ( when converted from our Rand currentcy )

Either that or we have to resort to scavenging items from people who are no longer interested in their goods and sell off their armies, prices really are ridiculous and finding any stores that sell at good prices is a pure nightmare

Wow Brotherjulian, I really like that, it's almost spot on with some of the pre-heresy LRs in the Horus Heresy Collected Visions (HH CCG artwork) book! You've got some precognition going there!
