I'd played role playing games since I was 12 y.o. and had gotten into using and painting minis for our local D&D game. A buddy of mine introduced me to 40K and I was not overly into it. I then blew my knee out in varsity soccer and had a lot of time on my hands. My buddy showed me this game called Warhammer 40K and all the cool models one could build and paint. I was then hooked. I played consistently from 1989 until 1998 when 3rd edition was released. I thought is was utter garbage and put my stuff away until early 2001 when I really wanted to get back into the game. I've been playing fairly regular ever since.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Awesome stories guys. It seems like we can break down our intro to 40k in several ways:

1.) Exposure from media outside of tablestop: Video games, books, etc

2.) Peer group: A friend, colleague, or significant other introduces the idea to you.

3.) Plain ol just walked in to see what's up

After being thrown out of the Galactic Legion for 'crimes to numerous to be named here' i found myself down on my luck and with much spare time on my hands. Having amassed a fortune prior to my hasty departure from the Legion kept me from having to seek work but i was getting bored quickly.
I conspired to find a hobby. I travelled far and wide across the green lands of the England-Wales border and even trying roaming as a hobby (nor worth it) i eventually found myself beset by rogues. They attacked and knocked me unconscious. I awoke in a strange shop being tended to by a short man with a long beard. The shop wall were adorned with many boxes boasting colourful and exotic figures fighting terrible battles.

I inquired to the nature of the shop and with a great booming voice unsuited to his stature he claimed the shop as the ancestral territory of Games of Workshop. Games of Workshop created heroes and villains to carry on the saga of Warhammer 40,000 and soon i became interested in this saga and its origins. Eventually i accepted the shop master's offer to join him and his fellows in the continuation of the saga and having chosen the might "Space Wolves" as my champion i set out to build a great force that would contend with any that opposed it. I find myself here now, at this present time, fighting the fight, whether it is good or bad, shuffling everyday except Fridays... Fridays are for getting down on...

NOTE:This may or may not be an exaggeration of events that may or may not have happened...

4.) And in the case of Purplefood: Probably bludgeoned by the GW mafia and dumped in the one of their stores. =)

Actions define a person.

I had been looking for Mage Knight opponents back in late 2001, when I was 13. My friend introduced me to his friends, who were all playing Warhammer 40,000. The minis were cool, and I recognized the Land Speeder from earlier that year - two kids had been playing a WH40k game in the school cafeteria during a dance or something.

I remember getting my first box of WH40k minis that fall. They were Eldar Dire Avengers, so chosen because they looked nifty. They were pricey for me at the time at 31 dollars for a box of 10. I remember getting them home and being shocked that they were proper models like the airplane kits I'd built and painted earlier in my life. I also had difficulty getting the metal heads to stay attached when I was using the plastic glue. I was also a little put off when I found out you couldn't mix and match different units from different armies, as my experience with miniatures wargaming to that point had consisted entirely of Mage Knight and nothing else. I won't even go into the whole combo of lack of primer and enamel paint that I tortured my miniatures with.

But I learned.

An preview article for StarCraft 2 that pointed out how GW stole their idea from Blizzard , actually the article talked about how Blizzard was 'inspired' by the Space Marines, Eldar and Tyranids when they created the Terrans, Protoss and Zerg. It detailed some of the history of 40K, which piqued my interest and I eventually stumbled upon this site. I hung around for while learning about the game and the fluff, and end up buying AOBR.

interested in plamo/gunpla/plastic models/toy soldiers/etc. all my life.

Tried getting into 40k when I was in middle school. No one to play with. Quit. I had no clue what I was doing at the time.

Fastforward 6'ish years. I was in University. Played Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War II. Got interested in the fluff again. Leading to being interested in the TT game, and hobby. This time I did my proper research, created a nice armylist for my army before I built and painted all of it, as well as found hobby centers to play at etc. I now have 1,500 points of fully painted Eldar ready to field at any time.

I have "droughts" with the hobby though. The last 6 months I've been so busy with work I didn't touch the hobby at all. I just had my first game/s since the beginning of the year on last Saturday.

What 'bout my star?~*
