Sorry Ive been gone. With the family and spending as much time as i can with them before i have to head back to uni.
Capitansolstice wrote:I think what I would do would to get a sculpting tool, or piece of wire, and wet the GS
make it nice and thin and drape it over the shoulders, pulling the corners to the front of the neck
then I would think about where the natural stress points were and crease it there, and give it more wrinkles. Then add a hood and sleeves ect.
The only reason that it looks a bit off is that it isnt wrinkled in the right spots (I think)
I shouldn't be talking because I cant sculpt gs at all!

Also their cloaks should fall straight down because of gravity, and unless they show movement, or their hair is blown then their cloaks should be stiff-ish
I got some sculpting tools as well as wetting the GS. IVe been working on trying to get the natural creases and the wrinkles right. Hoods and sleeves are another issue
I never though about gravity and the movement they've moving and how that would effect the cloak. Good idea

Thank you, Im away from alot of the force due to uni but with winter break just around the corner im hoping i'll be able to grab a few and get some work done. Stay tuned
Centurionpainting wrote:I bought the maxmini commando heads also. They are WAY out of scale for Cadian bodies. I think you have the right idea to elevate the head a little bit. I tried to do that but it still looks off.
Your right, the scale of the heads does feel off. What i did was i bulked the cloaks around the head and made it look as if the cloak was covering alot of the scale to make the head seem more in tune with the model and the body. The heads are a pain in the though. im thinking these berets will be my scouts / vets. Not sure if i'd buy them again.

Your right though, those feral heads suit tanith guardsmen perfectly! i might need to order more

So this thanksgiving day weekend, after the turkey had been eatten and the family had all left, i set about gathering supplies to start on a new mini project. Deciding that a tool case wouldnt do for my tanith i searched the internet for a cheaper case and came back to dakka only to find this thread that i had seen over the summer but never bookmarked:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/362407.page
In it, it described how to build a 19$ Plano Carrying case capable of carrying "about 180 standard size figures in it's 3 levels. "
I got mine to hold 180 but wanting to proceed carefully i only cut out 83 holes before i took the pictures. Due to not having my 40k models on me i was unsure of the size and if the models would fit in them. I was skeptical if it would work but see for yourself. It fits and it fits prefectly. Next time im at wal mart im getting another 2 or 3
I wanted my tanith to have a protective case because there my favorite army and i want to keep my hard work safe. The Tanith (as well as the Padrus and Phantine) are my special project right now. For the Tau, Ive decided that until im done with the tanith they can keep their tool box

The trays after:
Final pictures:
Final Thoughts
Right, so my final thoughts on the matter.
1) The method of making the holes by the copper tubing and twisting till it popped out doesnt work well and takes HOURS! My grandpa (a engineer for 20+ years) suggested a new method. So what you do is Take the copper tubes and place them where you want the hole to go. Turn the foam upside down and take a hammer to the area around where the copper tube is. The foam will come out in a natural circle each time with very little effort. It literally took me a hour using the method in the post above and 30 mins for my second tray using my grandpa's method.
2) dispite the look of the holes seeming too small for your standard models , THEY DO INDEED FIT! It might not look that way but it is. Its a beautiful sight really
3) Following the tutorial provides does a great deal of justice to making the case but alot of it is trial and error. It took me 2 hours to make my first one. I believe i could crank another out in an hour for my next one. The work does get repetivie so have some music, TV, ect going on to distract you.
4) Its a very easy project and i highly recommand it to anyone looking for a good case for your models that you want to protect

So This post is my many many thanks to the following peoples: wonkobaggins , North101 , InquisitorMack
Thanks to these dakka members i was able to complete my custom Storm trooper squad. The models are cadians with valk pilots heads. Im torn between using them as Phantine Skyborne vets (already covered by Elysian FW models) or just =I= Stormies support. Its still a toss up but in the end i might just use them as Phantine Skyborne too :p

Im now back at Uni and im starting again on my tanith. While i was away on break i managed to get a case and set up the main force in their new home (minus the valk) and set about stripping a few more models to be prepared for GS work and getting there cloaks. As for the other models. once i get back and with fresh supplies of glue and GS i hope to finish up my battleforce and get it on the table ready to go! Keep checking back, alot of updates are gonna be incoming
First up is the pictures of the main sections of the army in their case

Sigh,
This morning i woke up to a disaster. On my living room near my modeling table lay all my supplies, broken models, and to top it off a broken and heavy picture frame that my grandmother had given me. Ive spent most of the evening cleaning it up and the downstairs is looking better.
However, there were battle scars. The GW box that held my battleforce took a direct hit from the falling picture frame (AP1 hit ) and pretty much went straight through the box. So far i think ive recovered alot of the pieces to the battle force but the spures are pretty broken so im hoping im not missing anything. The pictures dont show it well but the cut is direct and is two seperate pieces now. I just balanced it enough to get it looking like it use to.
This semester has been really tough and my time to model for 40k has gotten none existant. Im hoping to get some more work done eventually but im not sure that'll be. Till then, post and say hello, whats new in your world and keep checking back. Hopefully i'll get a update in soon.

It wasnt fun to clean up, or come downstairs in the morning to find it all laying there everywhere.
I suspect gravity was the key culprit in this instance but im not 100% sure. It had been there only 48 hours

Thanks Rabid Ferret Im trying to get better with my greenstuff work and alot of the hold up so far is school and papers. Im hoping to have a real update soon. As for the Phantine, Ive had the idea for a while now, but the ideas and the cost of collecting all the pilots heads put me off. It was thanks to Dakka that i was able to get them made. I knew the cockpit looked different from the standard model, but the airframe is unmistakably a 52.
The B-52's longevity never ceases to amaze me. The only original parts on planes still in service is the airframe itself, everything else has been replaced and upgraded. Most planes are older than the flight crews that fly them. It may not happen often, but every once and a while someone designs an aircraft that's so close to perfect it's damn hard to replace.
The air force and army might not be flying them anymore, but there are still tons of UH-1 Hueys in service out there. I love the sound of those big fat rotor blades...

@ Nowlan:
The B-52 is one of my all time favorite aircraft, ranking right up there with the Mc Donald Dogulas F-4 Phantom and A-6 Intruder. Vietname era aircraft are my forte but i can do WWII - > to Modern fairly well and be right 95% of the time. In my room alone i got 4 differnt pictures of aircraft and helicopters. My friend wants to give me his demovtivational poster with a M1A1 tank on it but i still havent gone to pick it up
What i have planned for later on:
(Gaint Disclaimer: I am no way shape or form a anime person but i felt the design is what counted not the show [How-ever good it is ] in itself)
I was watching the show the other night and i noticed how the cloak and the design was very spot on for a Tanith sniper. Taking note of the picture, i noticed how the cloak seems to sit naturally on her body which i could add to my own GS work (as noted by Capitansolstice ) when i get back to it. For those in the know, the show is Full Metal Alchimist. Since i do have a few more female heads left, im gonna try my best to make a Lt. Hawkeye as close to the picture as I can. For this project im hoping to get as close as possible to the picture, minus sleeves, no matter which way i look at it shes probably gonna have sleeves. Anyway I think this is what i need to get me back into modeling, something small that i can take at stages and not look at the whole box of models waiting to be assembled here at my desk
We'll see how it turns out.

So dakka i return and have nothing to show for it I swear i will get back to the female sniper one day
but i come with a question for the community:
Since im off at uni, and a good portion of my 2000+ IG is back home, ive been working within my constrants and playing (When i get the chance) 750 point games. My list looks roughly like this:
1 LC (Counts as Inquistor)
1 CCS
Marbo (Death cult assassin counts as)
1 Platoon of 20 with Heavy weapons x1 +2 Commies (1 commie, 1 counts as "Inquistor")
1 Vet squad
Scout Sentinal with lascannon
Its a Theme'd list and Ive been using my characters that can be found all over this forum. What i do is 1 of 2 things when i have the points.
I ethier call the Inquistor as a counts as Company commander and the 4 other members are his / her henchman or just run him / her alone and count as as LC. Lately, with the release of the space wolves Cyberwolf ive been looking at it and seeing a chance for a unit ive never used before :the bodyguard for the CCS.
The old RT Gyrinx models are really cool for familiars but the ability to find them is not something i want to take the time to do and track one down. Instead, looking at the new space wolves wolfs, i see potenetial to use the cyberwolf as a familiar for my Inquistor leading her / his Detachment of IG troopers.
I had two inquistors im using at the moment, Adrasita from DOW:II retribution (own conversion) and a DH character my group came up with: Inquistor Umarus. Im not sure which one will be getting the Familiar but i think i could make ether of them work within the fluff.
Fluff wise, i'd like to have it be a cyber wolf that was gentically modified to be less aggressive and have a loyality complex towards its master (my inquistor be it Umarus or Adrasita). To represent the BS of the bodyguard i was thinking something along the lines of Yarrack with a eye that shots las / vile. The reduced weapon skill would be covered by the loyality to protect its master (Not a attack wolf) and the other modfications to its stats lines could be gentitic tampering with the wolves DNA.
Ive talked with some friends about it. Some say they think its a cool idea, others disapprove stating it wouldnt fit. I'd like to see what the community thinks about it.

As a big fan of the 'Ghosts, I gotta ask you to add an augmetic jaw to Merrt. Even just painting the lower part of his face in a metallic would do it. Cool idea for the Phantine, I'll keep checking in to see what you do with the Verghastites
The jaw honestly is probably one of those slip ups that i just missed when i was painting him. When i have time again, i'll go back over and redo him with the jaw looking more metalic.
Thank you on the compliment for the Phantine
For the Verghastites im not sure excatly what i'll do but i do have a few ideas. we'll have to see
Now for a true update
This was from 2011
Inquistor Umarus was a interesting character to build for many reasons. First off, he was a combination of ideas presented by myself and the GM on a different type of Inquistor. We decided that he would be a Xeno Hybris Radical. This idea of a inquistor interested in and encouraging his retuine to find and use xeno artifacts presented alot of modeling opportunitys. It also presented a change from the norm for how some of the models would be built. I wanted the model to look imperial and demanding but yet have some less gothic features. Finally in the end, I took parts from many kits and came out with a rough design. Well not completely satisfied with the result, I feel that for the moment, it'll have to do till i can come back to reevaulate it. Once that has happened, I hope to get some pictures up for all to see.
For Gameplay purposes, I will be fielding him, as well as the other members DH characters as a Company command squad for my tanith in certain games. I figure a Inquistor leading IG into battle is a 40k image and am excited for the chances to play him on the table
Over the course of two days, my buddy KatoSniper and I have rebuilt my Inq Urmarus into his new look and with Kato's skills painted him up into his new look. We were unable to get any washes on him due to time constrants but we hope that he'll be washed ASAP. Im VERY impressed by the work Kato did and highly recommand his air cav guard to any one looking for more IG goodness
