The "Death" akin to "rain" could refer to how shells come from the sky...

"Shortly to become a flood" could be a reference to a barrage.

(here's where my argument falters) Withstanding the task at hand could refer to having to constantly keep the guns running

And the pain could refer too the injuries of the gunners from the boom of the guns or backfiring etc...

...like I said, a swing in the dark...

Well if The Death refers to Marines...

Maybe Dark Angels? The task would represent their hunting of their fallen brothers, with the rain referring to their corruption, while the flood would refer to maybe the corruption of the entire chapter? The pain could refer to the corruption of them, so they withstand it?

I rambled a bit, and may not have made too much sense, but i hope you get the picture...

An open-topped vehicle means that all passengers can shoot from any part of the hull of the vehicle. They may also disembark or embark within 2" of any part of the vehicle. After disembarking, a squad may act as normal, treated as moving. Therefore they may assault. When an open-topped vehicle is damaged (glanced or penetrated), any result on the vehicle damage chart is increased by 1. When an open-topped vehicle explodes, models inside only take a strength 3 hit, instead of the customary strength 4.
