marxlives wrote:Ya, our hobby doesnt attract the ladies, and I'm not talking about relationships, I'm talking about at playing the game. In a way the hobby reminds me of video games back in the day. Ya some really great people played video games but it also attracted some social destitutes. Which isnt always a bad thing in the right enviroment social destitutes can learn to be social people. Over time though, enough people played video games that even girl gamers are way more plentiful than they were twenty years ago. Both women are men are social creatures but while I'm a willing to tolerate playing with someone who doesnt bath and has zero social skills in order to play with the other cool people who hang out at my FLGS, most women dont see a need to. For example we had a tournament sometime back and I was playing against my first female opponent. Out of the blue this guy starts doing the insulting/hitting on girls thing social rejects tend to do, and heckles her most of the game. I told him to stop but I guess he was really hard for her and eventually had to call the ref over to kick him out of our game.

I have a world inhabited by strong women so wouldnt say that they are not competitive. However most are more willing to play at home than at a gaming store. Why its the trolls. Its the people who are so unsuccessful at every other venue in their life, that they bring their issues to the table and take fun, engaging, friendship confirming competition to a whole other level. So I dont think it depends on whether its Wyrd Games, Spartan, PP, or GW, its the gaming atmosphere your FLGS has. Luckly we have an air foce, army base, and college in my area so the store usually attracts people who have a life and are competitive in other areas outside the FLGS. I wouldnt say everyone there is a gem but we do have a high proportion of NCOs, OCs, graduate students, and independent business owners we are just really awesome company. Than again it only takes one or two trolls to ruin this vibe for female gamers. The lesson is, if your looking to meet women your better off swallowing the bullet and learning how to dance.

There's so many ridiculous generalizations in this post it makes my head hurt. Also love the "Alpha Nerd" vibe it's written in.

I was at a Malifaux event Saturday, one of the seven players was a woman playing a Seamus crew.

There are a couple of women that play on our Warmachine nights.

On the same nights, our FLGS runs D&D Encounters, which nearly half the people at the tables are women. They get about 50+ people each week. Which, given the current status of D&D, I'm not sure that I would call it role-playing.

Missus has SoB army and we've played a couple of games together after getting back into the hobby (she's also pulled me into medieval archery).

I've also mistakenly got her 'The Sims' for PC a while back and haven't seen her since...

She says she's not a gamer... at which point i cough and choke while muttering a proverbial.

I also keep seeing people in the thread mention a lot of female gamers are into D&D/roleplaying? I've mentioned it in conversation with her but she has no idea this world even exists. I'm almost hesitant to run her through a demo with some friends...she loves the medieval stuff (don't get me started on medieval sims - i'll have to put her face on a milk carton)

The only place I really play outside of the home is a Warhammer World itself (since it's actually the closest GW to me). I've seen a couple of women playing there, though not many.

My fiancée has a Space Wolves army (luckily for me, she seems to like bearded men) and she says she always feels like the staff at the GWs she's been in seem a little uncomfortable around her, polite and helpful, but still uncomfortable.

We have a couple (roughly 30ish % of our small gaming crowd) that are more into Malifaux and DnD/RPGs than 40k. But i dont think this is the 'norm'
