Rant will come soon about how grey knights have broken 40k and things we might do to possibly fix it.

Ok, lets do a fair representation of what happened. That wall, was the only piece of terrain in my DOW deployment zone! And someone griped when I tried to get a judge over to fix it. And talking to the judge later, it indeed was not supposed to look like that, that nice piece of area terrain on your side was supposed to fill the HUGE gap on my side of the board.

Sorry about the poor quality, I didn't realize it was such a poor picture until later. Note the 12"x4"x1" wall. You had one too.

Then your moves on turn one was a huge mistake, you deployed a huge portion of your army in such a way that I could block LOS with my ONLY terrain piece. As to saves, Driago failed his first two! Also turn one my entire army failed to see yours! It was also 6 KPs in 3 turns when you got very agitated and wanted to just call it because, "I roll 70% 6s" and my dice "bounce funny." I simply used my small model count, few KPs, single piece of terrain, Reserves, and cover/shrouding to give me a very high chance of success.

One piece of helpful advice, when someone greets you and asks you what you play don't say, "IG, i designed my list to kill DriagoWing." It doesn't go over well. Also, please read the basic wound allocation rules again as well as cover rules for infantry models.

Owned. I lol'd.

I won the East. We received a small standing glass plaque denoting 1st, 2nd or 3rd. Allegedly, the top 3 placers will be receiving GW online credit. I was told $300 for first. Evidently they are also sending me some kind of decorative trophy ala the weapons from previous years.

Yeah, It was absolutely hilarious, An AV14 wall I can't touch without a LD7 psychic test and following tank shocks. With the center objective and no way to draw LOS to the pariahs I was in for a tough match. Probably one of the hardest matches my DriagoWing has ever faced! Not to mention Hans is one hell of a good opponent. I was very very lucky to get away with only a minor loss. He easily could have been a massacre for him. Luckily that Ven dread of mine refused to die. I had to think back to when I played Necron in 4th before I got out of the hobby for a couple of years, I was rusty and made some mistakes. Great game against an even greater opponent.

Though I will not jump at the opportunity to dime you out here I will explain this part as it happened and why I offered, ranked in order from 1 being the most viable reason to 5 being least viable.
1. I had a 7 hour drive home.
2. I had not eaten anything and was exausted.
3. Your army was hidden I had no way to damage your army as nothing was left that could make it to you in time.
4. You didnt refuse me, I elected to finish on my own accord to make it fair on others.
5. Player etiquette (we talked about this after the game and can further in private messages if you desire)

Had nothing to do with your dice, or me wanting to give up, it was judging what could possibly happen and coming to the inevitable conclusion earlier. Sorry, if it came off differently, and as I said I was tired... no need to further explain. Good game!

Grats to everyone who placed. I got 2nd on west coast with my Eldar, was a good tournament overall. Regarding my second game, there were issues with the time (we only got to 4th turn) and I strongly feel (especially according to timestamps on my camera/pictures of the game) that the DE player slow played the game to a standstill. basically, had the game gone to turn 5, I was in position to move to make sure I got the major or massacre but never got the chance because he did not want to let the game go on (which is understandable given his position but what irks me was he actually accused me of slow playing and that I shouldn't be able to get another turn).

There were 8 minutes left in the game, I offered to take 30 seconds and give him 7.5 and the judge even offered us to be able to finish the next full turn and give him as much time as he wanted/needed. The player refused, saying he had too much to move/do (2 tanks and 14 models that mattered regarding objectives/killing my units) and refused to even try to do anything which ultimately cost me first place. Basically, I think it's unfair to allow a player to go "looks like next turn will really hurt, lets just let the game end now please".

I like what the Semi Final location (Game Empire Pasadena) did regarding time, if you don't get through 5 game turns, both players get no points (this motivates players to get turns done faster) and they had people going around making sure people were progressing in their games at a reasonable pace. I think all tournament venues, especially in a no sports/comp format like 'Ard Boyz should adopt such a policy, it would definitely prevent what happened where I played.

Also, just an aside, the guy I played was cool and really nice in person but regarding playing and the timing issue, it got tense and I once again understand that he wouldn't want the game to go on when he knew he was in a position to lose but I think we should have been able to play a full game at least because 4 turns is not a real game, especially since I was not the one who took so long on my turns. Also, the location and tournament organizers were great and cool too and if this was a local store I'd definitely hit it up as often as possible.

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

I had a lot of problems in my game with that Dark Eldar player too Adam.

http://blackmoors40k.blogspot.com/2011/09/ard-boyz-shenanigans.html

You reminded me of another thing he did. we had about 40 minutes left in the game and he asked me if it is ok if take one more turn, and we both have 20 minutes? For some reason I agreed to this when in fact my turn takes 5 minutes so we should have gotten 2 more turns in.

Yeah. He also pulled a lot of stuff like:

I forgot to roll for reserves (all I had was 2 3 man jetbike units) and he wanted them on the board so he can shoot them so to be nice, at the start of my next turn I offer to roll for the reserves before anything so nobody forgets and he goes ok. So I roll for reserves and then he goes "Oh dude, you just messed up, now you can't cast psychic powers!" Since Fortune/Guide/Doom are cast at beginning of turn and reserves are at beginning of move. I felt like that was pretty low. He also argued about a bunch of other rules which he ended up being wrong about and wasted time.

All this from a guy who moved models through other model bases illegally and routinely forget to take off casualties- rather than argue and waste time I just said whatever. I did call him on the not removing models from play (or later putting some back). I mean it's kind of fishy how a 6 man unit suddenly has 9 again and how a unit of 4 Wyches that fails 4 saves on each model has 1 Wych left at the end...it is what it is and if that's how he wants to win good for him! =)

Despite my 0-2-1 record in the NE Finals, I had a great time. All I can say is that it is one thing to know what Weaken Resolve does in theory. It's another thing to have it happen and lose 1420 points worth of Thunderwolves to it.
That was the first time I've ever faced a Psyker Battle squad.
Thanks to Mike for putting on a great event.

LOL. "Broken," maybe not, but not exactly balanced either. I6 halberds for zero or 2 pt per model? Psybolt ammo armywide for 5 pts or less per model? Vehicles that largely cannot be stunned/shaken for, what, 5 or 10 pts (when Extra Armour is 15 and worse)? Stackable Strength increases on widespread power weapons? The list is fairly large and several armies have little they can do to stop it or mitigate it.

I don't mind powerful, but when there's precious little trade-off and the costs are marginally increased at best, it's a bit troublesome from a design perspective. Their success in tournaments since release can be partially attributed to "new codex syndrome" where people aren't familiar with them, but I think they will have significant staying power, barring a nerf with 6th edition.

We'll see how they develop, though.

Ya, I ran two units of 8 psykers in my list and it was how i planned on keeping draigo down but it never worked because I could never cause a leadership check and those aegis dreads make my test on leadership 4.

Psyker battle squads are one of the best things IMO in the IG codex, glad to see it put to good use! Also, the use of Aeigis is pretty clutch in preventing that from being an issue.

Its like the equivalent of "doom and darkness" in WHFB, truly potent in gameplay. In my last game against GK, leadership and not being fearless seemed to be a big handicap, does any other GK player miss being fearless? I think that GK not being fearless is a huge hit but maybe that was a balance thing.

That's why I run mainly purifiers. Any draigowing player will tell you that LD and getting tank shocked is probably one of their biggest weaknesses.

Wow. With tables like that it's no wonder why people think 40k is a shooting game, where maneuver doesn't matter. Though the Ork army did its best to disprove that, it appears.

Not a fan of the open terrain, but love that they have space around the tables to put stuff down.

Not enough venues provide 'stuff' space anymore. It is just a row of 4x6's and you have to put your army on the floor or chairs.

Got a call from GW today. My 1st place prize for 2011 Ard Boyz is as follows:

- A Citadel Realm of Battle Gameboard
- A Cities of Death OR Planetstrike rulebook
- Enough GW terrain for a Cities of Death or Planetsrike table

I chose the Cities of Death loadout.

Not bad... I guess. Still would have preferred the Semis 1st place prize and fail to understand the rationale behind the prize support.

Talk to the store that you played at. I had a little difficulty getting my 2nd place prize as well. Not because anyone was holding anything out on me or anything, just because the store thought an online voucher would be provided and GW said the store was going to handle it. I got my prize (a Dark Eldar battleforce) which I gave away as a door prize at the Steel City Showdown last weekend at Legions Games in Pittsburgh.
