2007, if I remember correctly. But why restrict it to merely the US? Conservative/right wing/religious groups have long participated in violence against homosexuals across the globe. In 2008 in Moldova, homosexuals were told by an angry crowd that if they wanted to leave their bus alive they had to desztroy anything representing gay pride (they were heading to a gay pride parade). Russian authorities are similarly homophobic, and arguably they are in some ways more right wing than we (because of their supreme deregulation, which is also the cause of their corruption). 2008 in Hungary, an LGBT dignity parade was pelted with molotovs. Just last year there was an incidence of mob violence by conservative Kenyans against homosexuals.

Course, this all depends on how you want to define right wing. But given your apparent wide sweeping definition of "left", I figure you wouldn't have much of a problem with a wide sweeping definition of "right".
biccat wrote:When one set of political beliefs encourages mob violence, there's a problem.
Acting like the right wing somehow encourages it less is disingenuous at best.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Wow, I didn't know Mcarthy played 40k!

Actually, McCarthy pretty much reinforces my point. He was able to create fear of Communists because they were a marginalized fringe group. Today it's not surprising (nor difficult) to find proud communists on a college campus.

You want to give public education teachers pay that's competitive to private school teachers. Excellent, we'll take away all their subsidies and benefits and pay them like their private counterparts.

You want to make sure that the government supplies healthcare, social security to the elderly, and supplies welfare. Okay that's understandable, but you don't want everyone to pay for this, just the rich.

You want the government to supply construction jobs to repair the country's infrastructure. Respectable, but its not giving out wealth its only moving it around and right now we need something to generate it.

You rally behind a veteran because he received brain trauma at a rally for disobeying law enforcement. Later turns out the guy was dishonorably discharged supposedly for smoking crack, what a rallying figure that I can get behind.

You want the government to force cable news networks to give free air time to political candidates if they receive enough signatures on a petition. Okay but the government doesn't have the right to influence media like that. You're fighting for a state controlled media while fighting against the state controlling your own voice. Make up your minds.

This movement boils down to "We want more money and hate those who have it.". It also seems that they want to make everyone somewhat equal in income, but instead of making the poor richer they want to make the rich poorer which is kind of like Zimbabwe compared to Liechtenstein or Switzerland.

Data dink, data dude, data shut the feth UP! That's about all I can think of that hasn't been listed already. A friend of mine got called a killer once by a gunny (while we were at a pog unit) and he ended up saying something to the effect of "you're right i am a killer. it's my fault lcpl *soandso* got killed by that IED - thanks for reminding me" It's always fun to turn the tables. I often ignored "moto nicknames" and would assume in my head that whoever said it was probably talking about someone else - (i'm not a hard charger, must have me confused for someone else)

I was talking to my 1stsgt regarding a pending adsep since i had been accused of using cocaine. Anyway, when we were done talking, he used as a parting greeting "stay marine". He clearly didn't think that one through. It was no secret that I couldn't wait to get out and on top of that, the MC was trying to kick me out. I was going to bust his balls over it, but I went and took a nap instead.

What a class act to follow.

Of course they would.

The worst racism and infringements of liberty in the 20th century (both here and abroad) came from progrsesives. I'm sure you'll argue that Woodrow Wilson and Margaret Sanger would be Republicans today too.

Melissia wrote:2007, if I remember correctly. But why restrict it to merely the US?

Because that's the focus of this conversation. I'm sure you can provide links to this mob violence. Or at least some other identifying information.

Melissia wrote:Conservative/right wing/religious groups have long participated in violence against homosexuals across the globe.

You're associating "conservative" with "anti-gay." Once you do that it's not difficult to find evidence of violence against gays by "conservatives."

Melissia wrote:In 2008 in Moldova, homosexuals were told by an angry crowd that if they wanted to leave their bus alive they had to desztroy anything representing gay pride (they were heading to a gay pride parade).

We're talking about the Moldova in Eastern Europe, right? The one run by the Communist Party?

Melissia wrote:Course, this all depends on how you want to define right wing. But given your apparent wide sweeping definition of "left", I figure you wouldn't have much of a problem with a wide sweeping definition of "right".

I wouldn't if it were consistent and honest. I define "left" broadly as those who support government control and right as those who oppose government control. You appear to define "right" as "bad people who disagree with me."

Melissia wrote:Acting like the right wing somehow encourages it less is disingenuous at best.

Or, in the alternative, totally correct.

ShumaGorath wrote:I think the anti war elements of the time would disagree with you.

You're right, they would, nobody likes to be thought of as marginalized. But that doesn't make them widespread during the '40s and '50s, when McCarthyism was all the rage.

It wasn't until the '60s with opposition to the Vietnam war that communism became more acceptable.

I'll wait for this to turn into a media gak storm before I really start believing it. If it's real it'll get pretty huge (well, it'll get huge either way but then people will actually look into it).

Quantico isn't saying anything, they were asked and denied talking to them about it. You know why, because its against their proper procedures and they happen to be good marines.

The term "Left Wing" originates in the French Revolution. The embodiment of bloody handed left wing mobs were the Sans Culottes and specifically Marat. You'll find marxist scholars are often the most volumnous on the revolution. Don't take it as an attack. It's a historical fact. The fact that Revolution imagery was used makes the link that much stronger.

Right this is a strawman. You are not in the one percent you "as a banker" are not what they are talking about. However when you spend say a million dollars to help get a Congressman elected. Then you go and have a special meeting with that congressman after he is elected. In which you both decide bankers with circumstances exactly like yours shouldn't have to pay taxes then you'd be just scratching the surface.

In short you are the 99 percent.
