I'm more talking about they're current problem. The days where you could spend a few days recording an album and become an overnight millionaire are long gone (but they want to live in denial). EDIT: Well. Are going.

I think it's more that they can't pick and groom people as easily-- the RIAA and the music industry in specific are losing control over their market, which pisses hem off.

Honestly, for the US in general, SOPA is probably the worst piece of legislation that has been considered in the past decade, and that includes all the middle-east war stuff. It would effectively destroy online businesses for one....

Everything open source would be effected too.

And of course, there's always the vigilante provision which basically allows companies to participate in anti-competitive actions under the false guise of protecting copyright, forcing victims to prove their innocence. before the court of law (which violates the very fundamentals of American law).

And it's also the most harmful to the average internet user, far more so than it is to pirates.
The harm that does to ordinary, non-infringing users is best described via a hypothetical user: Abe. Abe has never even so much as breathed on a company’s copyright but he does many of the things typical of Internet users today. He stores the photos of his children, now three and six years old, online at PickUpShelf* so that he doesn’t have to worry about maintaining backups. He is a teacher and keeps copies of his classes accessible for his students via another service called SunStream that makes streaming audio and video easy. He engages frequently in conversation in several online communities and has developed a hard-won reputation and following on a discussion host called SpeakFree. And, of course, he has a blog called “Abe’s Truths” that is hosted on a site called NewLeaflet. He has never infringed on any copyright and each of the entities charged with enforcing SOPA know that he hasn’t.

And yet, none of that matters. Under SOPA, every single one of the services that Abe uses can be obliterated from his view without him having any remedy. Abe may wake up one morning and not be able to access any of his photos of his children. Neither he, nor his students, would be able to access any of his lectures. His trove of smart online discussions would likewise evaporate and he wouldn’t even be able to complain about it on his blog. And, in every case, he has absolutely no power to try to regain access. That may sound far-fetched but under SOPA, all that needs to happen for this scenario to come true is for the Attorney General to decide that some part of PickUpShelf, SunStream, SpeakFree and NewLeaflet would be copyright infringement in the US. If a court agrees, and with no guarantee of an adversarial proceeding that seems very likely, the entire site is “disappeared” from the US internet. When that happens Abe has NO remedy. None. No way of getting the photos of his kids other than leaving the United States for a country that doesn’t have overly broad censorship laws.

Essentially, both SOPA and PIPA are pieces of gak sponsored by pieces of gak whom were basically bribed by pieces of gak so they can rub their pieces of gak on everyone else.

Indeed, there's been a huge outcry by the tech industry, and even WIkipedia has taken a stance against the bill, which is an unprecedented move by them (they prefer to take no stances whatsoever), but considering the bill could very well shut down wikipedia, it's hardly surprising.

Stop Online Piracy Act Markup to Resume in February

Washington, D.C. — House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas) today said that he expects the Committee to continue its markup of the Stop Online Piracy Act in February.

Chairman Smith: "To enact legislation that protects consumers, businesses and jobs from foreign thieves who steal America's intellectual property, we will continue to bring together industry representatives and Members to find ways to combat online piracy.

“Due to the Republican and Democratic retreats taking place over the next two weeks, markup of the Stop Online Piracy Act is expected to resume in February.

“I am committed to continuing to work with my colleagues in the House and Senate to send a bipartisan bill to the White House that saves American jobs and protects intellectual property."

The irony is that the law would turn the US into job-destroying thieves. Then again, blaming "those damn foreigners" for everything is easy.

I'm glad this bill was rejected by the house, but I didn't quite understand the level of panic over it. yes, the possible outcomes were terrible. But worrying that this bill would cause you to lose access to your favorite Mr. Belvedere slash fiction site is sort of like worrying that every guy that looks at your mom is going to violate her anally. Sure, it could happen, but it probably won't.

If our rights are like your mom's sexual dignity, than the forces that seek to infringe those rights are all of the guys buying her drinks at the bar. Your mom is easy, and hangs out at seedy bars, so lots of guys (lobbyists) are buying her drinks and giving her compliments. (campaing donations and votes) Her libido is pretty eager, and doesn't have the best track record. (much like the House of representatives) Still, it's a big step from buying your mom a drink and taking her home. (getting the bill passed in the house) You need to play to her insecurities. (appease subcommittes) You need to remember that the bartender is watching. (media coverage) Finally, while your mom might have no trouble giving it away, your step-dad is willing to kick ass to protect what is his. (other lobbyists blocking bills)

Even if somebody takes your mom home, he still needs to convince her to actually have sex. Even your mom has some reason and sense. (the senate) Often, your mom has a weird upbringing that makes her a tease. (house and senate are different parties) So, even when she goes home with a guy, all she'll do is have another drink and than leave. (voted down in the senate) Or maybe she'll just give him a handjob. (compromise bill) To be fair, sometimes the compromise is pretty weird. (foot fetish video)

At some point, she migth remember that she's on her period. (no money to fund the bill) Well, if she's horny enough, she'll just move on despite the mess. (raise the debt ceiling) It's still a potential stumbling block.

Ok, so your mom decides to go ahead with it. Now, while the guy is eager, he might not be able to get it up. (presidential veto) She might be able to make it happen by sheer will (congressional veto override) but often she'll just give up.

Even if the guy is able to get it up, he has to be careful not to suffer premature ejaculation. (executive regulations that change the affects of the bill) He also needs to actually want to perform the specific sex act you fear.

Even if he gets to sodomize your mother once, that doesn't mean he'll get to keep doing it. When he takes a drunk girl home, hemight get picked up for date rape. (overturned by the courts) Or he gets VD. (negative publicity)

Now, just because your mom (the federal government) turns him down, doesn't mean he can't still mess with you. Your mom has a sluttier, uglier, and less freaky sister that he can take his chances with. (state government) While she might not do anal (due to limits to state power) she's needier and doesn't have a husband, so where she can hook up isn't limited. (states have far more power in their borders for small stuff) So while a guy might only be able to nail your mom in a motel (interstate commerce), he can bang your aunt in your house (state police power).

the moral of the story is that while your mom (congress) is easy, that doesn't mean you're going to have to watch her blow the guy that beat you up in high school. (the specific negative consequences of one bill)
