Just a moment, let me finish burning all of my models down to base elements, because if these are 'bad' then the paintjobs are obviously really crap. Avereage bill who plays 40k should look up tot the box art/studio minitures as what he can achive if he puts LOTS of time and effort into learning to paint properly. Having checked the galleries of the people posting saying it's rubbish, I'd like to see you do better on a tight schedule, 'Eavy Metal have to paint all the studio minitures to fit in with a schedule, and frankly, they do it quite well, maby they're not as good as the CB studio painters or other companies, but many other games don't have as intensive a release schedule, or don't have as many big unit releases. this feels really wierd, I'm sticking up for GW

The thing with GW paintjobs are that the majority of artists don't come near them when you look at the "clean-ness". They have a very crisp finish and I bet they do it in no time compared to many others. I consider myself to be a good painter, judging from the standards of myself and my friends but I can't compete with the paintjobs of the majority of GW's models if i don't try really hard. I think they do an extremely good job on their characters but sometimes they do alot worse with, for instance, 10 hastily painted Marines due to a tight timeschedual. That said, I think people who paint really bad have the right to think GW's paintjobs are bad, you just can't say you'd do it better.

As a fairly new painter, 'Eavy Metal is the first standard I want to try to reach. Since I have looked at the Masterclass book, I think it (and the GW standard) does a good job of encouraging the techneques needed to one day get to GD. I would call their painting in general a high table-top standard. Also consider the amount of time GD winners are placing in their projects now. It isn't even about a single figure and paint job but about the entire presentation and context of the piece.

This is why this is a really bad thread.
I don't mind criticizing color choices and stuff like that, honestly most of the studio Beastmen do look kinda gakky because of the choice of colors, but as far as the quality of the work itself I don't think there's really anything wrong with it. And snobbish gak like this is just off-putting to people who can only dream of achieving the standard you see on the fething boxes, let alone anything greater.
It's hard enough to find the motivation (or the time) to paint as it is, do you really want to discourage people from even trying? Considering all the bitching and whining I've seen about having to play unpainted armies all the time I think not.
I totally second that!
And guys, I'm saying it again, just cause its from GW doesnt meant you have to look for every oh so tiny flaw and call it a crappy paintjob! Jeeez!
Thirded (not a word, but eh), The GW hate on Dakka is reaching extremes lately.

In the pic of the back of the cloak, the eagle on the right hand side doesn't have an eye.
The model looks great, but come on...

The GW paint jobs look great to me. Sure I've seen better mini's when surfing the net, but most of them are works of countless hours. I think hating on GW paint jobs seems like just another attempt at a cheap shot towards GW.
Nail on the head /brofist
A huge amount of "pro" painters on sites like Dakka are guilty of this even tho the majority of them could not paint anywhere near as well as the eavy metal crew. (keeping in mind that GW minis are painted in a style to best showcase the minis for commercial use) Its like every 6 months there is a" BTP sucks" thread followed by a million crappy at home commision painters promoting themselves like vultures over a dead corspe.

Damn I cant wait to the GW legal team codex comes out now there is a dex that will conquer all. |

Here is the thing, there are 2 common types of painting a model.
We have golden demon that simulate light source, and shade / highlight it accordingly.
Then we have the newer heavy metal style which is highlight everything for the sake of highlighting everything.
Which means the highlight and shading makes zero sense. Other than for the purpose of creating an artificial illusion
to make the model "pop"
It makes a model looks more detailed and sharper.

They can reach the standard you people are talking about, they just don't have time. 'Nuff said.
