I'd do what was suggested earlier and put the model on E-bay. The sculpt is very hot right now, so if it sells for way cheaper than new, you know its low quality. If its about new price, then its average, and if it goes for more then you are in business!
For that particular model, I would not pay anything other than a deep discount. The painting advice you have gotten is really good, though, so it might be worth the pain. Would be interesting to see everyone that has posted one way or the other to post their own work to see a range of styles and abilities. I guess that wouldn't mean much though, since judgement has nothing to do with skill.

I like your idea though, someof us will be able to compare our best masterpieces to others.

this model is now officially for sale.
should anyone still want to buy it after hearing all of this criticism (i know i would be a little put off), feel free to send me a PM
i know this should probably be put in the swap shop, but people here have been quite helpful, so i figured they should get the news first, before i put it out to the whole market
I'll give you £20 posted?

I have to agree the paint looks rather thick but since it's painted to resemble/blend in to the clients army, can't say it's too bad

Bummer your buyer pulled out of the purchase, to each their own on the paintjob... If you have buyers for your work then good and I hope you do well at it, we all have to start somewhere. My main issue with the model is the fact that you have painted it Khornate but have left the purity seals on it. Being a stickler for lore and history I don't know why you left those on, but apart from that keep at it. I've been painting for years but am still average.

the word bearers do use purity seals as well i think, as a gesture of either irony or mockery.
to be honest it was mostly because when i bought the model, those were the ones i couldn't remove without harming the model.

Improvement!
Rust weathering powder: look at a car when it gets rust on it. Where does it rust? How does it rust? What does a car look like with paint chipped off? I know this isn't a car but I imagine they would weather and rust similarly. Try to "dirty" up those chips, rarely would a car have bright metal showing under the paint. It would be dull or the color of the primer. Also, the rust would occur where the paint is chipped off or worn off.
The way I rust: Make a dark brown roughly edged area near an edge of the model where you would expect rust (like near the ankle plate). From there, stiple on a lighter brown, then lastly stiple on bright orange. Add some metalic flecks in there.
Look at the area in the front panel of my land raider. Weathering powders are great (how I dirty-ed up the bottom treads and added soot) but I think a lot of practice will go a long way.
Keep on working!

Its weird seeing all the scratches so pristine fresh and clean.

I agree, I like the addition of the chips and weathering, but they're too clean, I think Brymm's got a good idea on it, also I know I used a layer of Devlan Mud to give a dirty, grimy feel to my Trollblood's armor, that might also be an idea (very simple, but no where near as awesome as his landraider's weathering).

Hey guy !! that is a pretty good job.. and I agree with what 2 guys before me said. Just to show you the strange thing, compare your battle damages with your bullets holes.. the colors are completely different.
To finish, I just read the post from the beggining and i agree with most of comments. Even if you paint it for some people you know and they paid you.. you just have to know that someone who have money for his paint job is generally an awesome painter. So when you show us something like you did, you have to know that people will react like that.. That's all,
Continue to paint, and you'll paint better ! =D
Ps: as I always say, excuse me for my english, I'm a litlle frenchy !

Big chips are tough to make look realistic. I know .
You should check out the sponge weathering technique, it can be more subtle, yet more striking. It does take practice, but everything does, doesn't it?
Check out this:

And this one has helped me tremendously:

Also:

I'm not saying that you should, but if it was me, and I am a little nuts about this, I'd strip the model and start fresh. I have a tendency to do that over and over.
disclaimer - i am NOT any sort of professional painter, I shoot for table top, but what I've found is that table top is a pretty high standard compared to what it was years ago.
Good luck and and keep plugging away at it.
