In the end it is your time and your money so play what you like.

That being said i think the game has far more to offer than powergaming netdecked armies/uber-competative tourney-style play.

The game can also be very enjoyable as a vehicle for story-based/scenario play, fluff based campaigns, historical refights, etc., etc.

I find that ultra-competative play sucks th life out of the game and seting, but to each his own...

Agreed. The game is supposed to be for fun. New players need a little bit of coaching regardless of a tier one army or not. A setting is provided by both players and should be encouraged by the more experienced one.

It is important how you represent yourself to others regardless of what hobby. To the TO. If you are using a tier list because you feel that you lack the skill in winning then be prepared to be beaten badly by a seasoned veteran who knows all of the tricks of the trade. If you are a decent sort of person then let the vets in your area help you out on how to play with that list. The next suggestion is to try to use all of the units in your codex and get used to them, including their weaknesses. This will give you an idea on how your codex works entirely. This also will give you a reason to play more fluff like armies for casual and sometimes competitive play.

Adam's Motto: Paint, Create, Play, but above all, have fun. -and for something silly below-

"We are the Ultramodrines, And We Shall Fear No Trolls. bear this USR with pride".

Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?

You must recite every rule of Dakka Dakka. BACKWARDS.

When I first picked up the hobby with my friends I played because I liked the look of it and it looked like a lot of fun. Sure it's great to play competitively sometimes to see who is the better player, but that doesn't mean you both cant forget your manners, play a great game and have fun. I agree with some of the others, get a firm grasp of the rules and go in whichever direction seems best to you, as long as people are polite I have always enjoyed the hobby, regardless of the outcome.

Just my personal opinion

Death will come at the hands of the ancients, those who determined our fate aeons before we stood erect upon the holy ground of terra and gazed up into the starry night.

To parrot what many people have already said:

Are you having fun? Is your opponent having fun? The single most important rule in all of Warhammer 40,000 is have fun. Honestly, there really isn't anything else that matters. Yeah, being competitive at times is nice, but not if you or your opponent wind up pissed off. If you play hxc lists because you like it, do it. Your money, your time. Just try not to be TFG.
