If it was a foot/hybrid list I'd be right with you there. Even already have a model made. But for this list it doesn't really fit. He'd be the only model on the board initially, which leaves him vulnerable and likely dead on the onset.

Plus kind of the point is that I avoid traditional deployment and movement. Coming out of left field and the sky can really throw most players off I find.

I like it. I don't have IG, but that's pretty awesome.

I was able to get in a game this weekend somehow. My opponent played a Dark Eldar list with allied Eldar forces. I don't know the extact details but his list was basically:

Vect + Eldrad + Archon in a Harlequin Troupe with Death Jester and some other stuff
2 Wytches in Veno's
2 Warriors in Veno's
1 Ravager
3 Eldar Jetbikes
3 Eldar Warwalkers with Scatter Lasers
2 of the fighter flyer (not the bomber)

We played Hammer and Anvil / Scouring.

I may do a full batrep later (no pictures) but there are some key lessons:

1. I dropped too aggressively. The Venoms have 12 shots each and its just too much for anything to survive.
2. The enemy fliers coming in on Turn 2 annihilated my Long Fangs so they did nothing. Going second (it was my choice) was possibly a bad idea for this reason alone, but I think an Officer of the Fleet would have helped in this regard.
3. Objectives aren't everything. I ended up giving my opponent First Blood and Warlord because of my aggressiveness and he had a unit on an objective in my deploy zone.

I may be too harsh on myself. I'm known in my gaming circle for reliable Plasma. I almost never overheat and when I do I almost always make the save. This was one of those outlier games... Two Grey Hunters killed themselves immediately with Plasma and another died in Overwatch. None of my Plasma was effective, all vehicles were damaged due to a paltry number of Bolter shots that managed to roll a 6. My opponent sure thinks the game would have been different if I was A) at all able to roll a 2+ save (I lost every Wolf Guard immediately by rolling a 1, but then managed to make the rest of the rolls on a 3+ a lot of the time for that same shooting event) and B) able to roll to hit/wound at least statistically average.

Apparently the Dice Gods get angry if you ignore them for 2 months.

I'll have to rock a few more games before commiting to changes, but playing a pretend duel: Wolf Lord completely unable to kill Vect thanks to that 2+ save. I'm thinking it'll be worth it to take more rather than one cool guy... Also, possibly Dreadnoughts instead of Long Fangs. They have the added bonus of being able to fire on the turn they arrive. It may be worth considering even with the way vehicles work now.

Captain al'rahem eh? I never thought of that! Super cool.

No comments? Wall-o-text must have scared people off!

We'll be able to give the list a go this weekend. We'll see how things work. I'm not too concerned about the lack of long range fire power given A) I'll be in close and B) you can't suppress vehicles as easily anymore.

Just a rough status update. Several more games in with the new list. Dark Eldar/Eldar, Eldar/Dark Eldar, Dark Eldar/Orks, Marines...

My placement strategies have improved. First turn drop is usually having a nasty effect on the enemy. I'm also tending to have bodies still standing now that I'm destroying enemy units on Turn 1 (or crippling) and being careful with my placement of Pods and disembarking Grey Hunters so that the enemy can't just shoot the unit with their whole army.

My main problem is Bjorn. The fire power he brings is definitely necessary. Him guaranteeing I can go second is very helpful, though its hard to get a warlord trait he can actually use. My problem is actually that he is too deadly! Whatever he's been shooting at, he's generally obliterating outright between his Plasma Cannon and Heavy Flamer. This leaves him out in the open. If I could actually make a 5+ Save to save my life it wouldn't be such a big issue, but starting out with a D3 VP deficit and an extra objective on the table in enemy hands has made things rough.

Also, I'm playing against more and more Dark Eldar because I find them damn annoying. Haywire grenades are scary. Krak Grenades are not a problem for Bjorn, but Haywire grenades translate to a bad day. Especially with the lower initiative. I'm also finding that, even with Snap Fire, Dark Eldar Archons can generally solo charge a 10 man Grey Hunter squad completely tricked out and wipe them handily. I'm thinking I need to get Bjorn in combat and challenging these jerks to keep them off my grunts.

I'm surprised Dark Eldar are giving me such grief. I expected other armies to be problematic (maybe Necrons?) but so far its been DE that's the biggest pain. Probably because I close the distance to them immediately...

Overall, the army plays better with this revised list however. Long Fangs were a waste of points with what I was doing. I'm loving Al'rahem. This guy has quickly become the bane to a few players, and his plucky platoon has saved my butt by grabbing the required objectives. The lack of a Commissar hasn't been an issue, but mainly because I'm keeping them away from the bulk of the enemy and using my Space Wolves to pin the enemy somewhere on the table.

Doesn't the lack of Chimeras mean the IG can only get to objectives pretty close to the one board edge they happen to come in on?

This thread inspired me to track down some IG models to use, I'm going to be using the ones from Dreamforge (in my sig ).

Was thinking of picking up the Secret Weapon wheeled vehicles for Chimeras... but if you think they're a liability maybe I'll re-think that decision.

So... are you against the Chimeras now, and would you ever consider using them again after playtesting? It seems they could fulfill some roles... particularly giving the infantry more mobility, and some cover.

Well between the Podding Grey Hunters and Al'Rahems "Like the wind" he can cover a good bit of ground fairly easily.

Liking the way this list is progressing and hoping to see more like it. Hell, I'd be tickled pink if someone were to bring this to NOVA just to watch them play it.

Unholy_Martyr, I am going to be building a similar one (based on BA instead of SW), and had registered for Nova but don't have it done, unfortunately!

I will definitely have it done in time for next year's (shooting to have it finished by Adepticon) so if you come up again you may well see it
