What is a Free man if not a dead man 11-B
In my moment of strength I realize I am conflicted. I pray to the God emperor, and yet I worship my own ambition. I see in the eyes of Fier, the same fear that I felt when I was only a sergeant back on Tyr. We had been fighting eldar pirates, and the horrors they carried on their ravagers were some things I'll never forget. Sinister banners fluttering as they sped through our lines and tore through my brothers I remember it so vividly...
In the constant downpour the trenches were flooded and we were simply instructed to wait. Space marines ten in all, and we were told to hold position and wait for the storm to pass. They didn't mean the rain.
'Brother Mortis!' -called out neophyte Nicus Abbareus. 'The command has come from Captain Adramelech. He wants us to hold this trench!'
'I know Nicus, I've received the vox! Will we be receiving reinforcements to hold the pass?' -replied Mortis.
'They say no my brother! 10 shall be sufficient to hold this mountain pass, shall we alert our brothers?' -asked Nicus.
'No, we need not cause any conflict. But tell everyone to check their mags.'
'As you wish Brother Mortis'- Nicus replied. He slogged through the knee deep water to squad mates who were facing outwards towards the entrance to the pass. Sinter noticed something approaching and peeked back looking at Nicus. He took off his helm and held it, calling out through the rain spoke. 'You wish to speak Brother?' -queried Sinter.
'I do, tell our brothers to check their bolters, We shall be standing duty.' -Nicus thought of saying more but turned away.
Walking back to his post he picked up his stalker pattern bolter, stripped, cleaned, and checked it in under 30 seconds. He peered through his scope and looked down to the entrance of the pass. Nothing yet, but he felt it as his heart rate seemed to heighten. Seconds passed, and they turned into minutes which turned into hours.
Dusk was beginning to fall and the rain seemed to have only gotten worse. So to stop the trenches from flooding Brother Glurin and Milot dug out side channels so the water would run down the mountainside. I felt horrible not knowing what we were putting ourselves into, but we had dug our graves. I heard a scream and the calming sound of bolter shells being loosed. I looked to Nicus and he looked stern. From thirty feet away Milot was running back while carrying Glurin over his shoulder. He was waving his arm through the air and screaming something I could not hear through the rain, He was so close... He almost made it to the trench when a recurve barb peirced his back and protruded through his chest. Stopping and looking at his chest he looked at the scarlet liquid that pumped out of his torso. He looked up at me and I knew fear. He whispered a single phrase that despite all the noise I heard clearer than ever. 'They didn't mean the rain sarge'....' His body was jerked back like a ragdoll as the barb came back to its owner. A menacing Autarch looked at me, its bright red auspex lit up the night sky. Suddenly 19 other pairs lit up all around the trenches they were only feet away.
'Nicus, Eldar! Let hell loose brother!' -I screamed as I revved my chainsword and bounded out of the trenches. Nicus let loose so many shells and dropped four Kabalite in a matter of a second. They saw him as a threat I suppose, because they replied with their weapons. Damn them all! Damn their race... Damn the Xenos... They took my brothers speech. A lucky shot hit Nicus in his throat and shredded his whole neck. Luckily it did not kill him but it did take his voice from him. He clutched his throat and hid away until it could re-knit. Seeing this I went into a bloodlust fearing for my brothers life, my screams were more terrifying than anything casting down my helmet and bolt pistol. I charged straight into the closest Eldar severing his thin body in a single swipe. The next came on and with an upwards sweep to its groin plate I wedged my chainsword into it and drug it higher until it couldnt at which point I tore it free. Looking around quickly I searched for an enemy and broke into a stampede barrelling into the small Xenos I crushed its torso.
Getting up I saw it lived and so i laid into it fist after fist of hateful vengeance and spite. My fists fell again and again the helm broke loose revealing the bruised face of a beautiful Eldar woman, in her eyes I saw terror and fear. I stopped, transfixed by her. That was my mistake a rending pain where my entire body hurt, I was peirced in the back by some spear and I came down to my knees face to face with the female Xenos. 'You spared me, and I shall do the same mortal.' -spoke the woman in such tones of elegance I was forgetting to breathe. Her cold hand touched my face 'Zepar Rul... We shall meet again, and do not expect my kindness.' She stood and limped to her spear that was lodged in my back. Tearing it free she leaned down again and spoke 'Remember your purpose Legionn.' She limped away to her Jet bike and fled.
The other Eldar came to me and began picking me up. Stunned and in shock I was helpless. Looking at the night sky I saw a single light shining brightly. It grew brighter as it came on. Plummeting into the mountian. Three large terminator armoured figures came out of the corescent ball of light. The Brother I now call Lex was the Leader of this relief force, I'd heard of his glory before but I never had expected to meet one of the Kings' own. His Thunderhammer crackling with power, his voice commanding authority he screamed 'For the Obsidian Throne!' and charged to the unexpecting eldar, pulverising four in a matter of seconds. He had a different fighting style carrying the Thunder hammer in two hands and using a hip flexion to swing it with devastating affects.
In less than a minute he had saved my life and that of my squad, at least the ones who survived. Looking up and choking on my blood I spoke to the Kings own. ' Forgive me, my lord. We...failed..'
'No, Lord Mortis, you have succeeded just long enough. Naberius calls for you, I'm lucky I arrived here on time.' -The giant said with his deep voice.
'Well I am in your debt Lex' - managed to get those few last words out as my breathing shuddered...
