I personally think $500 for an army is a huge understatement...Marine armies are about as cheap as you can get, and the last time I priced out a list it was over $600. And it had two storm ravens in it, so likely over $700 now.

You can use eBay and buy strictly used to try and keep the cost down, but same could be said for a game console, and I assume that when we're making the comparison we're using full retail prices for both hobbies.

Marines are in fairness probably helped by them being in all the starter sets. How many people got Termies for ridiculously cheap from the AOBR?

Can be if you want it to be

It was more about that GW guy directing someone to, imo, American looking troopers, when his customer apparently wanted someone Vietnamese looking...

Thinking further on this now, I kinda regret posting it, didn't intend to tread the borders of racism. Or comedy failure.

Oh, was the guy looking specifically for Vietnamese or American soldiers from the Vietnam War?

There are a lot of people interested in "historical" or other warfare related miniatures that aren't the things we build and play with. I cringe every time I see a GW employee try to steer a customer toward product they clearly aren't interested simply because they are so married to the GW sales script. I know they have to do it but I've never seen it actually make a sale or even create a new customer.

That is a very nice store. Very nice indeed. There's a rather nice store about 45 min from my house, similar to this one, though not so industrial. There's another, much smaller stor 15 minutes from my house...as everything in life, it always comes down to location, location, location.

I remember back when I actually used to hang out in game stores, an odd, grumpy old man would come in periodically and just sit near the door staring quietly at the people inside. Nobody really had the guts to see what he wanted, but eventually someone got up the nerve and it turns out the store used to be his favorite Tobacco Shop... I guess he was silently protesting...

Do you guys have any funny stories at stores?

Did any of this actually happen or is it just a bad joke? Are these same people going to the apple store and ordering fruit?

Haven't step foot in a GW for quite a long while but I did hear a story concerning a mate of mine.

Last year he popped into the local GW with a girl he was trying to impress, though the manager he isn't fond of was in and my mate tried saying some bad stuff about the manager behind his back. Said manager overheard and berated my mate for a good 15 minutes.

I have, I worked in the stores of a John Deere dealership once and didn't get anyone coming in quite so stupid. We did have a lot of people coming in and asking if we did gravel but that was because there was a sign for a hardware merchants right outside the gate...come to think of it they were being a bit stupid considering there were fifteen green tractors in the front yard and a huge John Deere sign on the front.

I've heard it happen too. One of the ex managers of my local GW got the standard "irate customer slams a console on the desk and rants at them", then he points out that they sell tabletop games and said person storms out (this was in Watford IIRC BTW, before he came to ours). A few hours later, by chance would have it another customer walks in asking if they sell Nintendo Wiis. Thus the broken Wii becoming one of the most overused bad comedy props in that GW...

Heh, that is quite funny.

"Hello? Who's this 'Manticore' I've heard so much about?"

Knowing GW, however, they'd say he's a great, high quality plastic kit that can be purchased for X amount of money.

One of my most favourite stories is this:

My local GW's manager recieved a call concerning 'Assault on Black Reach' saying that her son (For the purpose of this story lets call him Tyrone) was in here earler looking at the starter box.

Now, we remember him being here so the manager told her so and asking what was the matter.

She then said that the name was racist because she misheard from Tyrone as 'Assault on Black '

Needless to say, many laughs were shared.

Anecdote time: best one I've ever seen was back in June (the last time that I was actually in my local GW, as it goes). A bloke and a wee boy came in, and the bloke told the manager he was looking for "Black Ops 2" for his wee boy's birthday. I was most amused by this on three counts:

Firstly, the obvious, Games Workshop is not that type of store.
Secondly, 'Call of Duty: Black Ops 2' isn't even due out until November, never mind back in June.
Lastly, the bloke was blatantly trying to purchase an 18+ rated game for a child no older than 7, which would have got him refused service anyway!

this tread makes me laugh so hard.

I was at my local GW (well kinda local for an hour drive) and two kids about 13 or 14 came in, set up all the models, and then turned to the only clerk to ask "how do we play this game?" I turned back to him to see a stunned face that only displayed confusion. Poor bastard.

Being there I also saw a lot of happy customers skip into the store only to slowly turn and flee.

Some guys in store once packed up one of the kids in an empty box from the delivery ready for the mum who was coming to pick them up. They were up for it, as was the dad who was present and sealed the box. Was quite funny.

Honestly, if it's not on the news/TV and Little Timmy isn't asking for it, you'd be surprised at the amount of people that don't know what things we take for granted are. I know a lot of people in their 20's that don't know what D&D is because Nintendo and other video games have been their only game exposure and D&D hasn't been news worthy since it was linked to devil worship in the 70's/80's. I can't tell you the amount of times I say I'm a gamer and people respond with "You mean like WoW and Xbox?"

I seriously want to kill the entire video game industry for stealing that word.

Stop telling people you're a gamer and start telling people you're a player... they won't keep thinking you play video games then!!

Once upon a time I was one of those kids. Luckily the first gaming store I ever walked into was... well... Dakka Dakka Games.

Speaking of good time at Dakka, many a year ago a little old lady walked in and took a look around.

She spent maybe 30 or so minutes looking at all the models and then asked the manager what was needed to get her grandson into the game.

He told her "Ken, here, plays the futuristic version and I'm sure he'd love to help you out."

We all know you just need 2 troops and an HQ to start. I convinced her to buy a massive army. Guard IIRC.

The manager was so happy he told me to grab a box of whatever I wanted. Being a dumb kid I think I just grabbed some Zombies or something I didn't really need.

I tried to buy some green stuff today at local GW store. Come to find out on a Saturday I picked the exact half hour that they CLOSE for lunch. It's obviously been a long time since I've been to a GW store so I'm guessing this is the one-man store operating model at work.
I had been thinking on picking up the new starter box just because it has a lot of cool looking stuff. Hadn't really bought any GW directly since the 5th Ed starter box.

The store having to lock up because only one person operates it annoyed me enough into rethinking a purchase, after all. The company is making beaucoup duchats. Betting they could hire a second person at the ones they deign important enough to even keep open.
