However, this rule contradicts the Crash & Burn modified Effects on Passenger rule (as that requires a disembark and the Nightscythe says that its embarked passenger may not disembark). Hence (by the rules on BRBPg7) "the rule printed in the codex always takes precedence".

100% correct.

When the Nightscythe model specific rules are applied to the Effects on Passengers we get:
1. Passengers unit goes into reserves.

You've replaced 2 effects. The Nightscythe only conflicts with one. Why did you replace 2?

You have to apply the codex rule as a whole. It can not override one effect on the passengers. It overrides all effects on the passengers.

Citation required - you're making an assumption. The codex rule is applied as a whole in the following scenario:

When the Nightscythe model specific rules are applied to the Effects on Passengers we get:
1. Passengers take a S10 no armor save hit
2. Passengers unit goes into reserves.

That seems to be about as artfully as I can present this case. If that's not enough to convince you, I guess I'm not going to. I'm happy to wait until GW gets around to FAQing this. All the major tournaments that have done so to date of which I am aware have ruled no damage for the embarked passengers, so I'm pretty confident GW will do the same.

Yes, all major tournaments have always predicted the way GW will rule.
And remember - GW FAQing something doesn't mean that was the right way all along - FAQs change rules.

There has been zero support, ever, put forward as to why both rules are being replaced instead of just the conflicting one. Page 7 even says that the advanced rules override "any contradicting base rules." How does taking a hit contradict the Nightscythe rule at all?

Your own argument shows that you are incorrect Doug. Using this section. I renumbered them for clarity
When Crash and Burn is applied, the Vehicle Effects above change to:
1. "Vehicle is destroyed" (no change)
2. Wreckage of the flyer scatters 2D6 and (potentially) damage any units the wreckage lands on. (changes location and amount of damage done to those outside the vehicle).
3. Vehicle Model is removed (change is no crater)

When Crash and Burn is applied, the Effects on Passengers above change to:
4. Passengers suffer damage (S10, no armor save allowed)
5. Passengers must disembark (into the space where the wreckage scattered in the vehicle effects above).

So, these are the effects of an Explode result on a Zooming Flyer that has no special rule that says otherwise, and by the rules on BRBpg7 take precedence for the specific case in which they apply (a zooming flyer that receives an explode result on the vehicle damage table).

"If the Nightscythe is destroyed, the embarked unit is not ALLOWED to disembark, but instead enters reserves. Looking at your breakdown of what happens, you have to check to see "when does the passengers disembark?"

That would be section 5, which is immediately after section 4 (Taking damage)

Doug wrote:Long, well thought, but ultimately fallacious argument.

Where your argument loses me is your arbitrary determination that the rules for vehicles being exploded and the effects on the passengers are two separate processes, or the effects on passengers are a single process that happens at the same time. Nothing in the rules suggests, indicates, or even implies that is the case. Arbitrary definitions and premises without evidence is a fallacy.

Why would the rule for the reserves be in there if the intent was to kill them off with the Crash and Burn rule anyway. Necrons in a Nigh Scythe do not take the hit and are instead placed in reserves. Otherwise why would the rule exist in the first place? Has anyone asked GW? I worked for them for a long time and have played the game since pre first edition. They dont make exeptions to rules without reason. The reason was 'flier destroyed' unit is not teleported or crashed but now has to walk to the battle. Otherwise they would have stated "Necrons take hit then enter reserve".

Thread necro. And no, they wouldn't have said that. Because the codex was written in 5th edition.
