More reasons to have some ST back on TV. We've stopped hoping for Utopia. It may be unattainable and unrealistic but it's Something to aspire too...even if only for an hour a week.

^^ True dat. I'd rather watch a new Star Trek show than another reality or crime scene show.
Maybe a reboot of Star Gate?

Good idea. Maybe after a reboot, they can find a way to make the show not a celebration of the below-average.

Well, I always thought with Star Trek that the different alien races were basically just different components of people's character. So, the klingons were the aggressive, martial side, Vulkans the logical/intelligence driven side with the Borg as the negative side of that, Ferengi with the acquisition of belongings, (later on) Bajorans the spiritual.
The Federation presented there was really the ultimate form of liberalism - everything is tolerated, but people are well enough educated/brought up to be able to lead balanced lives without having to be policed. An ultimate extension of the ancient Greeks idea of 'aristocracy', in its original sense, which means to excel in all areas. The citizens living as part of the Federation have been freed from the desire/need to provide sustenance and accumulate wealth, and instead can focus on an exploration of the environment around them in whatever form that requires - be it space exploration, making music and art, the growth of knowledge but generally the furthering of their own potential. I guess there are elements in there in terms of 'pure' communism - Marx always maintained that only though an absolute abundance of resources could the break-down of social hierarchies, and disparities of wealth, could that be achieved. The replicators fulfil that function, I'm sure having a magic box that you could tell 'cup of early grey, hot', 'Ferrari V8, or 'new lungs please' would make a massive difference to the world.
So certainly in my own mind it is something of a Utopia (at least until the Borg show up and turn you into a drone). Perhaps that was what was missing from 'Enterprise' the people crewing the ship had more in common with something like Star Gate or BSG in that they were far more recognisably like us in terms of their characters and what drove them, to the point where it just seemed like a bunch of Americans travelling around space. In that way it didn't really capture the spirit of Star Trek, or at least Gene Roddenbery's vision for it.

I always thought the different species where to represent some real world allegories.
The Romulans are the Soviets. Always messing with the Federation in a Cold War way.
The Cardassians are Germans and the Bajorans Jews
Klingons have a lot of Imperial Japan in them.
Of course Ferengi are Republicans

I vote for Kamala from the episode "The Perfect Mate". Famke Janssen FTW.

I always interpreted the Cardassians to be an allegory for East Germany.

Dunno. They didn't exist in the 1967-1969 series, nor in TNG. Other than the Maquis and the Bajorans, I never noticed much allegory after TNG.

Gotta go with Nazi Germany or at least some one who's attempted a genocide or brutal occupation. Automatically Appended Next Post:
