I don't understand the fervant love for the Ciaphus Cain series.

I own the first omnibus- read it, enjoyed it. I bought the second one and was totally burnt out on CC stories halfway through the second story in the book.

Every single story (that I've read) has the exact same little jokes in it, and generally plays out and ends the exact same way.

Is there like, some secret factor within the books that eludes me? They just seem way too repetitive to me.

Caiphus Cain is a 40K-themed sitcom.

Ciaphus Cain is a sitcom where they only made one episode and repeat it every night with the characters renamed.

Arik Taranis, the Thunder Lord. He fixes the problems with the Thinder Warrior's gene enhancement.

His deads during the unification wars are so amazing that the historians who have knowledge of the Primarchs dismiss them as "lurid hyperbole".

Not to mention that the mere mention of his name floors a gathering of (Bad ass) space marines.

Best part is that he is mostly likely the "Giant of a man" in Trazyn's gallery.

It's more like Harry Flashman in space - if you enjoyed the Ciaphus Cain books then I highly recommend George Macdonald Fraser's works.

My favourites are the Eisenhorn books followed by Guant's Ghost series. Both are fantastically well-written about their respective subjects.

My personally favorites are Eisenhorn and the Night Lords Series.
The prophet is an amazing character.

There are some variations but in essence you are right. The good old Jurgen ex Machina can get a bit tiresome
Of course, a certain amount of recycling old ideas can be seen in almost all of the large BL series.
If the Ghosts get even more "awesome" then the Munitiorum has to give them powerarmour and their own chapterworld.

Oh yeah, Saul was pretty awesome too, but Lucius is a recurring character. The random guy who killed him was another emperors children commander.

I dont understand your P.S.? Do you mean Eidolon is my nickname? And yes, I read that story. Eidolon is a cocky son of a bitch who doesnt know when to stfu, which I feel is a fitting handle for me on a 40k forum.

I will vouch for the Soul Drinkers, Ben Counters ways of basically saying "Feth you Imperial shackles!" really speaks out to me and shows the darker corrupt side of the Imperium as well as marines having certain emotions you wouldn't normally think they would.

Sergent Luko is my favorite in that series, thats right a tactical marine sergent with dual lightning claws! Bring It!

I also enjoyed the Grey Knight series by Ben Counter as well, with good plot twists and demon slaying i really enjoyed it.

Treacheries of the Space Marines is a mixed bag so far. There's a great little short story with Typhus that's clearly inspired by the great horror movie Pontypool, and also this bit that reminded me of that Batman: The Animates Series episode "Almost Got him". Basically, Iron Warrior, Word Bearer, Night Lord, Emperor's Children, and Thousand Sons warlords all sit around and recall their tales of the Long War. The other stuff hasn't interested me very much so far.

I don't know about anyone else, but I've found the 3rd Night Lords book pretty disappointing. It feels like both the characters and their interactions have been incredibly inconsistent.



Maybe it has a strong end?

However, I'd recommend the second Night Lords book (Blood Reaver) in particular. As a note, I read it first, and you don't need the first one for context.

I remember really liking the Gaunt's Ghosts and Eisenhorn series, but was much younger then.

No, the 3rd NL book is probably the weakest as far as characterization. Almost all of 1st Claw has these wierd "character swings". They aren't big enough to be considered character development, but they're certainly departures from their established character traits. The 3rd book is probably my least favorite, despite the fact that I love .

Bookwise it has to be the Gildar Rift. Picked it up in the store because of the cover art, flipped through it, saw space battles, bought it. Turns out I love Cawkwell's writing style, I've since gotten Architect of Fate for her contribution and I'll probably get Valkia as well.

But yeah, as an oldschool BFG fan Gildar Rift was like a shot of pure entertainment.

I didn't really like the angle Cawkwell put on Huron, drooling on himself and giggling like a mad hatter. The portrait of the man painted by Forge World's Badab War and ADB's Blood Reaver is far more interesting.

Overall, I would say the Tyrant and Ahriman are probably my top two.

My favorites, so far...

Titanicus, Brothers of the Snake, Horus Rising, and the Gaunt's Ghosts novels, because Dan Abnett.

I also enjoyed the Ciaphas Cain novels and Gunheads, which I read as part of the Hammer of the Emperor omnibus. That really felt like a tank crew in action. Even though they're in the far future.

I'm starting False Gods now.

I have loved the Ciaphas Cain series so far, great for looking at the funny side of the 40K universe. I've also been reading the Eisenhorn trilogy, and it's awesome thus far.

Too bad, I was hoping it would pull off a strong ending and save the book. Also, not sure you need that spoiler tag there, the "prophecies" seem a bit overly literal, so I think the book done spoiled itself .

Re: Huron, too bad: he's one of my favorite characters, and I really liked him in IA and BR.

Also, Into the Maelstrom has a pretty cool look at Huron, and I think the first fiction about him outside of his RT character entry.

In order of affection:

Amberely and Cain
Navigator and her lover in Night Lords Trilogy
Pretty much everyone in Helsreach

My favorite BL characters are from the (old) graphic novels, TBH. They really do a much better job of portraying the horror and despair of the 41st millennium (plus loads of cool action).
Sister Ephrael Stern, Princeps Hecate, Brother Cloten, Interrogator Gravier, and of course the ladz from Deff Skwadron.

My favorties of these are porbably Stern (from Daemonifuge), and Gravier (inquisitor Ascendant).

Despite not liking any of the characters (and having no interest in the Legion), I've found the best Heresy book to be Fulgrim. It reverses the most common BL novel flaw (strangely absent in most of the comics) of the writer writing himself into a such a terrible hole that only a deus ex machina can get him out in that it starts off kinda lame, but then really picks up showing the downfall of the Primarch and his Legion.
