I can honestly say iv never read any of the gaunts ghost series. The imperial guard has never really rang any bells for me. To give me some sort of idea what to expect can you tell me what you like about the series?

It's pretty personal, there are a lot of important characters and each is given their own history, etc. The first book is a lot about Gaunt's history as a Colonel-Commissar and such, the second book is split into a bunch of non-chronological stories that describe a lot of the Tanith's higher ups at their finest moments. It really shows some good interactions between different regiments from different worlds and how their cultures collide. Mostly, the Ghosts are fighting against Chaos cultists, however there are instances where they face minor daemons, CSM, Orks and Eldar. I would recommend getting the first omnibus (first three novels and a bonus short story).
Also: It stays pretty true to the guard's fluff, however completely exaggerates certain details (but, it works well). I recall that somewhere, the Autocannons are described as being as big as howitzers, however in book 2, Bragg singlehandedly wields a Jerry-rigged TL autocannon from the hip.

I really enjoyed the Ravenor series. Got the trilogy all in one signed by Dan Abnett which was pretty cool. Harlon Nayl is pretty Badass in that.
Not read the Eisenhorn series yet but heard it is really good also

Helsreach - Grimaldus. After reading that book I began the long process of converting my Space Marines and Dark Vengeance: DA to Black Templars. I would highly suggest reading it.

This. Be it Eisenhorn, Ravenor or Gaunt's Ghosts, you can't really go wrong with Dan Abnett.

I was considering a DV box for BT Marine conversion. How viable is it? Is it plastered head to toe in DA iconography?

ADB: I showed the Wolves revealing the key weakness at the heart of the World Eaters; showing Angron that his Legion was broken and worthless compared to the others; that he was the one primarch who couldn't trust his own warriors, and that they didn't care if he lived or died; showing that loyalty to brothers and sons is the heart of success for the Legiones Astartes, to the point even Lorgar makes a big deal out of saying the World Eaters and their primarch were massively outclassed by Russ, and Angron was too stupid to see the lesson Russ had sacrificed time, sweat, and blood, to teach. We're talking about a battle the Wolves won, by isolating the enemy general through pack tactics, and threatening to kill him, without a hope of defending himself. It was a balance, 50/50 - Angron overpowered Russ, and the Wolves were losing ground to the World Eaters; but Russ and his warriors had Angron by the balls, and barely broke a sweat. They won, no question. Lorgar even says: "The Wolves won, meathead."
Dorn won’t help you either. He’s too busy being the Emperor’s groundskeeper, hiding behind the palace walls. The Wolf is too busy cutting off heads as our father’s executioner, while the Lion holds on to his secrets, and has no special fondness for you. Who else will come? Not Ferrus, certainly. Nor Corax either. Even as we speak, I suspect he flees for Deliverance. Sanguinius?’ Curze laughed cruelly. ‘The angel is more cursed than I. The Khan? He does not wish to be found. So who is left? No one, Vulkan. None of them will come. You are simply not that important. You are alone.’ Konrad Curze to Vulkan

Eisenhorn Trilogy
Ravenor Trilogy
Bothers of the Snake
The Night Lords novels
Eye of Terror ---- Most rediculous book ever written about 40k.
Gaunt's Ghosts novels are pretty good. A few are a bit dull (or silly).
Do not read Souldrinkers novels. Worst pieces of trash published by BL.

Eisenhorn and his original crew, Garviel Loken and Torgaddon , Nathaniel Garro, pretty much everyone in the Night Lords novels up to and including the Exalted, Ahriman was the only non-Fourth Fellowship member of the Thousand Sons who wasn't a chode, and Bjorn was pretty funny in Emperor's Gift, they should let that old coot out more.

Helsreach is awesome because it's the one book I've read that really makes me feel, "this is ACTUALLY what space marines should be like." They are Gods of War, as alien to humanity of the Imperial Guard as they are to an Ork.
Eisenhorn then Ravenor are great books, amongst my favourites. They're a whole different side to 40k, more Blade Runner than Starship Troopers.
I've sort of mellowed out on Gaunts Ghosts, I used to really like them but now, quite frankly, I've lost an real emotion for them. They did the 24 thing of crossing the border between the tension of 'anyone can die' to the resigned assumption that 'everyone will die' so there's no point caring about the characters.
Night Lords (Soul Hunter, Blood Reaver and Void Stalker) are an awesome epic of awesomeness.

I love Black Library Books, so I can't pick one favorite, but here's some of my favorites:
Legion by Dan Abnett
Nemesis by James Swallow
The Word Bearers Series by Anthony Reynolds
Fear to Tread by James Swallow
The Eisenhorn Series by Dan Abnett
As for characters, I loved the assassins in Nemesis, especially Eristede Kell, and Eisenhorn was just the most badass Inquisitor ever.

It's not that bad, with a good exacto knife and about 3 hours meandering work I was able to remove pretty much all DA symbols/feathers/wings except those on the LE chaplains cloak. Though I didn't try to do anything with the Librarian for obvious reasons. Edit: Here is a couple of pictures that'll give you a rough idea of what they'd be like without the DA Iconography http://imgur.com/a/rVsrv

Omegus praising a member of the Space Wolves.
I must have taken a left turn into Bizarro World from work.
A Thousand Sons is my personal favorite 40k novel, and if you have not done so you should check out the Eisenhorn series (I haven't read Ravenor).
As for characters, Magnus the Red is my favorite 40k character period, with other honorable mentions going to (Counting only book characters) Ahriman, Loken and Torgaddon, Perturabo ("Yo Lion El'Jonson gimme ur siege batteries and I'll support you for Warmaster promise), Zathariel, Luther (Both being basically the only reasons you need to read the two Dark Angels HH novels), Ferrus Manus, Argel Tal, Eisenhorn, Ravenor (A way cooler psychic cripple than the Emperor could ever be) and Fischig (He's a proper man) from Eisenhorn, and... There are probably others, but I can't recall them.

I've read two Black Library books so far and they didn't too bad
Hell Forged - A Soul Drinker's novel that I liked especially with the portrayal of the Necrons and the Ad Mech. Also was surprised at some of the Soul Drinkers seeming to have grown tired of fighting
Hammer of Daemons - This one was okay in my opinion, not amazing, but not bad either. Interesting premise with a Grey Knight taken prisoner as a gladiator upon a daemon world.
Edit: On a side note, is Legion by Dan Abnett good? I'm tempted to buy it as it is about my favorite Legion, but I don't want to waste my money on something that turns out to be a crappy read.
