Well, call it morality or OCD, I'll know under the beautiful paint and careful assembly, it's not real.
That would bug the crap out of me. In 1995, when I really started getting into 40k, I traded my
complete starter box of Space Marine for enough 40k SM squads and dreads to get started. Found
out a couple of weeks later every bit of it was fake. I never used a bit of after. I waited and saved
and started from below zero. At the time my biggest concern was my 2 small children. The guy used
any and everything he could lay his hands on to cast. Turned out it was almost all lead. Nowadays I
have no problem with "White Metal". My youngest is 15, and I used caution when I work. That said,
every bit of it I use is bought from the company that made it, not a recast.

I had hoped this thread would be much more interesting. I was actually hoping to learn of a few Forgeworld retailers, even legitimate, that might accept Paypal or based their prices upon US Dollars so that I wouldn't get gouged on bad exchange rates. That would be awesome, and I wouldn't mind paying a premium above list price for such items, assuming they could get stuff to me faster and transactions did not require a credit card that was set up to allow international purchases.
Too bad it got infested by trolls. Oh well, at least I can update my ignore list.

FWIW daedalus, that was the EXACTLY the point of the thread.

I'm totally certain of that. I don't blame you for what it turned into. Just sad to see it did.

I thought the conclusion to that question came very early in the thread, "Forgeworld retailers don't exist".

That makes the mess that is the second page of this thread okay?

If you don't like it then don't continue to participate. The answer (no, there are no third-party retailers) was given in the first reply, so I really don't see the point in complaining that the discussion moved on to other things.
chromedog wrote:I just fail to see what ethics has to do with it (or morality for that matter).
The point is that "it's just a product, morality is irrelevant" is absurd. Obviously products can be unethical, and stolen property is one that pretty much everyone agrees on.
Bossk_Hogg wrote:Or the relentless extension of copyrights in the US. Or the nature of IP law in itself, which favors the rich as weaker cant afford to fight IP bullying by the larger companies that make blatantly false claims (like owning the term space marines, or mythological beings). Or the NFL's absurd claims that it owns all accounts of a game, meaning that they try and extend the copyright to you TALKING about the events of the game. The laws in the US are a huge mess.
Sigh. Yes, IP law has its issues. However, this is not one of them. Banning counterfeit products is not in any way controversial from an ethical point of view. Nor is it in any way about bullying smaller companies. This is a clear-cut case of unethical behavior by the counterfeiting company, and you should at least be honest enough to admit that you just support it because it means you save money.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

Do you really think that someone like Bob Naismith who developed the concept for the Space Marines has been compensated in an ethical manner regarding how many millions of pounds GW has made off from his idea?
Point of fact he stole quite a bit from a previous TT game called Space Marine that was printed in the 1970's, and NOT by GW or anyone involved with GW. I'm really surprised that a lawsuit has never come of this. Maybe the rights holder is dead?
You want some real irony???
That's Ian Livingstone, co-founder of Games Workshop and current Eidos 'Life President' for Square-Enix, saying that copyright shouldn't be so strictly enforced, particularly in the wargame field.
My, how times have changed.
