I choose to think that it is part of Games Workshop's continuing plan to stamp out everything coming close to optimism or silliness in favor of more GRIMDARK.

Think about Pius for a moment. He is the embodiment of hope in Humanity. The smallest man facing the greatest challenge, in defiance of the inevitable. He rejected fate, and proved that Humanity was worth saving.

Can't have a reassuring story like that in a universe that is trying to convince us how ignorant everybody is to the point where it stops making sense.

40K was never about optimism, even when it was much more overtly humorous it was an extremely cynical, sarcastic sort of humour that doesn't sit right with taking the Pius myth at face value as a tale of optimistic courage. Indeed, the idea that the man's true motives, actions, and identity have been consumed over the millenia by a simplistic piece of propaganda in service of a religion who's object of veneration tried to stamp out such practices and which is used to inspire millions of men and women to lay down their lives to defend the crumbling fascist theocratic bureaucracy their society has become, that sounds like exactly the sort of sentiment that fits 40K like a glove.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.

"Your society's broken, so who should we blame? Should we blame the rich, powerful people who caused it? No, lets blame the people with no power and no money and those immigrants who don't even have the vote. Yea, it must be their fething fault." - Iain M Banks

"The language of modern British politics is meant to sound benign. But words do not mean what they seem to mean. 'Reform' actually means 'cut' or 'end'. 'Flexibility' really means 'exploit'. 'Prudence' really means 'don't invest'. And 'efficient'? That means whatever you want it to mean, usually 'cut'. All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal
