Think about Pius for a moment. He is the embodiment of hope in Humanity. The smallest man facing the greatest challenge, in defiance of the inevitable. He rejected fate, and proved that Humanity was worth saving.
Can't have a reassuring story like that in a universe that is trying to convince us how ignorant everybody is to the point where it stops making sense.
40K was never about optimism, even when it was much more overtly humorous it was an extremely cynical, sarcastic sort of humour that doesn't sit right with taking the Pius myth at face value as a tale of optimistic courage. Indeed, the idea that the man's true motives, actions, and identity have been consumed over the millenia by a simplistic piece of propaganda in service of a religion who's object of veneration tried to stamp out such practices and which is used to inspire millions of men and women to lay down their lives to defend the crumbling fascist theocratic bureaucracy their society has become, that sounds like exactly the sort of sentiment that fits
40K like a glove.
