Facebook has an odd criteria for removing content.

I wouldn't call it "Odd" per se, it's perfectly understandable in our social context. There is a certain portion of the population that sees any display of the female body to be inherently at least somewhat pornographic, regardless of context. There is also a portion of population that is going to see the kind of messages and content at issue here as harmless "Boys will be boys" kind of stuff. On the other hand there are also those who will see such content as harmful and perpetuating a culture that is harmful to women, rather than anything that can be played off as a joke.

Given the first two groups are probably substantially larger than the last group, it makes sense that Facebook tends to target breastfeeding pictures rather than attempts to make jokes about rape and domestic violence. Now I tend to be in the last camp and find it somewhat regrettable that that's the way things play out, despite the fact it "makes sense", on at least on a self-interest level for Facebook. Obviously a campaign like this is an attempt to drum up enough noise to make it in facebook's interest to target those taking about rape and domestic violence, but I'm skeptical of how effective it'll be.

To be fair, though, assuming that the image we got isn't a fake, it really is offensive and need to be removed. I'd contact the higher up person on this matter and complain about customer service. If this fails as well, go what they did and publish it on the media. Media LOVES making bad news about Facebook. Not kidding, they specifically ask for anything fishy they might publish sometimes.

Here's my original post. I might reference it.

Do they want Facebook to hire a huge collection of staff to approve every single picture and post?

Where in my original post did I attack the feminist movement? Where in any of my posts besides this one have I ever mentioned the feminist movement?

 Melissia wrote:
So apparently, it's not okay for people to take offense at someone advocating sexualized violence against them... but it IS okay for you to take offense at someone attempting to say "that's not cool and you should take that down".

You don't understand why I have a problem with stuff like this. If a store that you like doesn't sell something you want or it treats you in a way that you don't like but other customers are fine with, I'm the kind of guy that will just go to another store instead of yelling at the store to change their ways to appeal to my desires. If Facebook acts in a way that you don't like, but a majority of their customers like or don't mind, why do you feel the need to change it?

 Melissia wrote:
Or rather, you're using the term "offense" without really knowing (or just not caring) what it means, so that you can insult the feminist movement and make yourself feel better about your own life. Same goes with so many other people in this thread.

Again, where did I ever say anything about the feminist movement?

Facebook terms of use prohibit the posting of offensive content. I, personally, do not mind, but if they put it in their ToS, they should reinforce it.

You just hit the report button then and have to deal with the results. Then again, as others already pointed out, it fully depends on the context. If someone posted that stuff on his public facebook or if a well-known person posts such stuff, that's sth. completely different than someone posting that image in a group - as in the latter case, you voluntarily joined that group and its theme.

Plus: while we did get the image, neither do we know its content nor do we know if it's real or forged.

Typical feminist movement actions. Need absolutely EVERYTHING to cater to them and if anything else happens that isn't beneficial towards them then they will complain and whine. There's sexism towards men on facebook too. Twitter had a whole "#killallmen" deal. They don't care about equality. They want superiority.

While I agree that offense in itself is not a valid reason for anything, I'm not sure that's what the group in question is really getting at.

Meh, I don't like the over-generalization. First of all, it's a tiny group that can hardly be taken seriously and secondly, there's a lot of good in feminism as well. Just don't mix actual with sexism that's more often displayed on this forum.

A good example for feminism doing really good is feminists fighting women quota. The latter is one of the worst things that could happen to women and it's really sad to see so many women embracing it.

Facebook issues statement on the matter.

I still don't see why this group's complaints have generated so much ire. They were obviously not saying Facebook advocates this stuff. They were clearly just stating that there are some disgusting things on there (and no, I'm not an opponent of free speech, it seems clear to me that the stuff quoted in their complaint was self-evidently horrible) and asking that FB at least try to moderate their content better and take swifter action to come down on the nasty stuff, as it so richly deserves.

Phrases such as that makes it sound like Facebook do in fact approve of the images that were being complained about.

You can at least see what I mean, though. I mean they're not saying Facebook looked at the groups and approved them as in "liked and agreed with their message," they mean FB approved it as in they allowed it to be posted. In other words, the vetting procedure (if any) let them through.

Facebook has a vetting procedure? When was this implemented??

That's why I said "if any," I've never started a group on there so I don't know.

Judging by some of the stuff that I've seen when I log in I would lean towards saying that when a group is set up it doesn't have to get approved.

Anyone can start a group. It's up to other users to report them if they post porn or other offensive material. Part of setting up a group is agreeing NOT to do that.

My point exactly. Facebook does not vet the content posted on their site unless a complaint is made. Taking down objectionable content is reactive rather than pro-active. There is no pre-approval for content, images, groups, etc. The fact that the protest letter said that Facebook's moderators approved these image it patently false and it gave the impression that the images were explicitly approved for publication by Facebook staff (i.e. that the moderators viewed them, and approved them for upload).

We've already been over this. They seem to have meant "approved" as in "your moderators looked at this incredibly sexist content after it was reported and then explicitly said it's okay and declined to take it down."

If I may interject here:

Your argument appears to be on that can ultimately be reduced down to "why bother attempting to change the status quo?". And if might answer that for you, the reason is because currently the status quo does not grant equivalency to women and men; it is dominated by the patriarchy. And if everyone simply turns a blind eye or permits it to continue, then it will never change. While this may be perfectly acceptable to someone who happens to benefit from the status quo, it is unreasonable to expect someone who is disadvantaged by it to merely shrug their shoulders and accept that they are treated worse.

I'd say that it is open to some interpretation, but the common usage of something being approved by a moderator is usually that a moderator must ok an image/post/etc. prior to it's publication.

Maybe you can post on their facebook page to express that you found their verbiage ambiguous and would appreciate it if they would clarify if they were referring to the thing that doesn't happen or the thing that is happening and has been referred to in this thread, with links.
