Also LR lists work well if you can deal with Hammerheads/Riptides/Suits to a lesser degree quickly. They're about the only thing you need to worry about in LR spam.

People have said it before but a good rule of thumb is Get up close and personal. If nothing else, it'll make 'em sweat...

I dunno who you are playing, but I would not have overwatched with anything but the first squad if you tried to feed me bait like that.

I do not have a Tau codex, but does the supporting fire thing allow you to fire overwatch against an enemy that charges a unit already locked in CC?
Because I think he meant to have both his units to charge the same Tau squad. If it works like I think either you fire overwatch with all units at the first charge or you won't fire it at all

Look Out Sir makes me sad though. Vindicare Assassins are cool until that happens.

I tought the assasin ignored the Look out sir rule?

¨Q: Does the Vindicare Assassin’s Deadshot special rule supersede the
Look Out, Sir special rule for the purposes of Wound allocation,
meaning that the player who owns the Vindicare Assassin is still
allowed to allocate the wounds from its shooting even if their opponent
makes and passes a Look Out, Sir roll? (p53)
A: Yes.¨

I don't think a Vindicare ever made its points back against me.

Not quite true: though to be fair you happened to be playing space wolves at the time. Against tau though? I can only recall one game where it did itself justice, but that was when I'd dropped Modrak and his terminator friends into the middle of your deployment zone; essentially giving you more immediate problems than one sniper in the hills. Generally it didn't do that much apart from drawing an unholy amount of aggro for the turn or two it saw effective service, true.

They are much better against enemy vehicles and high point value single wound models/character assassination; neither of which saw any proliferation in 4th edition tau. perhaps 6th will have changed that? I haven't yet seen how the metagame has been re-sculpted by that codex yet.

A unit may fire overwatch provided ITS not already locked. There are no 'non' normal restrictions excepting the ones that says 'all units within 6 may fire overwatch'.... I'd hold back with everything except the unit that was eating that first charge, and then murder the dudes moving in later with the torrent.

When I say weaker unit I mean a 14 man Crusader Squad that's armed to the teeth. The other unit was My Marshal whom at the time was gunning for the Riptide's head. Which he promptly took. Hence he's the stronger of the 2. The tactic only really works when both units are almost the same level of capable destruction so target priority is harder. He probably shot the Crusaders because they were the easiest of the 2 to kill and I was going to break the line either way.

Is my opponent doing it wrong, or do marker lights really only benefit 1 tau unit?
He lights up my Strike Squad, and they get 5 tokens.
Then fire fires with crisis squad A, reducing cover to nil, and upping BS to 5.
Crisis Squad B then fires without mark lights.

Is this correct?

If so, it looks like marker lights are a bad deal. The bonus you get for the lights is worse than just buying more shooters, unless you are plinking away at crazy cover save units with little or no armor.
Against my Grey Knights (all power armor force), 12 more firewarriors (cheaper than 10 pathfinders) do more damage than the boost to BS and Cover negation of the lights.
The lights mathematically weaken the army.

Markerlights cost 44 points for 2 hits, which will make a crisis team, ionhead, or riptide, ect.shoot at at BS5. Goin from hitting 1/2 the time to hitting 5/6 is a 66% increase in firepower. So I ask you, is 44 less than say 66% of the 108 points you will spend on a maxed out fire warrior squad? You just paid 44pts for ~72pts of firepower, and that is the worst use of the markerlights. The deal gets better on stronger units.

You can't say markerlights make you army weaker because they are inefficient. The math just showed they are, just on BS. Negating a 4+ cover save is a 100% increase in firepower if you can beat their armor save. More importantly, markerlights are whatever firepower you need at the time. Need to kill a MC? Try buffing the ion cannon or monsterhunting crisis suit. Want dead infantry? Try buffing your firewarriors.

Yup. Ethereal or Fire Blade. In terms of beating Tau though, maybe the best is to just take Tau allies. Sorry has someone already said this? Anyway, Tau allies and dropping wolves is a tactic i'm using in one of my current lists against Tau. If my opponents continue being light on scoring units it should work just fine
