Don't let your Monstrous Creatures/important characters get charged by Necrons with Mindshackle Scarabs.
Don't be careless with your Troops, they win you games.
Don't build lists without multiple answers to common threats.
Don't build lists without any answers to uncommon threats.
Don't let your opponent use a Forge World unit without being able to provide a datasheet for it.
Don't forget to read things like FW datasheets and Codex entries if you're unfamiliar with an enemy unit.

Don't run assault Guard or assault Tau.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

This is a great phrasing for a concept a lot of people don't seem to understand.

+1 and stolen for later use.

Carry on.

You forgot "don't build lists that can't protect themselves from fliers".

Who said they do that? I certainly don't. Tau aren't just the gunline, shoot at everything that gets close army anymore. Your concept of 6th edition Tau is very different than mine.

Tau in a broad sense mightn't be 'gunline, shoot at everything that gets close', but good Tau are.

I've never gunlined my Tau and I've been playing with them since 4th edition. I've also been playing Farsight lists since 4th edition so I couldn't spam Broadsides. Only lost one game and that was against Wave Serpent Spam Eldar with their new book and 2+ pen to glance save of awesomeness.

Don't blame the army for what the players in your area do. The army is capable of being good without being a gunline, it just takes careful planning every turn for it to achieve its potential.

The Laws of Thermodynamics:
1) You cannot win. 2) You cannot break even. 3) You cannot stop playing the game.

Avoid taking assault units or at least don't take more than a few. 6th edition might as well be called the shooting edition.

Since everyone will be doing this, you'll rarely have to deal with many counter-assault units. So even though you may be taking shooty units, assault may still be a viable tactic if not an overall strategy. (I do quite well with shooty+assault Tyranids)

Avoid taking glass cannon assault units. Tougher assault units are better able to survive their transport being blown up, survive overwatch, survive a round of fire after winning combat, and survive multiple units piling in. Glass cannon assault units have a tendency to die to a stiff breeze.
