The Imperial Fists, I'm a fan of siege warfare. Their discipline and stubbornness are traits I would prefer to have compared to other chapters.

I'm going to come out and be honest on this one and say I do not have what it takes to be a Space Marine or even in the IG. I spent a few months in the army reserves and I spent one cold winter weekend on the parade square doing drill in minus 15 Celsius temperatures without gloves because one person in the platoon forgot their gloves (so no one could wear gloves).

I got a lot of respect for people in the army, because I couldn't even handle a weekend in winter without gloves. I can't imagine what hell it would be like to be in a battle on top of that crap.

I'm out of shape, hate the cold, hate the heat. I would not hack it one bit.

I'm a second degree blackbelt in Tae Kwon Do...I might be good enough shape to be accepted into a trial...granted...the people who actually SURVIVE...well...they are basically olympians....super men by our standards even before they undergo the training to become a marine.

Salamanders. They're the closest you get to reasonable marines, to the point that you can even still interact with normal humans on a civilian level and aren't a mindless zealot preaching dogma. By W40K standards especially, the Salamanders are sane and offer a decent life.

Wasn't there also some fluff bit of the Salamanders even having families? I've seen that stated on other forums but never found the proof. Was it from their novel series?

I thought most initiates were like 13-14 year olds.

Another vote for Mentor Legion. Test pilot squadron of the Imperium. Best Gear, interesting mission. Plus just running around Guard regiments going all god-mode on whoever the regiment is fighting with your forbidden archeotech and neural targetting web and time dilation apparatus seems fun. Being seconded in general is cool too. Any veteran can tell you that whenever you can get away from your command to just hang out with your squad is a good day at work.

Of the listed options-- Blood Angel. Like the Salamanders but with way more style. Italian renaissance vampire artificer schizoids? Sweet. Plus it's the one initiation that seems somewhat doeable. Just chill out in a coffin drinking blood for a year. Better than being prolapsed by a bunch of amorous wolves or whatever the space wolves do.

Ultramarines are by far the best call, with Imperial Fists or Raptors being the next best.

Think about it though, an Ultramarine would have come from Ultramar, which is pretty much the most normal and prosperous region in the Imperium. An Ultramarine would have had a relatively normal family and a good upbringing in a place where the dream of the Imperium was fully realized. Other Marines are largely from depressing, derelict, savage hell holes and are psychologically messed up right down to their cores. Most other Marines aren't really fighting for anything other than a Chapter Ideology or for the love of fighting and killing itself. An Ultramarine will leave Ultramar and fight far and wide and they will be exposed to all the hellish ugliness that exists in the universe and they will always know that out there somewhere is a place worth fighting for, a reality that they can bring to fruition with their own hands and deeds.

Coming from Ultramar, an Ultramarine knows for a fact that they are a literal hard line that stands between all that is good and all that is evil. That's why they are so brutally meticulous. It's cool if other chapters want to play around at being Timmy Tough-asses and seeing who can be a bigger crazier drunken brawler or a more flesh hating hard ass or a better secret keeping-former brother hunting-rock in space living Marine, because these types of Marines are useful to the Imperium in a smaller and more specialized way.

Ultramarines, however, get things done. They know that the only thing standing between light and darkness is they themselves. That is what creates their sense of urgency and why they spend every ounce of their time and energy on absolute perfection in their training and preparation. They do not have time to waste in trying to prove that they are wild tough guys, or to worry about their dead primarch, or seek vengeance for some event in the past. They only have time to prepare for the next challenge, for the next cry for help that rings out in the Astronomican.

Ultramarines leave specialization and being a unique (angry) little butterfly for the children. I'm not denying that other forces and Chapters provide an important service to the Imperium, but if you were to think of the defenders of the Imperium as a human body, the Ultramarines are the brain and backbone upon which everything else is built and based.

Plenty of other Chapters are pretty cool, and would be fun to be a part of, and even the Guard has parts that make it appealing, but the Ultramarines and its close successors are a different breed. Even amongst Astartes.

This. Also, great fluff, one of the oldest of the original chapters (both in fluff and as RT poster boys)

Also, whou wouldn't want to be part of their rebuilding, skys the limit when your short on manpower, and you could help mold the chapter into its best version of itself as you go
